Can you pronounce the Ohio towns of Tuscarawas or Gnadenhutten? What about Russia? Watch as these Californians try (and fail) to pronounce some of the most unique towns in Ohio. It's a blast!

I know of nobody who says "El ear yuh". Even on local TV, it is "El ear ee ah".

It's great how Russia, Versailles, and Houston (How-ston) are all within like 25 miles of each other. With Piqua and Wapakoneta not far away.

Grew up in Steubenville, Ohio. Lots of unusual names to the towns. A lot of the names are Native American words

Toledo, Lima, Elida and Wapakoneta are also fun to hear people mispronounce. 😉

I grew up in the village of Tuscarawas. We just all called it Tusky. Gnadenhutten is about 4-5 miles away and all us locals just shorten it to Gnaden. Yep. Grew up in the village of Tuscarawas near the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County!😂

They should have included Mantua.

You spelled one wrong in the capital lettered actual town names.....It's not Bellafontaine, it's Bellefontaine. The 5th letter is an E, not an A.

Probably pronounced it wrong (according to those who've lived there, anyway)

Should have thrown one of the Cuyahoga towns in there... Cuyahoga Falls, Cuyahoga Heights...

Tuscarawas isn't pronounced tuss-kuh-RAW-wuss, it's pronounced tuss-kuh-RAW-russ. You have to pronounce the r that isn't there.
@AltheaBooth-dq3cjАй бұрын
Depends on where in Ohio you are, I guess. Where I am (Stark County) I mostly hear it called tus-kah-RAW-wuss or tus-kah-RAW-wuhz.

I've seen the first one in writing but I only knew it as a river, I didn't realize it was a city. Should have. I've seen the second one too, I just have no idea where or when. I don't know why it surprised me that they had trouble with Chillicothe. Would have been funny if you threw Cuyahoga at them. I don't think there are any tricky pronunciations down in this little corner, biggest tissue we run into is people put in too many t's and not enough n's.

Milan (me-land), Vienna Vy-enna), Beallsville (Bells-ville), Bellaire (Blare), are also fun. But don't get me started on towns in Washington State...they're just as silly (Puyallup) or Oregon (Willamette).

Basically, it was places that had Indian or French names. Then, in the late 18th century and into the early 19th century, settlers from New England, who had odd accents to begin with and were not overly educated, tried to pronounce these places the best they could. That and they actually founded towns and gave them French names because they were veterans of the Revolutionary War and liked the French... but again, they didn't know how to pronounce them correctly. Later, German immigrants came and messed-up the pronunciations even worse.
