Go all the way down until the reel won't turn at all, then in tiny increments raise it until both sides of reel gently touch the bed knife.

I just made the mower jig you described from scrap wood. It fits my 20" trucut as well as my mcclane 17". Thank you so much. Your video is simple, to the point, and very clear. I know it's going to make my life a lot easier when maintaining my mowers. In addition I was wondering what those adjustment posts were for! I also have a feeler gauge that I've had since the 70's!

The adjustment post are how you adjust the reel to bedknife on the California trimmer. One directions tighten and the other direction loosens. It’s a really nice feature on the California Trimmer. I appreciate the support and the kind words 👍🏻

you have the right concept, just done differently. on greensmowers they use .001 feeler gauge clearance on the ends of the reel. once they have that gap they backlap. thats how they make sure its the correct distance on each side

A rotary mower maybe a better option as you don’t see too many benefits to a reel mower at those Heights. If you even do go with it, a 5 blade option may also be a better choice.

Would be interesting to know what size feeler gage would fit when you started and which size you ended up with when cutting paper.

Great comment!!! Appreciate it!! I am not positive of where it was at the start when it wasn’t cutting paper and my best guess is 0.0025 inch or 0.06mm or even maybe 1 or 2 setting higher than this measurement. I know that when i finished it was at 0.002 inch or 0.05mm. I hope this helps but want to just clarify that these are not manufacture specs just want i had determined through my novice approach. Lol. I appreciate the support !!!👍🏻

I notice with my california trimmer if the reel contact isn't tight with the bed knife it won't cut paper. Is this normal or should I backlap?

Probably needs a backlap or sharpening. When test with paper you don’t want to a paper that is extremely thin. Normally printer paper double folded should be good. Sometimes people use a too thin of a piece of paper to check and over tighten there reel. Also when mowing as the mower heats up and the reel heats up the tolerance will change and get tighter which is why you don’t want to over tighten to start. Hope this helps

Is the reel to bed knife adjustment the same on the 25” as it is the 20”? Thanks in advance. It’s almost impossible to find videos on the 25” but I’m leaning toward the larger unit. Just worried about HOC, reel to bed knife, backlapping etc being as user friendly on that unit as it is the 20”

Just remember the more minimal the contact the more often you may need to adjust to maintain that minimal contact.

Mine tends to not cut paper in the middle but easily does on each side. What could be done?

Couple things to double check. Not likely but make sure you are not missing a bedknife screw. It sounds more like a bedknife issue but hard to tell without knowing for sure. You also want to make sure you are balanced on each of side of the reel. If you too low or too high on either side it could cause the issue. Lastly would also depend on how long it’s been since a backlap or sharpening. If everything seems to be fine and the reel to bedknife isn’t too tight and it’s still not cutting, i would recommend a backlap or sharpening to get it cutting again.
