Caleb Williams texted fellow rookie punter Tory Taylor that the Bears “aren’t going to punt much”. Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, and Kevin Wildes discuss the expectations on the Bears this season, and how Bo Nix’s age makes him more “game-ready” for the Denver Broncos.

A couple thoughts in general from this segment: 1. Boy has this become one of my favorite NFL general talk shows in general, especially with your great on-set chemistry. I hope you get to supplant other below-average talk shows in the NFL/ESPN :) 2. Considering how the Bears have been pretty unsuccessful at developing QBs in the past decade, I'm definitely in the "wait and see" mode to see how Caleb ends up being in the NFL. At the moment, I think Nick is a bit too much on the hype train with Caleb Williams...

True. Imagine what Justin Fields could have done with those receivers. D.J. Moore had a career season with Fields as his QB. Caleb Williams has never played in the NFL and is suggesting, expecting and promising too much. I wish he would verbalize his desire to be a playoff team instead of guaranteeing it.

Cole Kmet was also an underrated security blanket for Fields, and they've got a decent running back room to take some heat off the passing game. I just don't know that the offensive line-which for years was the biggest detriment to Fields' development-has improved that much. Caleb might be running for his life a little bit.

@@johnbox271 that is completely untrue. He comes to a team with weapons in place, something that JF NEVER had. JF had Kmet and DJ added to the mix for 1 year. A decent ground game. So yeah we can say that for JF, but not for CW. Ground game is improved with the addition of Swift, then added ANOTHER future HOF WR in Allen to DJ already in place, then give him a rookie WR in Odunze. CW has the weapons in place, so that is not even going to be a spark to a debate if the floor comes out from under them.

Nick is 100% correct Here’s Caleb Williams’s defensive rankings when he started games: 2021: 60th 2022: 94th 2023: 116th it progressively got worse under Lincoln Riley. Caleb ran for his life on 80% of the offense snaps, with the mindset of “I gotta score on every possession or else we’re losing the game” so he goes for near hail marys every possession. Here’s Patrick Mahomes’s defensive rankings when he started (college) 2014: 84th 2015: 122nd 2016: 126th this is all while maintaining high yard and TD average in the (back then weak) Big-12. he lost his OL the last year I believe just like Caleb Williams did.

Especially when you start to compare him to someone like Stroud. People like to highlight how good CJ's base mechanics are with his footwork and how great his arm proved to be in terms of both power and accuracy, but the thing that REALLY separated CJ as a rookie was how well he reads defenses. The guy was picking up the habits of veteran defensive players and using that to sniff out coverages which is bananas for a rookie QB. I also think Caleb could wind up being a good or even great QB, but we really need to see him against NFL defenses. USC didn't play that many great defensive teams in the Pac-12 and I don't think he ever confronted one of the vaunted SEC defenses that are about as close to NFL caliber as college defenses can get. He absolutely has the physical toolset to be great, but you can't judge him properly until he's playing against NFL defenses. He could flourish, but he could also really struggle against some solid defenses up and down that schedule.
@cobbler88
@cobbler88 17 күн бұрын
Windows are tighter? Anyone else think that the last couple of decades of rules changes, making it an affront to God to tough receivers and QBs, has led to TIGHTER throwing windows? 🤣 You can drive a truck through those windows now. And let's not pretend that these coaches know so much more than previous generations. They were simply brought up within a different set of parameters. Tom Landry could have run the offenses they do now. It just would have gotten his QBs and receivers killed back then. Coaching changes to reflect the current realities of the game. And those realities are why certain schemes can no longer be run.

Late to the party here, but Sean Payton was high on Mahomes coming out in 2017. As far as the argument of his evaluation of QBs goes. He talked a little bit about it on The Herd, where he was going to take Mahomes at 11 before KC jumped ahead of them. Mahomes actually referenced this on The New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce. Saying he essentially tipped off KC to New Orleans' interest. So, KC knew where to trade up to get him.

The cornerback and safety play between college and NFL is the largest jump imo. I don’t wish failure on anyone but I think he’ll be surprised the the tighter windows and better coverage his receivers will face vs. college

Did teams in the PAC 12 put 11 men on the field for defense? Were they even aware that when on defense the goal is to stop the other team from scoring? I think the NFL is going to be a bit tougher.

I swear you’d think that someone who gets paid to do this would come up with something better than something as dumb as who was the last great QB nonsense. Before Manning who was the last great QB to come out of Tennessee. Before Rogers who was the last great QB to come out of Cal. Before Mahomes who was the last great QB to come out of Texas Tech. Conversely by that logic then every Stanford or Perdue QB should go #1 because of Plunkett, Elway, Luck, Grese, Dawson & Drew Bresee. Anytime I hear someone say something so ignorant as that I just stop listening because everything after had ZERO credibility.

Not sure why the Talking Heads hate Nix. Watch the tape. He was really good last year. He was better than Williams. I think he'll run the offense well in Denver. He gets the ball out of his hand. Something Williams only does when he fumbles it. He's like JJ. A higher floor but a lower ceiling. They both play 15 years. Williams might not. His floor is a bust. Nix and JJ's floor is not bust. I willing to bet both have long careers. Maybe no better but longer.
