I have so many tips that I don't even know where to begin! 🤣 I think today since you spent a lot of time on it I'll talk about seeds... 1. Pea and bean seeds. Instead of buying those tiny packs of seeds for a couple bucks you can just buy a regular bag of dried blackeyed peas, mung beans, red beans, garbanzo beans etc. in the grocery store for a fraction of the cost and plant those or use them for sprouted microgreens or beansprouts. 2. Plant the seeds out of your food. If you like the taste of a tomato, squash, pumpkin, watermelon etc. just plant those and see if they grow and produce well. They might be hybrids so might not run true to type...but at least it was free! 3. Save the seeds from the produce of your own garden. They have been proven to grow in your own perfect little microclimate and will now be perfectly tailored to your area. 4. Buy one sweet potato, grow it forever. That is how I started my patch. Bury half of it lengthways in a container of soil and it will produce slips. Pick those off and bury them lengthways (which produces much more than burying them upright). The vines will then grow and become fairly unmanageable. Everytime you trim those vines, those can become new slips. They also are really tasty stir fried with garlic and ginger + pinch of salt and pinch of sugar so for me they do double duty. 😊 5. Regrow your kitchen scraps. I've found the most reliable to be spring onions/scallions and chadon beni/culantro but other herbs like celery can work as well. Cut off the bottom 2 inches where the roots would be, stick it in some soil, water it, and watch it regrow. Cut and come again until it gives up the ghost. 😆

Welcome aboard !! I do my best to answer within 3 days - It's not right for content creators to ask for video views, follows and comments....and not give back to the very people that you just asked the world of. In case you did not know: I LiveStream every Monday, 12pm PT. . Gardeners arrive at 11:30am and chat with each other, and me, and have developed neat friendships and camaraderie with each other over the years. Those who can't make the Lives, watch the replay as they do chores, what not. Additionally, during the livestream I also have teams from SmartPot Fabric Containers and Monterey Lawn Garden growth/pest control, on hand, so that you can chat with them, ask questions, etc., as well. -I am on Instagram/FB, as well. -Parooze my website/blog if anything to see the vast resources available. Whew! That was a lot of info. Be sure to say hello if are on the live! Last, tell me where you are gardening from and what you are/will be growing? Welcome friend, CaliKim

I started keeping my peppers 2 years ago so this past summer was my 3rd summer of production. I am in Connecticut and Vermont. I just keep my eggplants and peppers in pots and they love it. This is my first year keeping eggplants. Love it! And it’s so fun to get peppers starting end in May. I didn’t know that eggplants are also perennials and started researching this topic because I realized that my eggplants which by now (end of November) are indoors are still growing and that’s how I found your video. Thank you!

Quick question I’m new to indoor tomato growing. We live in a camper meaning we can’t have high humidity. My question is would 40-50% humidity allow me to fully grow the tomato plants?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 21 сағат бұрын
Exciting! This will not be a problem! But I definitely recommend growing dwarf or mini varieties like, Tiny Tim from my Indoor garden seed collection (calikimgardenandhome.com) The reason being..the full size varieties are too cumbersome to manage indoors. In case you didn't know, I carry these in my seed shop in my "Indoor Garden" collection, on sale now on my website. Sounds like a neat set up in the camper! Hope this helps! Kim

Had I known this was going to be an unusually warm fall season, I could have planted pea seeds in early September. Too late now. While the reeds can survive a frost, the flowers and pea pods won't. Frost is in the forecast for tonight, tomorrow, and next week. It is about time! I need a good frost to kill off some pesky garden bugs. In preparation for the freezing temperatures, I made a final pepper harvest this morning, cut the plants at soil level, and added them to my compost bins. Sylacauga, Al zone 7A.

Sounds like you’ve been busy wrapping up the season! It’s always a bit of a guessing game with the weather, isn’t it? But it sounds like you’ve made the most of this warm fall. A good frost can definitely help with those pesky bugs, and it’s great you got a final pepper harvest in before the freeze. Composting the plants is such a smart way to give back to the garden. Here’s to a restful winter and a fantastic growing season next year, Jay! CK

In my WI garden I stick a bunch of pea seeds throughout my beds in the fall, It gives me an indication which beds are ready to start planting other seeds out in the garden in the spring, believe me, they are not all the same. Have a nice weekend. Stay Well !!!

