Isnt this the question they tend to ask it as (Determine the equation of the normal of the tangent?) I find this extremely pleasant because it reminds me of the Normal force in Physical Sciences Netwons Laws... The normal force Perpendicular to the surface... Yes you can only use f'(x) when they say f(x) instead of y, which would then always be dy/dx
