An inbuilt reel line counter will only give consistent measurements if you always use the same diameter line and spool the reel to the same amount. Even if you use the technique shown here, where does that leave you if you lose a chunk of line with a break off? Best way I can see is to spool your reel with an external line counter, noting what the reel's counter reports at, say, every hundred feet that the external counter indicates. Then experience with your gear will tell you which number should show on your reel for the depth you want.

Good video. The calibration, is good at 100' but it seems it would be off at more or less than that. How do you know how much to compensate if casting more or less than 100'? Thanks.

Thank you! I never have more than 100 ft of line out before attaching a planer board so for me the measurements will be accurate and consistent with my other reels under 100ft.

Wouldn’t you count it from the tip versus the reel

Thanks, but that's not "calibrating" that's "compensating". Calibrating deals with offsets of the counter. Wish these companies offered a setting (gear ratios) built into the counter to adjust footage/yards with the diameter of line being used. Whether you're using 10 lb braid or 80 lb mono. 100 feet is a huge difference between them two. Compensating by adding/removing line only helps for that distance.

Exactly. The line counters are attached to the SPOOL, not to the line going out. So a Super thick ROPE will drop the spools diameter much faster than a very thin braided line. Accuracy, by spool gauge, or linecounter would be way off with ROPE. MAYBE,,,, someone with a huge brain could actually show 'US' the difference,,,, between a spool of 'ROPE", & some very small OD sowing thread? Say at 300' out? & yes BUMPNrun,,,, NOBODY talks about the most important stat,,,,, What is the cranking gear ratio at FULL SPOOL!? I'm OLD,,,, my fingers HURT! I want a 500 to 1 WINCH to EASILY crank in my dipsy & 10# EYES !! ;>) lmbo,,,,,👍👍👌

I'm surprised with today's technology we cannot find a viable solution yet. Guess I'm going to have to do some R&D.

YOU DIDN'T MEASURE FROM THE TIP OF THE ROD, ONCE YOU RUN LINE THROUGH THE EYES IT WILL BE 6 TO 8 FOOT DIFFERENCE THAN THE ORIGINAL NUMBER.!???

The only thing that matters is that the measurement is from the same point each time.

Most fisherman don't realize that being off two feet when trolling will cause you the have to reel another half a crank, more or less.In one trip alone it could mean ten cranks in either direction. You're being sarcastic, right?

Agreed. I make note of which reels end up off throughout the year and calibrate a few times a season with new line.

When I was in the army the taught me things like land nav and measuring distances. You sir did not measure that correctly an I would almost bet that the reel was correct and you were two feet off.

It's a basic measurement. The important thing is that all my reels are calculated the same way. This works for me and I have a countless amount of 10lb or larger Walleyes to show for my efforts. I hope it helps someone else also. Thanks for your service.

The reel counter works indirectly measuring the number of rotations of the spool. It does not measure the line directly and is only an appropriation anyway. The counter is only ever indicative at best.
