As a PI in California I am coming to the same conclusion you have. It doesn't seem to be worth the time and expense to go after these. Most people think it is a scam. The people I have talked to who did not know about the money tell me the same thing I would say "I will just claim the money on my own." It takes a lot of time to work these and it is just not profitable. I think the only people making money off of unclaimed funds are the people selling courses to the general public.

My Grandma had a policy for 60 with MTA life that Conseco bought and sold to WILTON RE . My Grandma showed me a draft she had to draw cash from it, it had $27k! In 2014 she died and WILTON RE said they were giving it to the state for about a year and then said they didiunt have it it was sent to the state, the state (Ca) says they never got it!

I'm wondering after you find and inform the party, they are owed money from the State of California, if the party could then just go to the unclaimed property database and claim the funds directly for themselves? Thereby not allowing you to collect the 10% or so for your efforts. Is this an issue?

If a PI or an Unclaimed Property Investigator sends me a letter saying that they have located Unclaimed Property/Money, what's to stop me from just looking myself up on the website and claiming it on my own? I ask because it seems to be a lot of work that could evaporate if someone just decides to claim the money without your services.

That’s a great question. Absolutely nothing can stop others from reclaiming money you found. From what I found over the years is that many of these people who reach out to you already know where the money is however many times they are trying to conduct a fraudulent claim and use you as a scapegoat. The claim is fraudulent because there are other family members entitled to the claim.

When you say to sign and notarize a letter in case any other family members try to claim the money later, isn't that all already covered in the paperwork that California provides? They have the table of heirship form that needs to be completed for deceased claims or am I missing something?

I apologize for the late response. Yes, you are correct about the Table of Heirship; however this video attracts private investigators and non - private investigators. If you are a PI, I’d recommend protecting yourself with a written clause in the contract. It would be so simple as to mention the Table of Heirship.

So technically even if your name matches...you can't claim it. No matter if those funds had been unclaimed for years.. I'm in Texas btw.. I'll give it a try..the worst that can happen is they will deny my claim, right?

Yes, You have to at least give it a try and be prepared to prove the claim however the state sees fit.

Jorge Tejeda You don’t need a PI license. If you provide unclaimed property investigations, then you do have a business. Whatever your real name is, is your business name.

A notary will not help you. You’ll need an attorney or you can file an appeal on your own.

The county is full of crap.My dad sent paper work for my grandma who died.sent copy of will and everything.Then they just bs and ask for more paper work.So ok it wasnt much so he let it go.Then he try collecting his own money giving his id and some more info.There they go again with the we need more info.My dad name is a rare name and what the chance my dad going to give them our address. I think it comes down to the subject you go into starting at 6.51 excepts his wasnt work but a insurace company.They said they have their own internal research.So these idiots cant go get the same info i do.I can clearly look my dad up and link our old address with the new one and no it the same guy.Then double confirm it with a i.d card.Im curious since your are register with them do they treat you a little better then the individual?

Jose I Monge yes I do they actually just recently updated the downloadable pdf it’s A LOT though. It’s 3 files however when I download the zip file I delete files 1&2 because the amounts listed aren’t worth the time. File 3 is 5k up to over a million dollars.
