California Delta commuters stymied by unreliable ferry service

Two ferry boats that are essential to commuters in the California Delta near Rio Vista are frequently out of service -- often at the same time -- and it has been this way for years. Wilson Walker reports. (9-29-22)

Well, if California State Government is involved in any of the ferry maintenance/administration then you have the answer to 3/4 of the problems. Unfortunately, any positive change is going to be a long and complex process; The state needs to give the Washington (or Alaska) state ferry people a call-THEY actually know what they are doing and have ten times the responsibility and resources to manage. I feel sorry for these folks that have to rely on this system in the Delta.

The original Real McCoy was a simple reliable vessel. Unfortunately Caltrans doesn’t know how to listen to people who know how to fix these problems. The Riovista bridge also regularly is broken.

It’s amazing what incompetence at the higher supervisor levels who are completely inept at knowing how to train the proper staff and keep the proper staff to maintainance technical equipment of the stature. Just think they’re going to hire anyone off the street with minimum skills at a minimum pay rate. And see what happens This happens all over the world when those in charge are technically incompetent about the equipment they purchase

There have been ferries operating on Ryer island for probably 75 years or more. The problem is Caltrans doesn’t know how to keep their boat operational.

As someone who stands to benefit nothing from this, I'm happy for my tax dollars to go towards this. That is the attitude we need more of in the US. Stop thinking about you and only you, but everyone around you. When the society around you functions, so does your business. Even if your just an employee, you wont have a job if your business can't survive.

I use to ride on both ferries, taking equip to farmers for their wells, water systems... I retired 3 years ago, they are still having problems...BUILD A BRIDGE IT WILL SAVE TAXPAYERS MONEY .... THE REAL MCCOY FERRY HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR YEARS......

It's where they grow all the rice.. in the Sacramento River Delta. Rio Vista and Isleton are the closest to the Bay Area. I used to live in Rio Vista it is a little piece of hell lol.

The Ca Air Resource board is the reason this Ferry is unreliable. This machine is heavily weighed down with ARB "approved" equipment which has rendered it unreliable. Not the fault of the department of highways or the operators.Caltrans cares they hate the way government mandates have caused the unreliability.
