Caleb thank you for having me on the show. This really was my wake up call. It was hard to come on this show its fairly embarrassing having my finances ripped apart like that on the internet. I was very irresponsible with my money before I discovered your channel. I have an update on the mobile house, and all those google play transactions I'll be emailing you with the update in just a few days once everything is finalized. That’s the exact question I had in university but was too shy to ask. My friends were constantly going out to eat, had decent cars, MacBook Pro, iPhones, watches, you name it. I came from a middle class family and could barely afford the tuition + textbooks. After talking to a few of the people after we graduated I learned that they maxed out student loans to live that lifestyle. By the time I paid back my student loans, they still had ~ 40k in debt. Some were fairly open about that and clearly regretted the decision. I like to go through life thinking that everyone is in debt, because most people are. Whether that’s as simple as a car payment or like the case with the gentleman in the video.

My husband and I have a combined income of $70,000 but we are frugal and have a very comfortable life, even with the inflation. We both want comfort in life, not luxury. We don't compare ourselves to others because that just makes you think of all the things you don't have instead of what you are blessed with. I always bought everything used, especially clothes when my kids were little. We never eat out because I don't trust people to be clean and we rarely travelled because it's just too exhausting with kids and it's a waste of vacation time. Social media has given people a distorted idea of what a good life looks like. I think having meaningful relationships and experiences with people is more important than travelling the world sightseeing.

I would ask way more questions about the financial arrangements with his mom. They bought a mobile home together, which he was contributing $1200 a month for, but now it’s being foreclosed on, and he doesn’t know what the arrangements are? I wanted to elaborate on the pay structure for mechanics… My husband has been a professional diesel mechanic for about 12 years. Some places do the general pay by the hour … But a lot of these companies have gone to “book time.” Meaning, a job at work is listed in the books to take 2 hours. You get paid $25 hourly, so you made $50 for that job even if you finished it in 1 hour or 4 hours. This works out really well for mechanics when they are quite busy, because they can overlap time, to a limit, and get paid for more hours than they technically were there. It does not work well when times are slow. This means you can show up to work and if there’s nothing to do, you didn’t get any money. This has happened to my husband before and we did not like it at all so he got a new job with the old-fashioned by the hour principal. I wouldn’t mind the book time thing if they had a guaranteed pay per day (apparently some places do) even if there wasn’t work. It just doesn’t seem right that you show up to work and there’s nothing for you to do so you don’t get paid.

When he said he couldn't remember to bring a lunch --- It reminded me of an acquaintance who was constantly whining about being broke but always used door dash or the like to deliver her lunch at work every day. I suggested she make and bring her lunch to work. She rolled her eyes and said she didn't have time to do that much extra work. I reminded her she was in her 50's, no children, no retirement plans and was always blaming everyone for her problems. Sadly some people never learn.

@@its_jess4321 Agreed --- It is a mindset. But also a matter of choice too. I'm retired now, however when I was working full time I would spend Sunday afternoon cooking a couple basic meals like spaghetti, chili or meatloaf, that I could then package up for taking to my office for lunch during the upcoming week. Ditto making coffee at home and I opted to take a bus rather than have a car. Saved a bit of money every month that added up to a lot of money over a period of years.

To much abuse for kids in daycare. Kids that aren't old enough to speak up for themselves shouldn't be in daycare, really. He put himself in this it seems but the video title and tone is that she is the problem. If it was me I would think "Why should I risk my child's safety to pay a guy's debt that he created after telling me he would take care of me and my baby?" I assume they must have agreed she would stay home. Most women know it isn't just understood you will stay home. As soon as the baby arrives the situation changes and her money is going towards his debts? Not the baby, but his personal debts. Maybe they both owe on the trailer but he has racked up a LOT of debt on his own. Why not just move out and have less housework and stuff to deal with between him and the mother in law and get her own place, if her baby is going to be in daycare anyway? I say divorce.

Just up and leaving a $100k job for a $30k one across the country is absurd. As a Texan who has spent a significant amount of time in the PNW, I can say that he did not have to move all the way here just to escape the "riots". Just started the episode, so I am not sure if this is addressed later, but I wanted to mention that the "hours paid per job" for a mechanic is pretty normal. A job, such as an oil change, is assigned a certain amount of hours, and regardless of how fast or slow you complete it, you are paid the set number of hours. it is an incentive to finish jobs quickly. Some mechanics are able to make 100 hours of pay in a 40 hour work week.