That’s such a clever way to test your soil and kick off the growing season! Peas are such a hardy and rewarding crop to start with, too. I tried this method and it has been over a week and still no signs of roots. What am I doing wrong?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Күн бұрын
Thanks for giving it a try! Don’t worry-basil can sometimes take a little longer to root, especially if the conditions aren’t just right. Make sure your cuttings are in a bright, warm spot but out of direct sunlight, as too much heat can stress them. Also, check that you’re using fresh, room-temperature water and change it every few days to keep it oxygenated. Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle just below a node (the little bump where leaves grow) and remove any leaves that might be submerged, as they can cause the water to become murky. Hang in there-roots should start appearing soon! CK

Tulle is definitely a garden saver. I had a nightmare of a time with grasshoppers this year and while the all purpose flour kept them at bay, everytime I rinsed the leaves they'd be back. Then something else started munching on my scallions and pakchoi at night. Aaagh! Tulle to the rescue. I have black tulle over my black grow bags cut to size and tucked under the 'lip' (I always roll my grow bags down at least one tick so the handles don't show), as well as draped over my raised beds and weighted down with rocks, and the black is practically invisible. Light and water can still get through and problem solved. Everything is happily growing away now and completely unbothered. Definitely recommend!
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Күн бұрын
Wow, what a creative solution! Tulle is such an underrated garden tool, and your setup sounds so smart! I love how you used the black tulle-it must blend beautifully and keep everything protected without sacrificing light or water. Those grasshoppers and night munchers didn’t stand a chance! Thanks for sharing this tip; it’s inspiring to see how resourceful gardeners can be. Glad to hear your scallions and pak choi are thriving now! CK

I've been making a conscious effort to keep at least one if not multiple jars at a time sprouting seeds inside : Alfalfa or Clover and/or Mung Bean sprouts. The nice thing about these are that they grow inside without grow lights and without soil! All you need is a jar and fresh water to rinse the the seeds every day until they fully sprout. I use 64 oz Mason Jars with some sort of mesh screen at the end to allow them to drain. Another HUGE benefit is that it turns out that the sprout of a vegetable is 100x ,give or take, more nutritious than the fully grown vegetable planted in soil. Broccoli sprouts and Radish sprouts come to mind. Plus they are SO much easier to grow and are ready in days!

“That’s such a fantastic tip! Sprouting seeds is such an affordable and space-saving way to grow fresh, nutritious food indoors. I love how simple it is-just a jar, water, and a little care, and you’ve got a superfood in days! Broccoli and radish sprouts are amazing for their flavor and health benefits. Thanks for sharing your method-this is an awesome reminder that gardening doesn’t always need soil or fancy equipment!” CK

@@CaliKim29 You should sell them and give the other guys who sell them some competition. It would be great if people could buy different ones in smaller amounts along the lines of the way you do your "seed collections" but of course there would be a lot more seeds needed. I use a couple tablespoons for each batch. I start out in na small jar and move them to a 64 oz jar.. Right now I'm using up Mung Bean sprout seeds from a few years ago as well as Clover sprouts which are yummy.

I understand this was over five years ago when this was made, but a wise old nursery worker once told me to avoid all of the plastic containers that you get from nurseries and big box stores that plants come in as their only meant for temporary use. Supposedly they leech chemicals. I don’t know if that’s true, but can vouch for a difference in plant health. Anything that I have switched from plastic containers to Clay pot have done much better indoors. Just something to look into

@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 3 күн бұрын
Glad you liked. We had fun filming. Tatsoi plants should be spaced about 6-8 inches apart in rows that are 10-12 inches apart. This spacing allows the plants to form their characteristic compact rosettes and ensures good air circulation, which helps prevent disease. If you’re harvesting baby tatsoi leaves, you can plant them closer together, about 4 inches apart, since they won’t need as much room to mature.

Hello Kim! I always learn something new when I watch your videos. I did cut some orange mint and sage to see if I could get it to root. I do plan on starting more herbs from your collection. It does make it a lot easier to have the collections and just go to town growing. I just bought a manual herb grinder and I'm so excited to use it with my meals. Thank you and take care!
