Only two of them were members of the Velvet Underground, and one of those two barely was. John Cale definitely was in the VU. Maclise was a founding member but dropped out before they recorded anything. He thought they were sullying the art by making some money from a gig. He ended up filling in on a few live dates later on, but wasn't a regular contributor. Also, Lou was pretty experimental in his own right. He did those crazy guitar feedback drones on live performances of Sister Ray that no one else was really achieving at the time, and also made the very experimental Metal Machine Music. But I'm pretty sure this predates The Velvet Underground. Tony Conrad and Lamont Young were from a more avant garde art scene and weren't interested in doing rock or pop music.

@@m.scottmcgahan9900Besides being in the VU, Cale recorded several tracks where he experimented with numerous Avantgarde techniques and elements he developed under Avantgarde luminaries Iannis Xenakis, John Cage and LaMonte Young. These different elements he would bring into the Velvets sound, which he then taught Lou Reed, who would use them a decade later on MMM: kzbin.info/aero/PLNINWcxxj9hHMJx4_oFVWNLznPeMWKRVW&si=L2YGHJgpYVGpGRE-

Who’s playing sax?
@scioarete79877 ай бұрын
It could be Young; he would play soprano in this group
@sooperheep7 ай бұрын
@@scioarete7987 ah thank you, something about it was familiar and I think it reminded me of the viola on the black angels death song by the velvets
@scioarete79877 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure this is The Fire Is a Mirror, which the VU Movie has Young saying he would play an oscillating soprano sax on. Black Angel is a great tune
@sooperheep7 ай бұрын
@@scioarete7987 thank you, I had that song open in another tab and listening to it I agree that this is the same song though this version is in better quality. Do you mean the VU doc by Todd Haynes? I didn’t catch that, I loved the section about the Dream Syndicate and drones.
@scioarete79877 ай бұрын
@@sooperheep correct. There should be a portion of the interview where he talks about oscilating soprano sax in these recordings.
