After providing you with ALL of my financials, and waiting for nearly 90 minutes past our scheduled meet time, 3 emails with no response, you never showed. I financed a computer cpu and a couch, I was not this crazy to finance a $4k camera. But if he want to be happy and free he needs to Self-reflect before anything and control his spending. I really dislike the misinformation that almost everyone talks about when speaking about student loans. That is the government / or private loans for that matter, is a trap and that you "didn't know better" or that "schools need to teach financial literacy" because they fooled you into taking out a loan and you didn't know you had to pay it back, etc, etc. I don't know how it is today to get a federal loan, but when I got mine (same age as the guest), there was a mini exam that you had to pass to get your loan. They tested you on interest rate, principles, subsidized vs non-subsidized, and even private loan. There was even a personal tailored breakdown of your loan amount over time. There's zero excuse for anyone to "didn't know better". This is simply misinformation. It's like getting a driver's license, crashing because you didn't stop at a stop sign, and complaining that "you didn't know better". You took the exam to get your loan. You knew. Almost every one of these guests, and posters on Reddit that talks about this debt trap, spend on luxury. Your 4000 camera is a luxury. How can you justify that purchase, along with all of those expenditures on your credit cards, when you have a massive debt accruing at insane interest rate?
@allyleah2
@allyleah2 Жыл бұрын
Even though I’m very understanding with people who have student loan debt I do kind of agree. I remember the first year I took out loans I also had to do the mini loan course/exam on the financial aid site, I assume everyone has to do it. So I do get confused when people say they don’t know how their loans got out of control or whatever. They explain it right there. But financial literacy still needs to be taught better in general.
@centrist3684
@centrist3684 Жыл бұрын
@@allyleah2 My mother and father, who didn't even graduate high school and middle school respectively, knows better to "spend money you don't have". Do schools also need to teach students they shouldn't jump off a building? What about "don't punch a 6 foot tall body builder"? When we say things like "this needs to be taught", it is shying away personal responsibility. These people know they shouldn't be buying luxury when they have debt. They don't care. It feels good to buy nice things and eat good food. But it's not an excuse when they do it and claim ignorance.
@allyleah2
@allyleah2 Жыл бұрын
@@centrist3684 Dude some people were raised differently, believe it or not. I was taught that debt was just another normal part of life, because thats what my parents parents taught them, and so forth. Financial literacy is not as easy as you make it seem. Things like credit, investments, interest rates, etc. were not taught well in a lot of families (especially in different minority/low income families). Schools don’t need to teach us EVERYTHING but I know personally financial literacy wasn’t even pushed in my school. They offered one class that very few people even knew about. This is a large, very well funded public school in a good area too. APs and extra curriculars were seen as much more important. I’m glad your family knew better, but please don’t act like all people in financial messes are just dumb and irresponsible. People simply don’t have the same knowledge and resources.

Excellently put, I couldn't agree more with this sentiment.
@centrist3684
@centrist3684 Жыл бұрын
@@allyleah2 I can align on your sentiment that I sound harsh. Yet I don't believe people need an education by Uncle Sam to know what credit cards are, what interest rates, and what the word debt means. Folks around the world with no education, no opportunities to go to school, knows what debt means. Just because your parents tell you one thing, it doesn't strip away common sense. As you remember, a thorough explanation of your expected monthly payment was educates to you when you take out money from the Federal government. You cannot claim something else blind sides you. The risks are laid out. You took them. I took them. In fact most people who get students loans do not end up in a bad way. It's the loud minorities who fail to establish financial stability, and I'm saying willingly so, that gets echoed.

This is correct, and also extends to many non-stem fields. It's a pretty well-kept secret, but if you qualify for a MD-PhD program then you can get the tuition waived on your MD degree as well. At least, that is how it was in my graduate program. The trade-off is you have to spend another couple years typically as a graduate student. Since medical school often requires a higher bar than a STEM PhD program, I think a lot more MD students should keep this in mind when doing their school search. It could save them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

After a decade, assuming a 6% return, you will have roughly 110K. 500K homes are do-able, even in the more expensive areas, so you will have a 20% downpayment for one of those, or a 10% downpayment for a 1M home. They don’t want to give up their lifestyles even though they’re in ten’s of thousands drowning in debt. I guess ppl just try to forget about it like it doesn’t exist when in reality it’ll never go away and it hurts your ability to have a stable non stressful life because every dollar you make technically isn’t yours, it belongs to other ppl because you owe. Crazy. They’d rather give it to Jeff Bezos and the CEO of Chic Fil A and then justify why they did it. No, you just wanna live a life of luxury when you yourself never came from that. It’s a privilege to buy fast food and ppl forget how hard most ppl actually have it. Take it for granted while living with debt. That’s insanity

I don't understand why people buy 2500+ USD cameras for travel... when a lot of stolen objects (especially cameras) are stolen on vacations. If you NEED a camera for travel if you are not making money from it why not just rent one until you get the debt cleared up at least.

So many people think buying a nice expensive house means success, but to me these people are totally ignorant to what a liability and an asset is. A whole life insurance plan is a good way to store some money that you can borrow against.

First :) will be back to comment after watching the full video. Edit after watching 😁: I don't think people understand that having the money to pay one debt off asap will relieve so much stress much quicker. Like the car is soooo small compared to his other debt. I really hope he pays it off sooner than later! I go out twice a month (two weekends a month since i get paid bi-monthly) and allot myself $20-30 each outing. It's hard but I don't want to be in debt. 😭😭😭😭😭

Thank you for calling out taxes right at the start. You really should look into doing a video around how different states collect taxes differently. People really don't seem to understand that everyone pays more in taxes than they think. Doesn't matter the color of the state you live in. The government is always going to collect whatever it can out of people. Would love to see a simple way to estimate your tax burden under different locations. Help people understand better how things might affect them. We as a country need far more education on taxes. Far too many people are willing to lie to get people to support policies that negatively impact them.

Technically it makes sense to finance at 0 percent only as you can leverage the money and gain interest in savings. However you can sometimes get a 10% discount if you pay all upfront. Then it makes sense.

He should only use the credit cards for needed expenses like bills so he doesn't go over budget and set up automatic payments. It should stay relatively the same month to month so he can keep a baseline amount in his checking and he'll know he can't go under that. Watching your actual money leave your bank account makes it easier to understand. The $20-60 you might get from cash back means nothing if you're spending $2000 you didn't need to.
