It has GOT to be a better plan that my current strawberries in the straw bales... slugs just love them! I will post a pic when I get it made and going. I am wondering if I should just transplant my strawberries from the straw bales? The garden shop doesn't have much left in the strawberry section (getting too hot here in NorCal I think).

What’s the cycle for strawberries from start to finish
@leftmarginnotedpm70628 жыл бұрын
OMG. You must have read my mind on this. I was trying to figure out what i was going to do with all of my strawberry starts (went overboard with planting seeds and have like 100% germination!). It also has me thinking on my other berry starts (blackberry and raspberry) and since they are in crates, they can be moved indoor for those of us who have harsh winters. Totally great. Thanks.

"Organics Best" Urban Gardner Its not working out for us. I don't like how I have to move them to get sun on the other side. Also the watering of them is inconsistent. You have to soak it so much to get to the bottom ones. We are going to make a raised bed to put them in this fall.

I need to thank you. I stumbled upon strawberry towers on the internet and all the ones I saw were out of pvc and they're like 22 bucks a pipe so then I had an idea to just make pipes out of papercrete and chicken wire. Now I can do it cheaper and I dont have to do extra work.
@CaliKim299 жыл бұрын
daniel wallengren Hi Daniel - so glad you found these here - you will LOVE them! They are easy to build and care for and are growing so much better than the strawberries I planted in ground! They love the loose soil. If you can get milk crates for free somewhere, even better! Let me know how it goes and thx so much for watching!

Hi Kim and CG, yeah, ground space is certainly at a premium.I just got back into growing strawberries but again I'm doing it at ground level. I forgot about netting against birds in my present design. Birds will destroy your berries that you worked so hard to nurture. Netting is a must. My next bed design will I hope include all those factors ( size, netting, ground space, and ect. Good luck with this project and keep us informed. TY.

I built one. I bought collapsable crates not milk so I can empty and store the crates for another time.. Bit more expensive bit that is fine. I also used your tube "irrigation" system ideal. And as I said below, on a previous post, I used hot glue gun to stick the lining in.. Quick easier and tidier than sticky tape.. I also bought stawberry soil mix from the local garden centre for my crates. This is specially formulated for strawberries with suitable additives, fertiliser etc. already in it.. It also has slow release fertilizer which should also be great.. Overall mine cost more than NZ$20 but that was my choice for the products and crates I used. It is now winter, but almost spring, here in New Zealand so I only just built mine.. Will see how it goes..

Watering will be an issue as strawberry plants need moisture (but at the same time be free flowing and not be too soggy) otherwise the root plants will die. It would have been better if you mixed the soil with 30% perlite, as this will help with drainage. It would have been easier to put the soil to the level of the planting hole. then thread the bare root plant through the hole (inside out) in that way you can spread the roots about. You can then continue to soil up until all the plants are planted. I would also put a perforated tube at the centre of the box in all three level for two reasons. Firstly this will insure that all three layers will be watered (no dry spots) and secondly you can put a pole in it , which can be used to attach a net over the whole boxes it ( so that birds will not eat them)

Angela Angell Perfect! So glad it will work for you and that you have access to the crates. I had a hard time finding them. Seems like Californians don't use cattle panels much or crates. Grocery stores charge for them and no other stores had them and now I noticed amazon has doubled the price that I paid a few weeks ago for them! Post a pic on First Garden once you have yours built!
@angelaangell85239 жыл бұрын
Walmarts had a bunch on sale last winter I think it was. I think I got them for $3. I bought a bunch and have then stacked against walls holding my dvd collection and in my laundry room holding food storage. I use them for a lot of things. One holds my shoes when I come in and I just toss my shoes in it that I wear often so I don't track anything in. They are handy in kids rooms to use like shelving to put their things in, books, etc as they interlock even sideways. Since all mine are in use I will check around for a few more to use on this project. But I sure love the idea & will do it soon.
@CaliKim299 жыл бұрын
Angela Angell you are fortunate to have them, sound like they come in handy for you! I think our stores carry them more at the end of the summer for college dorm room organizing etc. Will have to pick up bunch then. Good luck with your tower! Post pics on First Garden when you have it done!

I love your first garden series. As a beginner it has been a lot of help. Would you consider doing how you use Epsom salts and neem oil sprays in your garden? I think that would be something very important for beginners to learn and know about especially if it's a first time dealing with possible diseases, or bugs.
@CaliKim299 жыл бұрын
Lily B So glad you are enjoying the series and it has been helpful. I do actually have several videos on Epsom Salts, here are a few: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYSVZnVoj8iohZI, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZSVmaibbNl-mJo, and Neem Oil: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o522lKiFg65_hqs. I am also trying a new type of Neem Oil that is cold pressed, very pure and has azadirachtin which helps with the soft bodied insect control. I got it from Gary Pilarchik (check out his YT channel and website) and plan to do a video on it very soon. Thx for watching!

@emeralddragon20109 жыл бұрын
you are lovely and it's a great idea. one suggestion though would be to poke a few small holes in the bottom of the landscape fabric to help the water reach the bottom. I know the fabric does permit the water to slowly soak thru but you don't want the the bottom ones to be water starved or the upper ones to sit in a puddle of water while it waits to soak thru

If you live near a distillery a second hand whiskey or bourbon barrel would look more rustic. Holes would need to be drilled around the barrel and some form of drainage (rolled up chicken wire or plastic fencing filled with stones) down the center. The second hand barrel lasts many years, but not as long as plastic.Allow room at the top of the barrel to add new compost, as its hard work to completely change the soil in the barrel.

I am in south FL.. I want to grow some for my dad who puts them on his cereal every day. I am a master gardener but do not eat or grow these. For fathers day I thought finally. a gift. how about 1 crate on legs or something? I put outside skins of one of his from the grocery in the freezer to get seeds and scarify them. If these are hybryds they may not sprout. I think I should just get a few plants at a store meanwhile. I like the crate idea as it keeps more pests off of them than if in the ground, but it would be ok to let them spread in a garden area.. I just dont want pests in them. Thank you for giving me ideas.

Kim, this is a great idea and for under 20 bucks.... at my local nursery for strawberries they have a wood pallet with two 1 cu.ft. cheap potting soil bags slid down inside the pallets and they were on sale for only 75.00 .... what??? a free pallet and 3 bucks of cheap dirt... C.G. I hope the eagle camera was water proof.....

I know this is an old post. Great video. I watch most of the ones you post. However, on this one you did not mention watering.

What a great and inexpensive idea. Growing vertically with a small footprint, and what a way to re-purpose my milk cartons that have been in the attic for ages. I also noticed the stone retaining wall behind you. Do you have a video on that? They are beautiful and I was wondering if you could share how you built those. Do you have rebar or cement reinforcement? I'm looking to create a stone wall planter beside my patio and saw these and think they would be perfect. How do you like them? Would you do anything different were you to do it all over again? Thank you.
