I don't quite understand expected value. Wouldn't it simply be an average? In a random example, if 5 men are republicans, 6 are democrats, and 4 are independents, why wouldn't the expected value be 5 for all three? In the video's example (at the 7:00 mark), what is the basis for expecting 32 out of 40 people over 21 to pass their driver's test?
@brianxyz7 жыл бұрын
Your null hypothesis is always that there are no differences between the groups. In this example you'd expect the same percentage of those 21 and older to pass as you would those under 21. Since the sample contained twice as many people >=21 than it did

Hi, good night Ms. Pederson. Your explanation was very clear. However, based on some other video that i have watched when calculating the chi-squared value, the individual explaining used the same denominator as opposed to using each of the expected values as a denominator. Now I am confused as to whether or not your method is correct and not the one from the instructor that I watched previously. Could you please clarify?
@jacquelineoverton82238 жыл бұрын
She is correct in this video. You must use each expected value, that's the whole point, that you're comparing the value you measured for each category to the value that would be expected for that category if they were drawn from the same distribution. (If you look at Wikipedia's page the summation notation for the Chi-square equation: note the "sub-i's" on the E in the denominator! That's the key!) It is possible that the denominator in the other video happened to be the same value for all cases and that created confusion. Hope that helps!
