I haven't filmed a video onboard the sleeper for a while so thought I'd do another one on a recent trip of mine. This was filmed onboard the Inverness to Euston sleeper on Thursday 21st April 2016. Includes a look around onboard, including in the berth and some shots from the outside and out the window for the departure from Inverness & arrival at Euston. I also included a few shots of the locomotive change at Edinburgh and the run up the WCML in the early morning.
Locomotives featured were 73967 + 73966 working together from Inverness to Edinburgh, where 90045 took over for the 400 mile run to Euston.
Thanks for watching

When I first experienced the original EDLs at Eastleigh works and their busy activities on the south western mainline , even I couldn't imagine these delightful little locos working out of Inverness on the highland main line. They are truly remarkable locos and I'll always remember their fastest working of the day on 0215 Waterloo to Weymouth newspaper train...you could follow the train's progress as circuit breakers tripped at Walton on Thames, Sturt Lane, etc., and Eastleigh ECR always knew what train they had in section! Despite their gearing, the EDs often achieved well over 100mph on these duties and were much better than the converted Kent Coast EDs. Thanks for the video...I've often used the disabled person's sleeping compartment on the Caledonian Sleeper and hope that when the stock is next refurbished....the long grip handle running the length of rthe lower bunk bed is removed. Anyone occupying that bunk can't help but knock themselves during the night! Regards. Rob

Thank you very much, you listened to your subscribers! Can't thank you enough as I will be going from London Euston to fort William but on a standard single seat. I was told I would have to wait at the station at Edinburgh for an hour.. :( Thanks again mate!

Even better if the Class 73's had been rebuilt with a pantograph and a transformer so they could have hauled the Sleeper trains all the way from London to Scotland!

Travelled in a few 73's when I was on the rails meself albeit a lowly storesman and lampsman at Waterloo, they are incredible little locomotives that punched far above their weight for versatility and its heartening to know these little engines are still in great demand and what better than the highlands of Scotland where the turning rake is tighter than other regions and little engines like this would find them very easy going. It is a crying shame that the sister locos of 71 and 74 never survived especially the 74 which was like the 73 on steroids and one of SR's most potent engines across the classes, in fact when the WR's Warships invariably broke down on the Waterloo to Exeter service, the 74 was rolled in and towed the whole train back to WR metals, dead loco included and never broke a sweat.

Do you stop up at Edinburgh while you change engines and then go straight away to London or do you wait until daylight?

Great video, reminds me of my first sleeper trip 21/06/67 from London St.Pancras to Oban via Glasgoe St.Enoch. Had taxi to Queen St. then class 25 diesel to Oban. Still plenty of steam on freight over Settle & Carlisle line. Didn't sleep much very noisy at each station stop during the night but very exciting the first time.

Glasgow St Enoch Station closed in 27th June 1966. In June 1967 you would have routed into Glasgow Central. In the late 1960s the traction on the West Highland Lines to Oban/Ft William/Mallaig would have been Class 21/29 or Class 27

Isn't there a bit of 750 Volts DC in the Merseyside area? Enough for the Class 73's to top up their traction batteries?
@K-o-R
@K-o-R 8 жыл бұрын
That is true. They have batteries? I figured their honking great diesel engines would suffice.

They do not have traction batteries. They can run either from the 750 DC 3rd rail or as a Diesel electric loco. With the old 600 HP English Electric Diesel engine the traction motor whine could often be heard over the noise of the Diesel.

So, did they hook two trains together at Edinburgh? You seemed to have a lot more coaches when you left.
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 8 жыл бұрын
+neildKoR They never used to, they just swap over the electric loco that brought the Euston to Inverness (northbound) service up on to the Inverness to Euston (southbound) and the two diesel-electrics from the southbound service onto the northbound. There are a lot of long and steep gradients between Edinburgh and Inverness so they need the extra grunt, plus I don't think that section of the line is electrified yet, but Edinburgh to Euston is much flatter plus with it being an overnight sleeper service there isn't the pressure on time so it doesn't need to run as hard as a day service might do. I used to do this journey regularly as a kid, though never with a berth, being a kid I would have been too excited to sleep anyway... It looks different after Edinburgh in the video because the train leaves Edinburgh in the reverse of the direction it arrived in so the locomotive changes ends of the train, so between Inverness and Edinburgh the sleeper car he was using was immediately behind the loco and from Edinburgh to Euston his sleeper car becomes the last coach on the train...

When the train leaves Edinburgh for London it is formed of 3 portions from 3 places. Fort William, Inverness & Aberdeen :)

The logic is, given they also run using their diesel engines, they COULD run the whole way on diesel. I've only done the "sleeper" once......that was the London to Fort William sleeper run by Scot Rail. Scot Rail were utter wankers.....we joined the train at Crewe......we had pedal cycles with us......we were given contradictory information my the station staff and the train staff at Crewe. The train splits, so it is important you and your bikes are in the right coach. We got ZERO help as to where our berth was......in the end we were told to get on the rearmost coach with our bikes. This we did....... A Scotrail employee then told us that we must hurry to our assigned berth....seriously ....it was about fifteen carriages forward.....or they would give it to someone else....despite the fact we were on the fucking train and had paid in advance. We left our bikes with an assurance they would be on the right "split"...when our section went to Fort William. We arrived in our berth - 5 minutes after the train left Crewe. The CUNTS had let our booked berth to someone else. I flipped my lid and they did find us a berth after much threatening of legal action. When I made a formal complaint..........I was told that re-selling booked berths is "the industry norm"........even if people turn up 4 minutes late because they have been given false information and are at the wrong end of a 20 coach train. To be fair to ScotRail......they also managed to get our bikes to Fort William. But honestly.....they are fucking wankers!

I'm assuming that was before April 2015 when Scotrail and the Caledonian Sleeper separated. Before then, it would have definitely had ScotRail staff for the Sleeper but now it's operated by Serco separately from the Main ScotRail franchise which is operated by Abellio
