1. Don’t use soil from your garden: buy potting plant mix 2. Don’t plant your seeds too deep 3. Label your seeds 4. Not enough or too much water 5. Not enough overhead light. Get a grow light for indoors. 6. Don’t give up!

Put a coffee filter in the pot before you fill it with seed starting mix. When you water, the filter will allow the water to drain as well as prevent soil from washing out of the pot's drainage holes.

I grew pepper seedlings from the seeds inside a bell pepper and I put them in garden soil in the container you get mushrooms in when you buy them from the store. I kept that in my greenhouse and they are gorgeous. A beautiful green and doing so well.

To help your seedlings grow stronger, be better prepared for transplanting and to cut back on acclimating time place a small aucilating fan on low to blow slightly on your seedlings as they grow.

I use regular outside dirt to start my seeding. They grow fine. I live at Buffalo NY. I use grow lights. I also use my goldfish tank water to fertilize my plants.

Hi Kim. I have pepper seedlings already well along the way. I planted my tomatoes today. All are heirloom varieties. I am experimenting to see which heirlooms will do well in Louisiana zone 8. Last year some the heirlooms I grew did better than the hybrids. I have never enjoyed gardening more that when I began starting my own seeds. It opens a huge world of possibilities as to which varieties you can grow, instead of depending on the big nurseries who stock the stores with only a few varieties. I'm above you in NW corner of Louisiana. I grew Rutgers Tomatoes last year and even with the drought, they did fairly well compared to others. Word of advice. Start raising your own worms for worm castings. Easy to do and pays off big time.

I’m in Pittsburgh and just started about 12 varieties of peppers yesterday along with 8 slicer tomato varieties. I know I’ll have to transplant again before planting out in the garden but I am experimenting to see how much earlier I can get a harvest if I’m willing to do a little extra work in the spring. I don’t want to wait until August for tomatoes and peppers so we’ll see how this goes. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very informative video as always.

If you plant them outside early and a frost gets forecast, cover them with a 3 gallon black container as the temperature dips below freezing. You often get those black container for free at nurseries. Some may have a low charge for used containers. But they will maintain heat around the plant. Add plastic tape over the weep holes if necessary to hold the heat in.

We are in North Central Colorado and still have between 12 - 14 weeks before we can plant our gardens here. We have even been known to have one last snowfall on June 1st. So it will be at least another six weeks before we will be starting our seeds in the house. My problem is that we are moving in mid-May to Central Ohio and their season is so different than ours is here. My husband has gone ahead to start his new job and get us a home and will be far to busy to get our garden set up. We have pretty much decided that I may go ahead and start some of our cold weather crops here (especially lettuce) and at some point fly there and begin the gardening there. It is going to be madness at first, but I am determined to have my garden this year. I really need to can a ton of tomato products and we are down to our last two jars of green beans. Not to mention all of our pepper products have been used up for weeks now. So unless I want to spend a ton of money at Farmers Markets this year (which isn't an option) I really need to get my garden planted on time. I imagine I will need a lot of prayers this time around... Happy Gardening and Harvesting everyone.

This made me so excited to start but it’s a bit too early for my zone. However I have a plan written out and I can get my supplies together now! Gardening isn't that hard! You can do it! Gives you a new appreciation for farmers. Tomatoes, peppers and beans are the easiest of all! Just give tomatoes room to grow and make sure beans can climb unless they are a bush habit. You might also like Rainbow Gardens on KZbin she is great

LABELS!!!! Lol great tip. I have found myself getting lost in the zen of planting seeds and forgetting this step on many occasions! Also about seeds sowing depth. I have found it doesn't seem to matter. Yes, you don't want to put them at the very bottom, but I just sow everything half inch deep, with few exceptions. Never had germination issues.

Another good reason for starting seeds indoors is that, often, it takes more heat for seeds to sprout than it takes the resulting plant to grow! I made the mistake of using garden soil my first try (last year) because I didn't want to buy soil that was shipped from who-knows-where ville. Hopefully I can learn to make seed starting mix from material I can get either myself or from local producers.

I've already started some seeds and learned a few mistakes I made but I think I can overcome them. Here in southern AZ the weather has been colder and more cloudy than usual so I've had to hold off putting in cool weather seeds. Great tips for me to follow. Potting Mix: $12 = 20 quarts. Peat pellets (I don't use them) $13 = 50 pellets. Seeds: $1.20-$3 per packet. LIGHTS to improve sturdiness: $18-$80+ /vs my local nursery, 4-packs = $1.60 apiece. It's not about the cost, it's about the THRILL OF IT ALL. Priceless! Great advice Kim.

I've always noticed that plants I start from seed are much healthier and produce much better than puchased plants. This year I will be starting almost all my stuff from seed. Here in the Northeast we have a store called Ocean State Job Lot. I picked up two LED shop lights that put out 4300 lumens. Best part? $15 a piece! Winning! I always use fine compost amended garden soil because it doesn't dry out so easy and is less algae prone. I gave up on those overpriced peat pellets, and they also can stunt root growth if you don't remove that netting when transplanting. I also reuse nursery packs and containers for as long as they last. The world has a big plastic waste problem that we can't ignore. Peat bogs aren't in infinite supply either from what I have heard. Local and free works for me.

