In 2017, I was worried about the people near Lake Oroville and was so relieved when I learned of your work. In 2005, my community was eliminated by hurricane Katrina and had longed for information like you offer. Nothing was available. It was way back then. Since the 2017 problem at the lake, I watched every moment of the Mighty Luscombe as it monitored all the repairs. During the drought, you kept us informed of all the happenings, in a way that was complete, yet easy to digest. The work you do is so important, not just to the local area, but you Juan are vital in knitting a community Together, TOGETHER, when so many others work to separate a community into politically digestible bits. You seem to be a good guy, a very bright guy, who automatically acts to get us all working together. Thank You Sir, for all the wonderful work you do, and the fine example you set !! I am a retired Psychiatrist and watching your videos since 2017 helped me greatly. You reminded me of how we Should act.

Thank you for the update Juan. When I lived in So Cal in the 70's water consevation projects were happening all over the state and seeing how well the planning has performed as designed is a good thing to see. Sacrifice some acreage to gain water storage is a fair deal since droughts happen in the western states all the time. I remember some years in the 70's we never seen snowcapped mountains in the winter and summers were super hot and dry.

Great video Juan, The highway that passes through Corcoran is highway 43, not highway 99. I’ve been commuting for years on highway 99, and to see the water flowing underneath the highway from Cross creek (which is fed from Kaweah Lake) is amazing. They’re letting just enough out to keep from flooding highway 99.
@fuppywith Жыл бұрын
Indeed. Highway 43 is inundated in several places now. The BNSF Railway right-of-way, running alongside Highway 43, was threatened near Angiola, so much so that Amtrak service to Bakersfield was truncated at Fresno for several days while BNSF frantically dumped rip-rap and ballast to raise the track profile there. Flooding at Poso Creek also washed out the BNSF tracks there for a couple of days. As an Amtrak Locomotive Engineer who works San Joaquin trains between Sacramento and Bakersfield, I expect to see more service interruptions this year as the snow begins to melt.

Hi Juan thanks for this video I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I haven’t been in California since 2014 I lived there for 44 years. One thing I might want to add is when they pump the water up and over the Tehachapi they have large hydroelectric generators at the bottom of the LA or south side to recapture some of the electricity they used to pump the water up from the north side.

I live right next to Castaic Lake. It is at 91%. It rose by 2 feet yesterday. Thats huge. The aqueduct flows straight through the and lake system. So Castaic Lake is being released into Castaic Lagoon, which is being released into Castaic Creek which is going to the Santa Clara river. Santa Clara river is flowing and it flows all the way out along the 126 so if the farmers out there are looking to capture water it’s coming they have it.

One concern regarding the floodwaters refilling part of the old Tulare Lake bed is the clay soil there does not drain well. Very little will replenish the aquifer. Most of the floodwater in the lake bed will be standing water evaporating over several years. Historically, generations ago when the massive shallow lake was filled with fish and birds, mosquitoes spreading malaria were a big public health problem. Contemporary mosquitoes carry a variety of public health threats in addition to malaria, so not only will there need to be major mosquito abatement efforts as the floodwaters recede statewide, but the flooded portion of the old lake will be a mosquito haven for several years until the water evaporates.

Great briefing, Juan. A couple of trivial things. DWR measures snow depth, but most importantly, they measure snow water, equivalent (SWE), which is what those percentages you cite are for the northern central and southern Sierra. It’s the Tule River, not the Tulare river. That may have just been a slip of the tongue. Also, the operator of Lake Shasta Reservoir is the US Bureau of Reclamation, it is part of the Central Valley Project or CVP. - 😅, recovering retired Hydologist

@@adel19997 I guess you could call it that. But what it really is, is a place for L.A. to dump its waste on other counties because they don't want their part of the state to stink. We have aerial flooding in Florida. Standing water is routed out of neighborhoods through swales and greenways, and further to ponds or canals at river or sea level. Thankfully, our flood control system is tried on a regular basis, but the occasional record precipitation (mesoscale?) event exposes problems. Again, thankfully, local engineers can move to clear brush, remove obstructions from pinch points, rip-rap or channelize greenways, and take other actions in response to intermittent flooding, so that the system becomes efficient. I foresee water management issues arising out west as melt season charges up your many flows, but I'll admit it's exciting to learn about the organization in place after a hundred years of engineering. Good luck, and better weather in the future!

Everyone in CA should watch this especially those in Southern California where we live on water handouts. It is so complicated; much more than just the CA Aqueduct.
