Great stuff Lee & Mandy , maybe a tip when using certain sites for accommodation , to stop price and availability changing every time you use site is to clear history cashe and cookies and use a VPN to help get a better deal in price and room , worked for me not saying works for everybody depends on site etc
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
I like the idea. Just like when searching for flights. I'm sure the cookies track your search history and adjust the price accordingly. Not sure if incognito search works or not but definitely worth clearing the cache and using a VPN. Cheers for the heads up! 👍

I like that you have emphasized the value of picking up something to eat from a local supermarket. The value is typically off the charts. I was in Aveiro once and we were in the mood for an ice cream and ended up getting a four pack of Magnum bars at a Pingo Doce for less than half of what a couple soft serves would be from a stand. On the topic of toilets on buses, I believe they are free on the FlixBus line and I think I also read a toilet exists on each Flixbus bus.
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
You got a great deal there from Pingo. The cost of things like that is always exceptionally lower from the supermarkets. I find it always seems to taste better when you know you've got a good deal. 🤣 Yes, the Flixbus toilets are always free onboard. They were locked mostly during the Covid outbreak but have started to become available again now. 👍

Thanks. We love how all the bus and train stations are beautifully decorated with tiles here! 😍. We really loved Tomar and are so glad we stayed a week. We saw the aquaduct from the castle but didn't go out to the more remote part. We had great intentions to but both got really sick and couldn't do much for a while. 😔. Glad to see you have arrived in fabled Tomar . You have certainly found a great place to stay .We enjoyed every minute of our time in Tomar and I am sure you will too. Just opposite the Residencial Luz ( our room ) there is a very nice restaurant/ cafe . Fernando's also comes to mind . Reasonably priced rather than cheap -- but in all honesty , I don't think you can go wrong .

The bus terminal in Caldas da Rainha is one of my favorites with the only exception of paid toilet use. It's clean, modern, maintained, and has a nice arrival and departure screen. There should be a word for when a person traveling is sort of caught in a mental limbo of not knowing what's going on with transport, and it happens to me almost every time I'm at a bus terminal with nothing telling me the schedule or lines. The terminal in Alcobaça is almost identical and probably run by the same company, but it also has a fifty cent fee for toilet use. A big thumbs up and confirmation from me on your tip to check out Rodoviário do Oeste as they provide great local routes and better value against the bigger brands where routes are shared.
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Yes we really like the terminal in Caldas too. It feels like it's had a recent makeover with everything new and modern. Last time we were in Alcobaça the buses were all stopping outdoors. I think the terminal was under renovation. We'll have to pay it a visit. I had noticed most of the bus stations we've used in Portugal haven't had notice screens that worked and it is concerning when you don't know the departure bay. My Portuguese often struggles with the distorted announcements so I end up asking at information or everyone around me. People tend to be very friendly and helpful here. 👍

I just love the deal that you got for your accommodation! Such good value. You took a chance and really 'lucked' out. Fantastic. It's about expecting the minimum and seeing everything above that as a wonderful bonus. Which you both do. So positive. Interesting that the price has risen since! Speaking of breakfast. Did you take the option...2 Euros is good value... Italy worked out well as we had a guest house with the most delicious and plentiful breakfast ever! We ate a lot and that kept us going until we could have a cheap plate of pasta in the evening or a snack. We made it to San Marino... country 96. I was really impressed with the views...I just couldn't stop looking and views are free. Across to Rimini and the Adriatic one way. Into the rich, golden countryside the other way. Breathtaking indeed. On Tuesday I am off to Georgia. It's been raining for two weeks. I hope it stops 😂

Hi Julie. It was a really good price and good value for money. The prices tend to rise and fall depending on availability. We booked about 3 weeks in advance and got a great deal. We did take the breakfast option which we'll show in another video and it was really extensive. We didn't go hungry there. A bargain at €2 each. Enjoy San Marino. It's on our list to visit. We'd planned a tour of the micro states of Europe before Covid and it didn't eventuate. Did you stay overnight there? I can imagine budget accommodation would be hard to find. Hope you like Georgia. We have a friend trekking there at the moment. If you bump into a French man called François say hello from us. 😁 ~ Lee

Terrific video Mandy & Lee. You did well with that hostel Lee. On a non-planned trip to the Algarve I stopped in Sagres and asked at the Sagres coffee shop if there were any hotels. They suggested the Navigator and they only charged me 20 Euros. What bargain. I had tv/wifi, 2 beds, a kitchen... It was tired looking but I needed a clean place to sleep, and it had what I needed. I wonder what the price would be now.
@FrugalTravellers2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jen. That sounds like a great find down in Sagres. It's well worth asking around for some local bargains. Sometimes if we plan to stay somewhere long term we'll book a few nights in a cheap place, see what it's like, then scout around local places to see if we can find a better deal. It's amazing what you can find if you cast the net far. 👍

I was just on Obidos and Caldas a few weeks ago and was planning on going to Tomar after, but there were no busses for some reason at the time. Maybe it was because of the workers strike. Who knows, but I was so disappointed. Glad to see you guys made it out there though.

It was a really nice hostel, felt more like a cosy, homely guesthouse. It was about half a mile out up a very steep hill so took about 15 minutes to walk from town. A lot of walkers from the camino stayed there. He doesn't have a dog so may accept cats. Could be worth asking. The owner was very friendly and amenable. 👍
