I have a cash pile too 😂 I put 25% into retirement and on the side I do the 100 envelope challenge to save just over $5000 every couple months cash. I spend less with cash too. I plan on dumping it into an investment account when I see the market come down some more. But it’s in a fire proof safe that won’t be found.

It’s so interesting watching people work through the logic of their financial decisions in these vids. I’ve had so many moments where my husband will ask “wait… why did you spend that?” And I swear when I was doing the spending, it made total sense in my head. But when I have to articulate it, I realize how weird my thinking was. Hope he puts that mattress money to good use! 😂

This channel is so great because it speaks to the real person with a real salary. I've followed many personal finance channels of folks who usually have high or exponential incomes to cancel their budget that just leave me feeling terrible. These videos encourage me as a low-income earner to be intentional. Honestly, I've reduced my spending on bs because I see the light at the end of the tunnel when I watch these videos.

I realized that one semester of mandatory auto shop in high school would save people tens of thousands of dollars over peoples lives. Avoiding scams. Doing small repairs themselves (filter and light and wiper exchanges) , feeling confident in buying used rather than new. Changing their own flat tires. I guess it would be more of an “intro to car ownership and maintenance” class .

But if they did scenarios of going to an auto shop and interacting there as well as a showing the cost of financing a car for 40 years vs paying cash. I really think dumb car purchases and repairs are the biggest source of money trouble for young people especially.

I know you hate car debt but When someone doesn’t know anything about cars, finding a cheap beater that can actually run reliably really seems impossible. He also seems to be a hard worker, his eyes lit when talking overtime. Unloading shingles from a conveyor belt is hard work. Benefit. Don’t need a gym membership or free weights in your basement to be fit!

As an immigrant who came to US for grad school on my own, and was paid humbly during grad school, I could totally understand why he didn’t want to put his hard-earned money in the bank. After I graduated and found an industry job, I once worried about extremely unlikely things such as the bank went bankruptcy (even though I know about FDIC) or technical glitches from the bank. It’s just a sense of insecurity after long periods of stress. I think, to ease his anxiety, instead of asking him to put all the savings into one* bank, ask him to spread his money into several* different high-yield savings accounts. It would add an extra sense of security that he didn’t put all his eggs in one basket.

That 10k needs to be working for him not sitting in a pile under his bed or wherever. Marcus right now is 4.15%. That will at least keep you somewhat in pace with the current inflation. I have a few of the online high yield savings accounts and they are great at this time. I suggest more park some money there if they don't have any other better investments. These are good as defensive investments during bad times if one is not familiar with the stock market.

Really proud of anyone that is fighting addiction. I'm not thrilled with the 200 on going to a smoke shop almost every other day for beverages honestly. If the Zima plan is helping I'd want him to get a week or two's worth at a time. Cause if its helping and he shows up and they are out its a problem, and if just going to the place is more of what is making you feel better than you need to explore that. I do think he's on a great path, get that emergency fund knocked out and he's golden. The amount of stress you lose knowing that you are covered for 6 months is very hard to express.

I too am in Boise, I like his ideas, and he is on the right track, don't see many or any negative financial mistakes. We all want to buy a house in Boise, but the real estate suddenly skyrocketed up 3x in value in just like 3-4 years literally.

I can definitely relate to this guy in so many ways with both the financial part, and the car situation. I find myself also doing similar things with cars because I’m a car guy. And as much as i love cars, I try not to think emotionally when i purchase them. I only purchase a car when i can get it significantly cheaper and i know i will profit off of it when i sell. I purchase the car and enjoy it for a little while, fix it up a little if needed, then sell it for a profit. Most recently i was able to purchase a car worth $6,500 for only $2,600 that i am daily driving. All it needed was rear brake pads. In the last 3 years i have gotten extremely good with finding cars for way cheaper than average. Now for the final way i can relate…. I also need to learn how to use my money to make money in a high yield savings account.

Car insurance for younger people can be rough, but the US insurance costs are very high. I have 15 years of accident free driving and pay 200€ a year for fully comprehensive insurance in Germany. With the old cars he probably only pays for liability insurance.

Hearing about the cash pile devastated caleb..lol I keep cash reserves also, and i give myself 100/wk petty cash allowance.. sometimes its nice to have cash and not have to run my card for small things like a bag of chips or fountain drink, anything under say 20bucks.. i pay cash
