I live 30 miles south of SF in in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. We grow and make wine from mostly Bordeaux varietals, pinot noir, chardonnay and also some other varietals. I have been to many wine growing regions in California and the variety and quality of wine is as diverse as the State is large. California is most known for the big cabernet sauvignon wines produced in Napa I strongly encourage your followers to seek out some of the lesser known wine makers and explore California Rhone blend wines. Really world class.

Have you visited the El Dorado AVA, (Cantiga Wineworks specifically?) My tasting friends and I went back to that AVA two years in a row, because it's just that good!

I have lived near Sacramento most all my life and have tasted all regions. A couple of my lesser known favorite regions are Lodi and Amador. The climate and soil are excellent for Zinfandel. Both areas tend to be warmer and produce fruit with higher sugar and thus equally higher alcohol. The heavy clay soil produces a Zin that's fruit forward and can be very spicy.

I love the diversity of styles in California. Although I’m not the biggest Cab fan I was blown away by the hospitality in Napa Valley. That being said the Sta. Rita Hills AVA has to be my favorite. The terroir is impeccable with super unique soil and a transverse mountain range that captures the cooling influences of the pacific paired with hardworking wine makers who really try to get the most site expression out of their PN. Being a SoCal native I have to give a shout out to Temecula as well, definitely not on the same level as the central coast quality wise, but do some really interesting things that go beyond the classic international varieties. Great summary of the state history you know more than most Californians do!

We have spent a month in St Helena, CA for the past 3 years and usually do a different tasting a day ( 2 a day when we have guests). We still have only scratched the surface as there are ~ 600 wineries in the vicinity. We plan to return next September. We have many small family wineries to recommend if anyone is interested.

I'm from Livermore, California! Not as well known, but we have over 60 wineries and vineyards with yummy wine. Hot climate, so wines have a lot of power!

I live in Cali and my favorite region is Paso Robles. It is booming and growing faster than any other region. Their wines are beginning to receive 100 points ratings, top 10 in the world, etc. If you enjoy big wines that are fruit forward and huge flavor, this is the place. It's supposed to have the highest diurnal shift in the country (up to 50F). most of the wines I drink are in the $30-$70 range. I enjoy Napa and Sonoma as well, but they don't have the expression that Paso provides.

Previously lived there for a (too) short period and still frequently visit...discovering the regions made me fall in love with California wine. Since wine has a personal dimension to it, the nostalgic component and the memories and the knowledge of the areas make you certainly enjoy it more! Have been to quite a few regions: Sonoma (in particular Russian River Valley), Napa, Paso Robles, Anderson Valley (mendocino county), Central Coast/Santa Barbara region (Santa Ynez/Santa Maria valley), Santa Cruz mountains.... and I know I still have quite a few more to visit...dozens if not hundreds of producers to go back to!

San Luis Obispo and surrounding areas is incredible for wine. It’s so different due to multiple valleys and elevation changes. Never mind the coastal vineyards.

i live in sonoma. leaving my property i pass through vineyards immediately. i also see wild deer and turkeys on my property, and horses, goats, cows, and even llamas on my road. i love living here, having grown up in a cold north west european country this is like an eternal summer vacation. konstantin, you're welcome to stay if you're ever visiting sonoma or napa.

There's not really volcanic activity in California, but definitely lots of tectonic plate shifting! I've been to just about every wine region in California, but my favorite is the Central Coast AVA. That's the area from Santa Barbara to Monterey, and I love their wines. Another area I love is Sonoma Coast. In fact, wineries along the coast of California have Pinot Noirs of such purity that I feel if we had another "Judgment of Paris," those Pinots could compete admirably against some of the great Burgundies. They also have beautiful Chardonnays as well. So my favorite area in California is most things coastal. A little further inland, however, there are also beautiful Cabernets and Rhône varietals. Even as we speak, I am preparing for three more trips to California this year. I can't wait even though my credit card is already weeping!

My wife and I have travelled extensively in California and have enjoyed California wines from Santa Barbara in the south to Eureka in the North, our favourites seem to come mostly from the Napa & Sonoma regions.

We have been to Paso Robles , Edna Valley, Napa ,Sonoma Placerville , Lodi , Livermoore Valley, and Temecula , regions. Have some really great wines 90+ and some that are dogs. That is what is interesting about Ca wines. For quality stick to the Family owned and produced wines, for just everyday wine you can go to the big Corporate wineries, where they use a formula for making the wines year after year. Typically they are less bodied and interesting.

Hi Constantin, I’ve been enjoying the content, thank you. I’ve visited Staggs, Kenwood, a few others. I’ve decided to go for it on my own as a personal effort. Tonight was Labegorce Margaux, 2nd night. I’d like to ask a question. For my self education learning each bottle and location, my approach is to do a two night approach. First I use the gas device that pierces the cork with a needle. I pour a small amount to assess over 15 minutes of body color and smell. I then pour the normal glass, and then another later. 1/2 bottle. That is it for night one. Night two, cork off and decant to have the same experience of small pour for assessment, then 2n’d and 3rd to finish bottle. Each normal glass is 45 minutes , sometimes with appropriate food. Is this ridiculous? What is the best way to learn and develop taste of each bottle ideally? I keep a journal notation of each bottle profile. Thank you sir!

I live in the foothills of California and grow grapes in the Clements Hills sub AVA of the Lodi AVA. What is interesting to me is that Lodi does not get its due as a area that can grow superior grapes. We have the soil and the same diurnal temperatures as Napa. We run within two to three degrees F of St. Helena and develop better acids than there.

I really wanted to be a wine snob and stick with the Old world, but my palate just wouldn't let me...turns out I like ripe fruit! California has soooooo much to offer. Check out the El Dorado AVA when you get a chance. Cantiga Wineworks is a tour de force!

I've traveled to Napa valley a few times and always enjoy it. I find the Silverado Trail side of the valley best for me. Loads of beautiful places, people, food and wine. A recurring theme for most great wine areas I'm sure. Thirsty always.

Why do you don't talk about California being Mexico? and because in 1810 slavery was abolished( USA until 1865) many Americans slaves run to Mexico /California seeking refugee and freedom. All we're granted automatically freedom. Then because USA were losing their "property" started a war against Mexico where that territory was lost now California is, in 1848 but a land full, of course Mexicans. So they made the fairy tale of gold and 1849 the hostile population was up number but people from around the world. So for sure it had to be there mexican wine makers as well as the one in other states 1597 Casa Madero. Respect history ✌️