@deirdrekiely6187 it's called the flat rate system. If a job is quoted at 8 hours and you finish it in 5, you still get 8 hours. Conversely, if it pays 8 hours and it takes you 12, you still only get 8 hours. We're w2 employees that are paid off of efficiency.

Caleb is spot on, him and his partner need to go to counseling. From his reaction to when Caleb said they may not be compatible really indicates that this is a convenience relationship. It’s convenient for her to not work and spend money, and for him to have his family and daycare taken care of. I definitely could be wrong, but I don’t think a man who thought they were with the right person would respond with “maybe” to that comment. If it ain’t a hell yes it’s a hell no.

I agree. If I was the fiancé, this video would make it very clear that the relationship was only for the sake of the baby on his end. I can’t see this ending well at all if she’s under the impression they are in love and he is happy for her to be at home (at the beginning of the episode he said he told her he was happy for her to be a SAHM). While I know people are getting on her in the comments, I think the mam may actually be the key factor in their struggle atm. He can’t support four people.

I have a buddy who I’ve tried setting up with a job. He complained a lot about his work situation, hours are just dwindling and he’s not willing to do anything about it. I helped with his resume, I had a full proof office job making $50k Cad for him but he refused. Didn’t want to take the 2 days of training I was going to give him for free and apparently the 1 hour bus ride was too long. Alright, so working a shit job at $20K is better apparently. So I gave up after 5 attempts to set him up. There was always an excuse. Too much labour, not enough labour, too little pay, too far, no car, etc. at a certain point I think you just gotta let people drown. Now this guy on the other hand is the polar opposite. He’s a hard worker trying to keep others afloat. And that’s the kind of person that deserves all of the help. Also Caleb, I don’t think those google charges are subscription. Based on the fact that they are such little amount, it seems like the wife might be paying for in app purchases. Candy crush, clash of clans, that kind of stuff.

Do something that helps out the home! Do the laundry, dishes, take care of the pets. Do all the things that the person working cannot do while they are at work. I cannot understand these significant others who stay at home BUT also don’t contribute to the home in any way shape or form. If you are stay at home your work is IN the home. You don’t get a free pass for your ass (😂😂😂🤣) to sit all day and do nothing. If fiancé can’t agree to his terms of getting out of debt, then unfortunately he needs to put brakes on any “marriage” talk and he needs to budget child support int lo his plan. IMO the child would end up in a better place than in a household with huge debt and all of the related drama that normally comes with it. This is a prime example of why you need to be very selective with who you engage in actions that will alter your life FOREVER. I didn’t have a child until I was forty, because I couldn’t find a woman that I was willing to take a chance with. I made sure I used protection, even with those claiming to be “taking care of it” themselves”. Too many instances where they really don’t.

If your spouse refuses to work on such a dire situation you dont have a Partner, give couples therapy a chance, once, if major changes arent made then divorce is the lesser evil, life is too short to waste it being the indentured servant for someone who dont even respects you.

To be honest the more tools the easier the jobs become the more money you can make (13 years as a mechanic 6 as a diesel mechanic) now I also fell into the "truck credit" scam but thankfully I got out of that. flat rate (pay per job) is both good and a joke because sometimes you make good money other times you spend 12 hours a day at the job and only make 4 hours that's the major issue

He did a horrible job explaining the need for tools and how the flat rate system works. Some of these tool companies have patents on certain tools that we need to get the job done. There is also a quality difference depending on what you're buying too. Being in automotive, or any trade, is expensive. That's the trade of not having massive college debt. I'd rather have $40k worth of tools that actually give me a measurable return than a $80k-100k liberal arts degree.

Used to be a motorcycle and atv mechanic … tools are no joke. Usually it’s pricey because they are warranties for life if anything happens to them. Also it can make a difference in shortening the time a job takes when you are flat rate like this guy . All that said, there are still better/smarter ways to get the tools .

I looked into buying a new manufactured home in 2018, after living in two previously. The first was given to me and was a 1982 model. The second one was a 1999 and was a repo that I had to fix. When I looked in a brand that had a good reputation for quality, then still having to “upgrade” a lot of it to something that would actually still be standing after it was paid for, the price was as much as a site built home.

Hate to say it but this guy is kinda screwed. Even if he cleared his debt, he pretty much obligated to assist his mother, and his Fiancé sounds like a deadbeat. Buddy will work himself into a early grave if he doesn’t get his situation under control. His girl needs to go to work, his money needs to contribute, he needs to get control over his spending. The good thing though is he’s clearly aware of the mess, knows it bad and can at least address it and not being oblivious to the situation.
