Calcium channel blockers are medications used to treat high blood pressure aka hypertension. Nurses, nursing students, and healthcare providers need to understand how these medications work in order to monitor and teach patients about their impact and side effects.
There are some important questions our patients will ask us and we need to know where to find the right information.
Can I take my CCB with grapefruit juice?
Is it okay if I take it and then measure my blood pressure?
What about other medications, is it safe to use?

Thank you for this video! I was just put on amlodipine for hypertension when lisinopril 20 mg wasnt taking care of it. Amlodipine was added but without any teaching! My 4th day out and I have been short of breath, extremely fatigued and tachycardic. Your explanation has REALLY helped me understand what is “going on”. TY. Quit the ramipril , quit the diltiazem, quit the apaxiban . Quit the Atorvastatin .Blood sugar normal,BP is averaging 135/75 but she is 82. I will try to find the K2-7 study and reply with the link. I really can't verify the atrial fibrillation but we quit coffee , no episodes yet for my mother. I have seen a study that did implicate coffee in atrial fibrillation if i find it and it seems scientific I will post it.

Oh my God! I was just prescribed HBP medication (Amlodipine) and was told by a doctor to cut it in half the first week!!! I was feeling bad like the pill was not right for me so I went back showed that by using half and making big life style changes my blood pressure numbers have dropped drastically, but I was feeling dizzy and just bad. I took my blood pressure everyday and took my notes to the doc as they had suggested. She got very upset telling me my blood pressure still out of control because I had a reading of 123/82 and that she might add a second medication. I lost faith in doctors, and now hearing you don't cut calcium channel blocker pills in half oh no,,,how can I go back to that doctor and believe she's doing the right thing?
@NurseMinder

Is it a sustained release tab? I don’t imagine it is a capsule. Sustained release, once cut, is absorbed more rapidly. If it is not a sustained release tab, you will be ok

Hi Robyn. It’s normal to feel worried when there are many known side effects. What I will offer to you is that the list of effects is for awareness. Many people have no to minor symptoms and enjoy the benefits of treatment without issue. Stay connected with your healthcare team if issues come up. It will be the best way they can ensure you have the right dose and drug :)

Hello, today I learned that calcium channel blockers are formulated to increase heart rate and blood pressure. Also that beta blockers have the opposite effects decreasing hr and blood pressure. I have been prescribed both for HBP. Are they working against each other? I am taking metoprolol succinate ER 25 mg and Amlodipine besylate 10 mg. Thank you for clarifying this for me!
@NurseMinder

Calcium is needed for contraction of the heart muscle. By using a CCB, you are slowing the movement of calcium into the cell, increasing the length of time between contractions = decreasing heart rate

Check out this article, it is an interesting read and it seems this has been a topic of debate for a while www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fcvm.2021.719165/full Typically high calcium is associated with hypertension which is why we are treating it with a Calcium Channel blocker and what I see in this article is low calcium sets of a chain reaction and leads to other pathways which may cause high blood pressure. At it's root high blood pressure is serious and needs to be treated and knowing the cause is the critical first step to designing a treatment plan
