elephants should not be on concrete an they should not be in northern climates. Hosing down an enclosure has nothing to do with proper care. Get those animals out of Canada.

Zoos should be banned and all of the animals sent to sanctuaries. Zoos are no more than prisons, with no chance of parole....except that the animals have committed no crime. So very sad. :(

To be honest, With all the poaching going around, Zoo's are actually helping. PLEASE! I BEG YOU TO NOT SUPPORT ANIMAL ACTIVISTS! THEY ARE OUTRIGHT LIARS! Here is proof: www.petakillsanimals.com/top-12-lies-of-animal-rights/ Plus sanctuaries are like the same thing.

I know this thread is old, but the Calgary Zoo (and all AZA accredited zoos) contribute to Species Survival Plans which boost wild populations of animals (the Calgary Zoo helping Vancouver Island Marmots and Whooping Cranes). Although yes, the animals should be in the wild, but they are well taken care of and have constant enrichment options to supplement for less space.

@@Automedon2 I'm in Calgary and we had several elephants including many calfs for decades. They had a massive indoor out door enclosure with free access at will in/out. Below zero weather and snow never even phased them. They actually play with the snow. Over decades if there was even a hint that something not happening right for the elephants along with the other long time large animals there would be holy hell to pay coming for the city population. With all our oil money there has never been an issue. There has never been a problem come up and there is a large part of the population that keeps themselves informed about the Zoo. Our elephants were happy and healthy here and they went to this facility and arrived in perfect condition mentally and physically. The zoo is moving more and more to a research facility and genetic archival survival storage of food plant species bank.

@@MrBonners Toronto already sent their elephants to live in California because they realized they do not belong in northern climates. It's time for Calgary to do the same. Almost 100% of elephants kept on concrete floors develop crippling arthritis. A 3 ton elephant standing on hard surfaces all day becomes crippled - just as humans do. Easy as that to understand.

@@Automedon2 The temperatures of around 0 and even slightly below does not bother an animal of that size. They would get frisky on a brisk day and play keep away with their huge ball and push and shove a block the gateway game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH3ZqqKKaqhqnZI Years ago.

They don't pull hard on the hooks. The animal is big so that just like a tap on the shoulder. "come over here" "Here I am, don't step on me". You do the same with a horse but an elephant is so much smarter so much more complex touch communication can be achieved. There is a huge outdoor compound that they have free and full access to 24/7. This is just the barn and pool area. They go in there for food and the stuff in this video and to get out of bad weather.
