In this episode, I share the care and propagation of the infamous goeppertia (formally calathea) orbifolia. Many, including myself, have killed this plant as the care can be confusing for newbies. Watch how I make them thrive and share tips on how to achieve a full pot of foliage. I also propagate, showing you 3 months update at the end!

Sean, I got my first calathea (a Dottie/black lipstick) a month and a half ago, and she's died back significantly and lost most of her leaves bc I didn't know how to take care of her at first! But after watching your videos, I think I finally got it down! I stuck her outside in the shade where it's more humid, gave her a mixture of cactus/succulent mix, perlite, and orchid bark in a clear plastic orchid pot (to check water/roots), and rainwater from the first time it rained this summer. And to my surprise, today I found that she's pushing out two new shoots! Thank you for making calathea care so simple and less frightening! They truly are resilient plants!

When the rhizome develops in width enough you can cut it and separate the little shoots, but those underground things are tubers and merely water and nutrient storage systems, not babies capable of reproducing. The more you have the better. They give energy to the plant, they don't take it away. They're not like corms on alocasias. I've had asparagus plants grow back from only roots and tubers after being cut down but they're invasive and far less sensitive than calatheas/goeppertias and it's the only case I've heard of that happening.

You are, by far, my favorite plant-tuber. You are so genuine and honest. Thank you for your videos and your experiments and your successes, your updates, and also your, sometimes, brutally honest failures 🙂❤

Calathea is my bias. I am guilty of losing my first orbifolia but I’m sure I’ll try again. They are just too pretty 😍

My favorite calathea! Never had pest issues or any drama with them. I agree, they thrived when i used lighter more airy medium

Thank you so much! I kept researching “pods” or “bulbs” on the roots of my goeppertia orbifolia with zero results. Google said to keep them; you’ve shown us all that they are babies 👶🏽🤗 Going to repot my babies and see how it goes. Thank you, again! 🙏🏾

This was fascinating! One of my favorite calatheas, which I also just killed recently. But, i love the time lapse and that you are so willing to take apart and propagate your plants with reckless abandon in the name of research! It is very helpful!

I just repot my calathea. The roots are all tied up so tightly. I didn't know I can just tear it apart like what you did at
