If we're not getting good Spring rains then where do you expect to get water.
@johnwang99144 ай бұрын
The redundancy is that all the district reservoirs is still being supplied by the Glenmore treatment system, it's just that only 80% of normal capacity can be provided by doubling the Glenmore system's performance. Perhaps a supplementary feeder from the Bearspaw system to the Glenmore system to make up the difference might be warranted especially as the main feeder will eventually have to be replaced and perhaps such a supplementary feeder had been planned towards the end of life of this feeder line. It's very rare for redundancy to handle full capacity, even the active active data servers often run both se vers well over 50% hence the failure of one server can't be fully compensated for by the remaining server.

Well, obviously as the line is currently shut down, a more complete inspection is possible by sending a wheeled or tracked robot through the emptied pipe so issues that could not otherwise be detected will of course be found. Obviously when there is a pressurized flow, the concept of a robot probe for visual inspection would be severely impaired by the flow of the water itself. The question is whether or not the acoustic detectors which did not detect these problems can even be considered sufficient as more such otherwise undetected problems have been found is the question now. The acoustic detectors may have been state of the art fifty years ago but what are the practices now? Are there other approaches such as maybe a pulse reflectometer on the tension cables and steel pressure sleeve or will that cause galvanic corrosion. Has anyone even use an electrical pulse reflectometer to monitor a water pipe before, we use such techniques to evaluate power lines and communication lines including the early thicknet and thinnet shared common media coaxial ethernet but except with power lines, it is an unusual monitoring practice outside the lab despite how easy it is to implement.
@HONDAVFRV44 ай бұрын
Not all the pipe has been inspected, only 2km of it. How much of the pipe that they can't get in to is also damaged. Funny thing is, only the other day she said the pipe was in good condition. She must mean from the point of view if you have a flat tire, well it is only flat at the bottom.
@johnwang99144 ай бұрын
@@HONDAVFRV4 Yes, that is a problem, even when emptied, the ability to inspect the pipe is limited by cable length for both power, and controls/video so only a certain distance from the cut out could be inspected. I would presume that depending on what remediation would be needed at the other sites, the pipe may be cut open again and the opportunity to inspect more of the pipe will exist but that also means we may see this outage extended further as more problems are found. Hopefully, they would be contacting the robot's manufacturer to see if longer cables can be used or if wireless versions of such robots can be procured on short notice. I'll bet the robot's are custom made as a former classmate of mine did build similar probes for the city back in the early 90's. Of course, we still don't know if those other flaws would be mediated by just excavating and wrapping the pipe with additional tension reinforcements or if the segments would be cut out and a metal segment spliced in which would give another opportunity to deploy robots. Also, they have yet reported the severity of the flaws found, and whether these flaws were or weren't detected by the acoustic monitoring and reinforcement procedures. All the more reason for my question as to what are the current state of the art for monitoring such pipes and whether techniques such as a pulse reflectometer which is in use with our electrical grid and was albeit infrequently used with the old pre switch, pre twisted pair ethernets and of course is easy to do in the lab with a pulse generator and an oscilloscope might be something we could do even if it might be an ad-hoc lab set up (lab pulse generators might not have the needed power for the length and mass of pipe but those flaws should certainly send back reflections that could not be attributed to known fittings and bends of the pipe). Perhaps they should extrapolate the number of flaws found by the robot to the entire length of the pipe and estimate the repair duration to include those as yet undetected flaws but based on what's in thesw announcements so far, I can only surmise that there is significant potential for the repair duration to be greatly extended over the next week. Extrapolating the duration calculation may be better than repeatedly adding another five to seven days with each cutout allowing further inspections. On previous public announcement videos, I commented that a relatively small supplementary feeder line from the Bearspaw system to where it could connect with the existing Glenmore system might make up the difference between providing the 80% and the 100% that people expect and the military is already practiced in laying out such surface lines to do just that. Of course, it would be far more complicated as just changing the flow of water risks further breaks by introducing new stresses as we had with nearby parks being flooded after the break, but perhaps it's time to ask the military engineers if the closure of a few streets for a surface line could make up the difference. At least the weather would be amenable for such an effort. As I noted before, the public is quickly tiring of the conservation efforts and water use has been rising, if methods of extending the supply can't be found, the consequences will be districts that will have insufficient supply which requires not only replenishing the district reservoirs, but flushing and testing before the boil water restrictions can be lifted, just one district running low on it's reservoir could dramatically increase the amount of water required just to flush and re-pressurize, we could get ourselves into a downward spiral here.
