Elise, you should know that after law school, you will have to apply to your state’s court to be licensed/barred. One of the elements of that application is an extensive background check into your financial history. If there are records of you not paying your bills on time, the court may see that as evidence of dishonest character and it may complicate the process of you becoming an attorney. I just want to give you fair warning that if you do want to pursue law school, you need to get your finances in check ASAP. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

So many people opt for law school for the wrong reasons. 1. They didn't know what to choose. 2. Because the jobs they know off paid well/are good for their social status. 3. Because of preasure from parents. Most of them drop out after a year maybe 2 at most. At that stage they probably have heard enough horror stories to reconsider those "awesome" jobs and their motivation is gone.

As someone who just graduated law school and works at an Am Law 100 firm, waiting a few years to go to law school was the best decision I could have made. I worked as a paralegal, which gave me work experience that meant I was a very competitive candidate when applying for jobs. I also was able to save money, and my law school gave me a scholarship so I didn’t have to take out loans. Law firms and law schools like to see people who have worked for a few years. It’s not good advice to tell people they have to go straight through.

@@donaldlyons17it is important though. If she were super serious about law school and she felt it was her calling, then go for it. If she were going for a less important degree (coming from someone with a degree in English), it can be a total waste of money and time. I’m paying for a degree that I’m not even using because my parents were gung-ho on the whole “college degree means success” thing. Meanwhile, my brother went straight into the field I’m working in now and he is getting married and looking at buying a house. He has zero debt, he’s gaming the credit card companies for the rewards, and living like a king. If I hadn’t wasted four years getting a degree that’s next to useless, I’d be in a much better situation. Caleb, I think an episode explaining the basics of interest, rates and how it can affect your monthly payments on both a car note or mortgage would be hugely beneficial. School, parents and friends just do not prepare young adults for these things and a lot of younger people just don't know about this stuff and are clueless. When you are clueless, its not their fault! They have not been prepared. Helping people understand why and how it affects them would be a benefit imo. When people feel dumb or stupid, they don't ask questions at car dealerships and get a 17.17% interest rate.

Lawyer chiming in on this episode. She needs to focus heavily on having a pristine law school application, because the right law schools will give you big scholarships if you have a great application. I did it that way and ended up only paying about 9k in tuition, making $180k in my first job out of law school. It can be a great ROI if done correctly, or a horrible one if done poorly. Many low-ranked law schools are predatory diploma mills that will take students’ money but not prepare them to be able to pass the bar when the time comes. Best of luck to her. Editing so repeat what another comment says - state bar associations will look into your finances when you apply for the bar. I had to provide credit reports and all the account numbers for my student loans. Best to have her sh*t straight by the time she gets there.

I work in the privacy law field and there are tons of companies in the private sector with open positions. Identify a field of law in high demand with low supply, and your ROI will thank you for it. In her situation I’d highly recommend spending a couple years working full time before she considers law school. I’m a recent law school graduate. Besides my student loans, I just spent approx. $3500 on the Michigan bar exam. The culture at law school very much depends on students using personal loans to pay bills, and most schools actively discourage students from working (especially during the first year). I had a friend who was told by a professor that she would flunk law school if she kept her part time serving job. Those who do work are usually in unpaid internships. If she’s dead set on law school, then she needs to be prepared with an emergency fund and savings to pay her bills for three years. (Also, Caleb should have a lawyer on the show, it would be so illuminating for people considering law!)

I wanted to go to law school and I (and most others who planned the same) studied and took the LSAT during our Junior year, or during the summer before Senior year at the very latest. Then during the Fall semester of Senior year you apply to schools with your grades/LSAT scores. I also worked at an internship at a law firm during my Senior year, which I received school credit for. We have children very close together, and all 3 kids are currently attending universitiy. All of their education is paid for (no student loans). We planned for this situation early in the marriage. We saved and prioritized what to spend on and still enjoyed a wonderful life. Please, if people can get themselves out of debt and have a viable emergency fund, the stress level will be reduced. If and when life hands you a sh*t sandwhich, you can laugh it off since you have the money to take care of it. Money is not evil but a tool you have control over.

I totally agree w the original comment. The # of friends that immediately had their kids take out loans was unreal. To be honest, Gen. X was raised during the "invest your earnings, take out correct debt" days. They did not pay attention to the increasingly predatory nature of student loans. We were considered weird to be so focused on saving for our kids college. We still made the mistake of being overly attracted to prestige schools. So much vulnerability for students these days.
@ArtemisMaelstrom
@ArtemisMaelstrom 8 ай бұрын
@akaku9 so you want the long version: been surrounded by people in the university setting for over 30 years and seeing the changes over that time. The influx of lots of money into universities but the funds not keeping tuitions down and affordable. There is now a push to hire more adjuncts than keep the professors since they are more expensive to keep (lowering the knowledge and training base). The number of admin staff has increased to keep abreast to growing bureaucracy in the system. If you have eyes, you can see the issues, so it's best to plan things if you want to go into higher education. If you want to go to college, save now and practice minimal consumerism, and if you really want your kids to get a degree, pick something that can afford the lifestyle they want. Maybe provide something constructive to the conversation instead of a lazy ad hominem attack.

