MR Lee your video was very well presented, very informative, I am 75 yrs old been a amateur machine operator and thought I was fair at math a long time. You sir, are a great instructor/teacher thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. You mentioned, at the last of your video, about making a bolt hole pattern identification video, please do so. We are in bad need of your knowledge and teaching expertise in our public schools. Thanks for making a great video.

Thanks Lee, I enjoyed it very much. In fact I shall go to that taper page and calculate for some angle gauges for my mill. Cheers!

Thank you for jogging my memory with this little lesson, I used MS Visual Basic 25 yrs ago to create multiple stand alone Calculator’s to compute a specific set of numeric values for a given job. Basically a short cut for those who didn’t want to do the math! Have a great day!

Your explanation less the programming was great. My pea brain won’t figure out why you use the whole length (5.5) and not what appears to be about 3/4 inches. Thanks Lee.

Thanks, that was wonderfully done, I would appreciate more of this kind of content. I really enjoyed the glimpse into simple programing.

One really good thing I learned was the iphone on its side thing. I did not know about that. I expect most people will use the online calculator. Thanks for the video.

Thanks well done. I too should have pursued trig and Algebra when in school. I would dearly like to be able to convert trig values to both radians and degrees without the use of a calculator. that is a project for another time. I found you presentation stimulating and most helpful. have a great and safe day.

You're right I'll never use it but I hated math in school because my teachers weren't, since I started watching machining ytubes I've become more interested be nice to find a Chanel that teaches practical math for fun

Hi Lee, That was cool. It is always good to see a practical application of mathmatics we never thought we would use in the real world. I would like to see the bolt hole pattern video as well. I have used similar geometry to draw a 5 point star so I have somewhat of an idea for how it is done, but it would be good to see. Thanks for the video! -mike

This is good to know the angle you are needing and the explanation was very well done. But, given now that we know the angle how do you go about setting the compound accurately. The angles on my compound are not really fine enough to get any sort of an accurate angle. This would be something very interesting, to me at least, to know how to set fairly accurate angles on the compound slide. Thank you for the interesting video.

In thinking about how I would have solved, I would have subtracted the 1.5 from the 4, result divided by 2 which gave me a base for the right triangle and the 5.5 is the rise….since I don’t know arctan…lol

Hi Lee, If you do what @outsidescrewball said below, you get a triangle where you know 2 sides and an angle between them. Specifically you get a right triangle, so you can use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the length of the hypotenuse. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_theorem Once you know the length of the hypotenuse, you can use the Law of Cosines to solve for the half angle of the taper. mathworld.wolfram.com/LawofCosines.html Imo, the benefit of doing it using the above method is that once you know the length of the hypotenuse you have all the data needed to set or validate your compound angle very accurately with a dial indicator.

Remember, the purpose of this video was to show the math used in various online calculators to compute the angle. It was never meant to be a practical approach. Thanks for stopping by.