Thank you for this jnformation. I've just transferred 5 sugar snap peas into a larger tub after growing them from saving last years seeds from a 2 plants my daughter gave me last year. I wont be putting them outside for a few days yet though, as I want to establish them in the new tub, and the weather is not warm enough and we've had strong winds today. I put beans out last week after transplanting 5 of them, we had a few days of hot weather, then strong winds a day or so after, 2 leaves burned and 3 were left, but there's some hope as there are 2 new shoots coming, but its chilly outside. I live in the northern hemisphere and the weather is so unpredictable right now. I'll have some tomato plants to transplant in a few weeks though, fingers crossed. The sound quality on this video is incredibly good. It sounds like you're wearing a lavalier microphone (lapel mic) but I don't see one on your blouse. Either it's hidden really well, or you had some pro-quality audio equipment there next to the camera as you shot this. Usually on KZbin, you see amateurs making videos and the sound quality is quite often the last thing they ever figure out how to get right. This video stands head and shoulders above most for sound quality, that's for sure! Can you let me in on how you achieved that?

Please don't use peat pellets if you can avoid it - coconut coir provides much of the same benefits while being a renewable resource. Peat *isn't* renewable and collecting it destroys bog ecosystems that rely on it for filtering the water. It takes over a hundred years for the sphagnum moss to build up and decomp into peat, coir gets replaced often because it actually breaks down in your soil and if you're like me with heavy clay soil in Texas, it can seriously help combat against compaction and drainage issues.

I use a coffee filter at the bottom and mix freshly used (but cooled off) coffee grounds. It pre-moistens the soil and also aerates it. I have found that used tea leaves (dried and ground up) mixed into the soil provides extra health to the plants.

I'm starting radishes, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and zuchini today! Using transplant pots, egg crate, and misc. jars. (I priced containers and pods at the store, but I decided I'd just get creative with odds and ends at home.) ?What about the method of starting seeds inside a flattened, moist papertowel (kept warm)? ?Can you bake bread in that clay fireplace behind you - maybe on a low flame?

Kiaora..a small tip ...you can use the sprouted pea or bean combo or alfalfa sprouts from the salad section of the supermarket to get a head start they grow fast and easy.....

great job this is really a great idea been doing it for years if you go out in spring and buy a plant a pepper plant might cost you five bucks so think about $5 versus a penny it's a heck of a deal we all need to think about growing food. times are going to get harder food will become more scarce we should all be prepared and start doing just like this beautiful lady said grow from seed save a lot of money learn how to grow food very important for the future

Hey Kim, i started my tomato’s indoors in peat pellets the same day you posted the salsa garden video and mine haven’t sprouted. I water them and bring them out every day to get the sun because I don’t have a grow light and bring them back in for the night. Any idea why they haven’t sprouted. ?

RIGO BARRON I’ve been starting seeds indoors for a couple of years now and have a couple of thoughts. First don’t worry if your seeds fail to germinate. It happens! Soil temperature is very important to the seeds. It should be in the mid 70’s. Tomatoes are a tender warm season crop. To survive outside they won’t germinate until the soil is warm. So keep them indoors until they germinate. Light becomes important as soon as they germinate. Once up, tomatoes will tolerate temperatures in the 60’s. Lower than that stresses them. Also right now if you’re in the USA your plants aren’t getting enough light. I’d guess we are getting 11 hours or less of daylight depending on where you live. Kim refers to her grow light videos in the salsa video. Watch them. She has some really inexpensive options for a grow light. The advice is great too. Hope that helps.

Thanks to videos like this, I have been having (what I consider to be) lots of success on my first seeds. Planted green beans, cucumbers, green bell peppers, and habaneros. About half of the green bean seeds I started didn’t make it (I’m about 2 weeks in), but I have a ton of cucumber plants, and my peppers are doing better than expected. I’m growing them in my basement (where it’s usually about 60°) and I believe that heat mat is what’s really making the difference! Thanks, Kim! 🇺🇸

I actually use newspapers or paper bags to make mine. I roll them around those small tomato paste cans. I start everything in them and IFF I need to "transplant" into a bigger pot I make some that are larger using a whole peeled tomato can. Think they are 6oz and 28oz. I have never had an issue with transplant stress doing this. I have tried TP and paper towel rolls but they seem to take long to break down for me. I usually have to tear the bottom away but they do work in a pinch.

I started seeds a month ago (my peppers and other seeds that needed an early start with a heat mat), got fast germination, then they've just sat there, doing nothing, though they're being watered and lights on for 18 hours a day. No true leaves, just the cotelydons (aka baby leaves). But as I watched your vid, it occurred to me that my lights might be old & who knows what kind I bought way back when?! So I ran to Home Depot and bought new ones, in accordance with the lumens & Kelvin numbers you gave, and now I'm hoping they'll make up for lost time. Thank you SO much! I am in Missouri, Branson. I bought buttercrunch lettuce, Pak choy, parsley, lettuce and kaleidoscope carrots because they look eastery and fun, and broccoli. I want to grow microgreens year round and tomatoes. I am going to do container gardenning since Missouri mostly grows rocks.

It's also very easy to seed lettuce and most cold weather crops out directly, as lettuce and peas, etc, don't really like being transplanted much...I live in Vermont, and often plant these things in April, have baby lettuce to eat in a month. And arugula! Yum!

Hi Kim, your tips are spot on as always. I have an analogy that I tell people when they ask me how to start their own seeds. I say, "Nurture twice daily, at least". If they seem confused at that, I say, Well, if you had a newborn baby, you wouldn't just put it in a corner and come back in three days to see how it's doing. Your plants need daily attention! Twice daily, just to check on moisture, too close or too far from the light, etc.
