Can someone explain what the individual riders are doing running along with the wagons ?

sorry pretty late but since i actually work there i think my knowledge would help. The outriders are part of the Chuck race and follow as best they can (think of traditional thoroughbred racing along side the actual race). In the rangeland derby (stampede) there are two outriders per one chuck team. one outrider at the start stands at the rear of the chuck with a simulation camp stove, and the other's job is substantially harder as he is responsible for and needs to have enough strength to start and guide the four horses around the first barrel. once the horn sounds, the outrider hurls the stove into the back of the chuck and jumps in his saddle all the while the other outrider and the chuckdriver start and guide the horses around the barrels. once the outriders complete their jobs, they race after their chuck driver on horse back. if they finish too far from their respective chuckwagon, they will receive a hefty time penalty as well as if the chuck or the horses knock over/crush barrels.

@Faiza Kousar They never were abusing them. You know where these horses come from right? All these horses used come from the racetrack, and these take these horses that weren't very good at racing and give them a second career where it doesn't matter if their good or not, which you animal rights ppl should be happy about bc you guys think all racehorses go to slaughter once finished racing and this is very obvious proof that they don't. One wagon driver, Jason Glass, actually owns a horse that ran in 1988 Kentucky Derby. And these horses love to do this, you can tell they do. They are very well cared for and there is tons of rules in place to protect the horses and keep them safe. So how about doing some knowledge and actually attending a chuckwagon race before assuming things that aren't true. I've been a chuckwagon fan for as long as I can remember and have never thought anything they do is abusive

@Faiza Kousar Oh also, before you claim that the barrels must hurt the horses when they run over them. If you watch enough of these, you'll see the barrels are completely collapsible and can be easily crushed by the wagons, which don't weigh much at all. They're essentially made of the same material that a floating lantern is made of. Very lightweight material, very flimsy material that doesn't hurt at all when a horse hits it

@@montanamountaingarden476 Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t horses meant to run it’s in their DNA 😂. I take it you also hate people who criticize this industry for so called “abusing animals “ smh 🤦♀️

@@dariuspayne3075 Yes horses are meant to run, but TBs have been bred specifically for running and for racing for centuries upon centuries. And yes I do hate ppl who say this sport is abusive bc it is no more and no less abusive than any other equine sport out there. Accidents happen in every sport, you have to accept that.

So you want a breed of horse to vanish? These are bred to race not ride. Stupid horse advocates
