However ever since watching Caleb (right from the start) one of his first few videos I have been following a budget for 6 months, saved 10,000 emergency fund, opened a high yield savings account, paid off my car and more than 20,000 private student loan debt, and picked up a second per diem PT job . Personally, I would love to see more people that are competent with their money on the show! I feel like it would be cool to hear about the little money saving tricks here and there that people use, or see what their career and education paths have been like. One of my favorites was Graham Stephan's co-host, because he wasn't completely financially incompetent; just made a few bad decisions. Personally, I'd love to be on the show as well but I'm not in a bad spot. I'm 25 with no college, making just shy of 6 figures working for a DoD intelligence contractor. It would be cool for people to see my story, see how I got to where I'm at, and then follow in my footsteps. I'm also moving to a homestead soon where I'll be investing in some livestock and crops and trying to eat only what I've raised / grown, which I think would be a cool "before and after" type of thing.

I cringed when he mentioned starting “passive income” streams… it sounds like he’s listened to a lot of online influencers pitching how to make money. Truly passive income for just a little effort is a myth, rich people are the only ones that can set up real passive streams of income because it costs an obscene amount of money to start up and they pay people to manage everything for that… so it’s not really passive. And more income definitely wouldn’t help him, Caleb is definitely right that he would suffer from lifestyle inflation. He is very immature, and doesn’t understand that he needs to put effort towards getting out of his situation rather than leaving it up to a gamble and relying on other people. I do hope he learns from this interview and his mistakes, otherwise he’s going to stay in a bad financial position.

@@shaokhan2845Think about it this way. If you put in $100 with 7% interest, after a year you will be at $107. However, next year it'll be 7% growth of $107, so $114.49, $0.49 more made than the previous year. It doesn't look like much but it adds up very, very fast. Easiest way to think about it is that money your investment generates also generates more money on top of the original money. In a 40-year period it'll add up to ridiculous sums. Example: If you save $100 every month with a 7% interest rate for 40 years you'll be at around $240,000. However you will only have saved away $48,000, which means that 80% of the money in the account is generated by compound interest. You can run your own numbers with varying monthly saving, interest rates, and so on, by just looking up a Compound Interest Calculator.
@IntensePeppers Жыл бұрын
@@shaokhan2845 let's say you invest $1000. Over the course of 1 year you get a 10% return ($100), so now your investment is worth $1100. Next year, if you get the same 10% return (now on your $1100), it will be worth $110 instead of just $100. Rinse and repeat. Over time this becomes really powerful which is why it's so important to invest when you're young. An extra decade of compound growth at the beginning of investing makes a big difference

I was raised poor and always scraped by. 4 kids only 2 in the home now. Twin boys 16 years old. A couple years ago I started making a really good salary. I had never had that kind of money and I had zero finance education. I made stupid choices and got myself into $23,000 high interest debt. After watching your channel I am getting my shit together! Eating ramen and spending nothing. Last month I was able to make $500 extra on a card after the minimum payment. I downloaded mint and cancelled all subscriptions. I built a budget based on your advice. I plan to comment on your videos for accountability.

So instead of buying a ton of coffee and eating out, I did put some money into a gym membership. I find that on days I work out, Im way less likely to feel that impulse. If you pick up a drink and cannot stop, that is also alcoholic behaviour. An alcoholic isn’t always, and isn’t often, a person who relies on alcohol to survive. Just thought I’d add here, because often people think that they could never be x or y because they create very strict definitions for x and y, to make sure they don’t fit those definitions. If this guest didn’t start talking about finances or that isn’t the main point of therapy convo then of course it won’t be fixed in 6 months. I have a ton of clients who struggle with depression, and have some financial constraints and finances. Don’t normally come up for a little while. And it’s not going to be a typical question that Therapist asked in an intake about a client financial situation, because respectively it’s none of our business. There are plenty of Therapist. He won’t even start to have a conversation around somebody managing their money. It would probably suggest that getting outsourced to financial planner or something like that. Unless somebody comes in and says, I have a spending problem and it’s due to my mental health help me stop spending money and replace that behavior- it’s normally not that clear.

Caleb, one suggestion I have is to familiarize yourself with reliable used cars to possibly suggest to clients. A 2015 vehicle with 120k miles is not anywhere near its end of life! Many people enjoy cars and trucks from the mid 2000’s with 170-250k miles in a fairly reliable and safe manner. I would just hate for viewers with a 2012 car and 150k miles to think they need to immediately go buy something new thinking this is terribly unreliable when they are not in the financial position. Enjoying the show! Toyota and Honda mid size cars or SUVs own the market for reliable!

@albin2232 mostly, my husband is looking for work (health issues, unemployed for a year). I already have decent salary and put in too many hours for a 2nd job other than motherhood to my young kids. We're working on getting his VA disability too. If it backdates to his injury, we're looking at a big payout, even at the lowest %. Cutting expenses by moving in with in-laws (huge house) so rent will drop from 1200 to 900 a month or less. We also cut out eating out a couple months ago, which was our biggest bs waste. I borrowed from my 401k to pay off a bunch of credit cards. Working on the last 3. I have 3 years left on a car loan (5.29% meh), a covid personal loan is paid up next year (5.99% meh), another personal loan (11.74% yeek) paid up less than a year after that. Those payments are all going to be put towards the credit cards as they fall off. I may take another 401k loan next year if the disability isn't finalized just to get rid of high interest cc death debt sooner. I'd rather pay interest back to myself than a bank. Positives: I put 13% of my salary into 401k with a +1% escalation per year, my employer profit shares so I get another 10% of my salary even if I contribute 0%. Still not enough in retirement for my age bc I started saving late and now borrowed from it, but death interest was higher than market gains sooooo..... I max out FSA contributions for dependent care and medical care (tax break). I can probably cut back on dependent care contributions next year unless I need it for summer camp (depends on whether we get a good scholarship this year, otherwise we'll look for another option). Our biggest ?able expense is private school for our kids. It only goes to 5th grade so I'm hoping by then the small class sizes and personalized teaching will give my oldest the tools she needs to excel in public school from then on or at least until hs or when I can actually afford it. 😭 I also pay for short term disability and life insurance so we have some built in cushion should the unexpected occur, but no emergency savings unless you count gold (equates to about a month's worth) It's not all bad news, but it's still really bad. Definitely questioning my choices. I'm probably still on the shtlist for private school, but it's so wonderful for my neurodivergent girl, I have a really hard time pulling that plug. This year's scholarship was way better and may be even better next year so things are looking up. 🤞 At this point, I'm able to payoff new spending immediately while still paying off debt. I just have to stick to my budget (and make husband bring money in for once) 😊 Side bar, my dad started a 529 for the kids. I figured priority is making sure they don't need to financially support me in my old age. College contributions will come after debt/savings/retirement is under control. I also have a house that my ex rents to own so on paper I have lots of equity, but can't borrow against it since it's an investment property. Another questionable past me choice bc I could have made 100k or more off that sale (after paying the mortgage) otherwise. Oh well, ex and his family were good to me and stepped up when I was struggling. That's my good deed for this life 🤷♀️