If you work hard and network you’ll have no problem finding a job, if you aren’t willing to do that you’d probably fail as a lawyer anyways.

Caleb asks everyone - ‘why?’ ‘why!?’ and many can’t answer it. I’ve been there too. Buried under debt. Not seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Not sure where to begin. So convenience foods and stupid spending doesn’t feel like it makes a difference either. My dad always has told me - until the pain of your choices hurts enough, you won’t make a change.

Sending LSAT support - I’m in the same boat! I’d really recommend taking a law adjacent job before applying to law school to get a sense of what areas of law you’re interested in while financially catching up! Also lets you work with attorneys to get a sense of whether it’s a path you want to pursue after all haha, some of them are STRESSED. Some of those jobs will be okay with you going part time during school, too. Best of luck to her.

She needs to talk to a lawyer and figure out if it’s something she really wants to do. As a person who just graduated from law school, it’s a lot of debt for most students and lawyers don’t make as much money as many people think. It’s kind of a “double-banded” market where one group makes decent money (60k-90k) while another makes ridiculous money (150k+ starting depending on the city, state, and area of practice). There’s also the public defenders doing god’s work but not making any money despite having the same degree that costs an average of 160k. One thing that she’ll need to start addressing is getting on time with debt. The Board of Law Examiners (bar exam people) actually ask for your credit report in some states and will need an explanation for any debts that are behind, and how you’re ethically dealing with your creditors. Edit to add I worked throughout law school. The board will tell you not to but who cares lol they won’t kick you out if you’re doing well 😂

I also worked for two out of three years of law school. I don’t even know what board she’s talking about. Most people who went to my school worked, and they also offered a night program for people who had other commitments. My advice on income is same as yours and the jobs are typically HARD. I have many peers who have regular old marketing jobs who make a lot more than I do.

I worked through the three years of law school myself, too. A large portion of the students in my class were the same. And good point on the Ethics portion of the bar application. The board wants to make sure any aspiring lawyers will be ethical, and severe financial struggles can be a red flag to someone reviewing the application. Large debts may be perceived that that person would be susceptible to committing financial fraud to get out of such debt.

Law School is far too busy for those partays. It’s study, study and more study. Here’s how cynical it is: I attended the LS First Year mixer, as the plus one. Someone asked if I was attending the LS and I replied I was the wife of a new student. They replied, “Good luck. Most spouses of Law School students end up in divorce before the student graduates.” I thought that was a horrid comment, but I did see people around us end relationships. It’s a rough road. You will be working hard, studying hard and that “experience” you are talking about doesn’t exist, unless that experience is study groups. You will lose your mind waiting a couple of months between bar exam and getting results. You also need to secure employment in a law field as an intern (clerking and the like). Those jobs are looking for people with a good head on their shoulders, grounded in reality and I just don’t see that with you. You need to be DRIVEN to succeed, not breezing through life, not accepting consequences for actions. I hope that you get out of this hole and I really want better for you in the follow up.

Warning: don’t play the taquitos drinking game with today’s episode. It’s not even clear that she has the aptitude to be a lawyer. You can’t just go to an expensive, specialized school (law, med, etc.) unless you are 100% dedicated and have the ability to follow through all of the obstacles. It’s a high risk with a potentially high reward that not just anyone can handle.

Interest on credit cards sucks! Something that motivates people especially if they're paid hourly is to tell them "you worked this many hours to just pay the interest on the card" when you put the time and money equation together that's really motivating to pay it off ASAP!

Caleb, just wanted to say watching your channel has been big for me the last 9 months! Last year I moved states after just getting by in NYC for a few years, got my ass in gear, but financed a car in November. After the down payment I still had $19K+ to pay off, was a 5 year loan. I said nah, F that, I'm paying it off in a year, by Christmas that'll be my gift to myself and so I busted my ass the last 10 months. Welp, I celebrated my 29th birthday 2 weeks ago and paid it off the day before my birthday...gifted myself a little early. Watching these audits I can say definitely helped light the fire. Preciate the work you do!

Caleb I think something that will help the gravity of the situation sink in is when you relate how much money their card or whatever took from them in interest. Instead of saying "XXXX dollars were taken, stolen from you this year", I think more people might relate to saying how many hours that amount equates to in their current job they're working. "XXXX dollars were stolen from you this year, that's 300 hours of your time that's gone and you'll never get back", or something like that.
