Wineries have priced themselves out of a customer. They ratcheted up prices to appeal to the boomer wallet as a luxury item and effectively collapsed a greater market potential. Wine is a staple of life. Go to Italy or France and wine is a daily food substance. On a fundamental level wine is simply fermented grapes. In this contracted economy expect to see many wineries go bust.

Born in northern SLO county in the 80's... it went from beef cattle grazing to vineyards in my lifetime. They didn't have enough water for the cows back then... now they have millions more vines than than there ever were cows and those vines drink 6 gallons of water per vine per day when its 100F outside... The irony is the "herd mentality" that made all the land owners think that converting from cattle grazing to vineyards was the good move... bet they wish they had beef for sale right now instead of grapes... Now I live in Sonoma county... its even worse here because so many wealthy owners and corporate investors, who have no real interest in wine making, bought up big vineyard and winery properties as investments... mostly to invest their money in real estate and have a business to take losses from. They don't really care if they lose some money because the whole project is just a tax shelter for them anyway. The losses aren't hurting them the same way as a vineyard that needs to be profitable to make ends meet. You will see the same arc with cannabis in a few years. Flooded markets, way too many farms and lots of wealthy players who don't strictly need to be profitable to survive....

Love this channel and as a Californian, I greatly appreciate the content of this channel however, as much as my heart goes out to the farmers, the biggest reason (IMHO) they have seen a massive drop off in interest/purchase of California grapes/wine is because of the glyphosate/chemtrail issue in California…more and more people are realizing their wine (and produce) from California is riddled with chemicals. I rarely purchase wine anymore but when I do, I never buy anything from California, I only purchase items from countries that have much more strict regulations around chemicals. I wish there had been more questions around this end of the issue because it is not an insignificant part of the equation

This guy is just coping. The real reason the industry in California is dying is because of costs and CA regulations. The cost of gas, transportation, taxes, permits, salaries, leases, rents, equipment, etc. etc, etc., etc. The fact that he is not addressing this means it is nowhere near being resolved or fixed. That is great for wine producers in other states. The dude just wants government subsidies. Socialism. Pathetic.

The grapes grown in the vineyards are not good for eating. Just like some oranges are good for eating and others are only good for juicing. My in-laws have the latter oranges. The oranges have too much pulp in them to eat. Making orange juice, where you can strain out a lot of the pulp, is the best use of those oranges. Wine grapes are soft, hard to transport without falling apart. Also, there is less fruit meat in them, so they are perfect for juicing. So, when you bite into a wine grape you get some bitter juice, sour skin and some seeds.
@davidb22062 күн бұрын
They need to offer a better product. I don't buy wine anymore because it's all loaded with sulfites. Why don't you offer sulfite-free, organic wine, which I would buy? Why don't you sell some of the crop as ORGANIC fresh grapes? You are not being creative and meeting the actual market demand. So, it is no surprise that you are losing out in the marketplace. You are just doing what all the competition does, which is trash.

While the rest of the state is seeing wineries underperforming due to increased competition in Sonoma, Napa, Temecula, Paso Robles etc, in San Diego winery sales have increased over the past two years. San Diego's vineyard scene is still up and coming, so that may be why but its also full of retirees who just do it as a hobby and so their wines tend to be very affordable and they're great. At Grant James Vineyard in Ramona I had two wine tastings and a bottle for $40. I stopped going to Napa or Temecula after that and enjoy the wine scene out here.
