I learned ASL in high school and was pretty good at it. One of my best memories signing was surprising this deaf man at the mall. He was trying to raise awareness for the deaf and was handing out ASL alphabet pens and I started signing with him. He was so amazed and thankful a hearing person was signing with him. Only a few tables away a group of girls started mocking us by moving their hands around and trying to mimic us and staring at us. They were really rude making fun of us, but I’ll never forget making his day. Juan, if you’re reading this, thank you for signing slowly so I could keep up and thank you for not saying anything about my slow or incorrect signing.

As a deaf person myself, despite being deaf since birth I still don’t always appreciate how varied the hearing situation is for different deaf people. Well since they can't normally speak, or hear themselves speak, not only does sign language and body language play an important part, but obviously, so does facial expressions! Kinda like tone of voice. So being very expressive and kinda exaggerating helps emphasize on what they're saying. Sign language comes in different languages, so Asl is American sign language, there's British sign language, Irish sign language, and more. So it's not all the same.

Thank you for posting this video. I met and have had encounters with a number of deaf people in my lifetime. I have found them to be some of the most kind, considerate and well mannered people I have ever met. I once attended a stand-up comedy routine performed by a deaf person. It was during an ASL class. The audience was made up of deaf and hearing people. While the performer signed for those who were deaf, there was a voice coming over the speaker to interpret his signs, for those of us who are just beginning to learn sign language. It was quite the experience. The entire audience was laughing. It didn’t matter if you were deaf or hearing. We all enjoyed it. It was quite a memorable experience and one I’m glad that I had.

I have an internal voice because I can hear people's voices (though I can't understand them), and I speak English as well as ASL. Someone who's more significantly deaf than I am won't necessarily give the same answer. Like with a lot of the answers to the questions discussed here, it varies depending on whom you're talking to.

@Justin-zk8jq
@Justin-zk8jq 5 жыл бұрын
If they've always been completely deaf and could never hear then having an inner voice would be impossible since they were never exposed to a spoken language or sound in general. I think it might have been so the words are near their faces It's very important to not just get the word translation but also the tone from facial expressions because we can't really 'hear' sign language. A lot is expressed through a face's "non manual markers" which are important in communication, especially in sign language which is visual rather than auditory. So putting the subtitles at the top closer to their faces might be a way of getting us to see their expressions as we read the words.

@@averywallace6677 I want to add something to this! We discussed a bit about sign language interpreting in class this week and apparently an International Sign, short IS, does exist It's just not a fleshed out language, like there is no fixed grammar and no standard vocabulary and primarly used for simple conversations. It's rather a mixture of signs from a bunch of signs languages from all around the world, mainly western ones. It heavily relies on your mimic, gesture, and body language. Not everyone knows it though bc most don't have the chance to use it regularly. The non-existant standard vocabulary proves to be a hurdle as well, as it requires knowledge of at least one other expansive sign language, eg ASL. If someone knows ASL they will have an easier time with IS than eg someone who speaks Malaysian Sign Language where signs differ a lot from ASL

I suppose it depends when you lost your hearing and whether you are completely deaf or just partially - my mate lost their hearing completely as an adult and he thinks in English not bsl (I think if you lost your hearing at a young age or youre born deaf then youd automatically think in sign language as that's the language you've learnt from a very young age)

To deaf people with tinnitus, they do. "Ringing" in the ear doesn't always sound like ringing. Some deaf people have tinnitus and some don't, and then some with tinnitus only have ringing type, some only have other types, and some have a mix of two or more types. I'm hearing, but I have an inner ear disorder in which I'm slowly losing my hearing, and tinnitus is a huge part of that disorder, but my tinnitus is only ringing type about half the time it occurs.

Okay these two are adorable I learned sign language because of two reasons 1. I was a daycare infant teacher and wanted to communicate with the babies better and it was very effective I recommend it for any parent with young children or babies it made life for the babies so much easier 2.I perfected signing for a crush he was so darn cute and the sweetest thing ever I remember sitting by him and he never said a thing no one else was deaf like him so he felt out of place I already knew basic signing and he was elated that someone his age knew something about his way of communicating besides the teachers. We were great friends we went out every weekend to go to the movies or skating or the game arcade. He was awesome so sad he moved he could've been my future husband that I met from high school lol

Water Poptart ASL is an language that relies on more than just fingers. Things like speed and rate of signs, shoulder shifting, facial expressions, palm orientation, among a wide other variety are all crucial parts of asl. Loud spaces, distances. Plus when I was working in fast food having deaf customers come in and my being able to talk to them without a pen was wonderful.
