Dear Mr. O'Loughlin, I have tried to use chi-square in my forensics class. It has been used, by me, to see if there is a correlation between the medullary structure of animal hairs and nocturnality; which came up as a possible explanation for the differences in medullary structure, by chance, during a lesson. Your explanation is clear and accessible for high school students. Thank you. And, oh yes, the probability for animals that share the characteristic of cell-like structures, walking and running locomotor patterns and nocturnal activity patterns is 10.48. This is well beyond the 7.81 critical value...so further investigation is warranted. Best regards, Linda Brown Bronx, NY

@EugeneOLoughlin
@EugeneOLoughlin 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Keiron, Many thanks for your kind comments - I'm glad that your students find my videos useful. BTW - I find with my own students that the Chi-square test is one of the most error prone tests that they do - many forget to do the last line (O-E)2/E, and end up summing the wrong data. Warn your students of this! Dr E.

@@EugeneOLoughlin Hi Eugene, Yes, I have also noticed one or two making this error. Thankfully most seem to know what they're doing. As both the psychology & biology A-levels have a 10% maths content, your videos have proven invaluable to these students. Thanks again, Keiron

Thanks Dr. E. for this lecture. By the way in the Philippines, it has been suggested by the academe that Chi-square (Test for Independence) must be also utilized to determine whether two classification criteria are independent of each other such that we intend to use contingency tables or in market research studies (referred to as the cross-tabs).. :)

Thank you for the thorough explanation.It was very helpful. However, at the very beginning , how did you come up with the alpha value =0.05 ? was it given ? or will it be given ? Also, if the X squared value is greater than the critical, will it always reject they hypothesis > Thank you.
@onmarti
@onmarti 5 жыл бұрын
The alpha value of 0.05 is the standard value of the significance level. When the significance value is not stated, it is usually assumed that 0.05 will be used. The x^2 value is the statistical value of this test, and therefore, when a statistical value is higher than the critical value, the null hypothesis should always be rejected.
