Learn "Cross harp". By playing the harp key of the middle chord of any blues song, (inhale hole 3, blow hole 4 - the ",key" hole, inhale hole 6) with the I, IV,V chords of 12 bar blues. For ex: blues in E = E,A,B (use A harp). You can bend notes more easily, so early blues players used this and developed "Cross harp" to take advantage of this. They were all about mo'feelin' and less tech, as most were self taught and couldn't read music. With Cross harp, you can play almost every blues song...today!. You're welcome. (PS Neil young, Dylan play "straight harp" keyed in the same as the song, often the first chord)

Been practicing this for a while now and almost have it down. This has been extremely helpful for getting better with 3 draw bends and getting that 4 overblow. Thank you so much!

So pleased to hear you're making good progress with this song. I always found it enjoyable to try learning a tune I really liked, even if it was challenging, because the hard work was worth it to have that song down. More interesting than playing scales with tricky bends.

You sure make kewl sounds on your harp--real technique there. Just impressive, fantastic. Makes me fantasize of playing that good someday--very inspiring. Thank you!

C_ Bazel Thanks so much! I hope you really get the harp bug! It's addictive :) I started playing a long time ago and really enjoyed it for many years. Then I pretty well gave up playing for a long time. It's only in the last 5 years that I've started playing again and I'm as enthusiastic now as when I started. It's such a great instrument and so easy to carry round and practice on. Keep on Harpin' !

In 5 years, you can play like a veteran professional? Genuinely, that is what I would call true talent. Yes, I have the bug for sure. What brand and model were you playing in your video? Let me guess, what is the special 20? That's all I hear about. I need a cheap brand.
@GreyOwl-Harmonica9 жыл бұрын
C_ Bazel I use the Special 20 on recordings quite a lot especially my Bb which plays great. On this song I used a Marine Band which has an edgier raspier tone. They are around the same price as the Special 20 but are smaller in the hand and have a wooden comb which can swell over time and give problems. I would recommend the plastic comb harps such as the Special 20 or the Suzuki Harpmaster (a real nice harp about the same price range as the other two) You can buy cheaper harps but I'm not a fan because they are often not great (harder to play bends etc.,) although you can get lucky sometimes.

***** Thank you so much for sharing your opinion of harmonicas. I saw a review by Jake Knows Harmonica and he was pretty impressed with the Fender Deville, have you used one of those? He said they are so similar to Special 20. I have watched this video about a dozen times, your playing is like a person's voice, you snarl and go into the height of a singer's voice. I have learned from your video and will continue to. Keep making these videos!!!

@GreyOwl-Harmonica4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much I'm pleased you liked it. I was very lucky that I just had vibrato naturally so didn't have to learn it. However if I try it on the 4 hole draw it is not as strong especially on higher pitched harps when I struggle to get it.

What key and what type of harmonica are you using to play this song? I tried doing it on my C harmonica which is a diatonic Blues Harmonica and I couldn't get all the notes. I was trying to thinking about doing real micromatic but I'd rather do it on the the regular harmonica so I can have it on my harmonica Rack while I'm playing guitar. Please help

Just an add-on note, I just tried it on my a minor natural minor harmonica I seem to get more than notes but it's still not happening at the way I think it should. Could you give me a little help on this please?
@GreyOwl-Harmonica2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I don't know much about natural minor harmonica except they have a different note layout than the standard major key blues harps. So my tabs won't be of any help to you unless you get a standard C harp in which case you would be able to use my tab and play along in tune with me. You should also note that my version includes draw bend notes that might account for you not being able to play certain notes, if you're not familiar with this technique.
