@@kenth151 The rust is only superficial. The structure of this ship is actually sound. The reason for the disposal is a due to court order over unpaid docking fees. I sailed on this ship as a boy in 1961. One of my most memorable events of my life! My heart hurts, and part of me dies too with what's happening to this great liner. But I've accepted the idea of sinking her as a reef. I think this will be a dignified 'burial' for her. Part of me will be buried along with her! But her memory and Legend will live on better this way, especially with the seaside museum letting her Legacy live on. I am expecting (& hoping) for great publicity, worldwide, with her final internment... and more reports of her glory than she has recieved in over 70 years. Because at the time for the Queen Mary, it seemed like a good idea since it hasn't been attempted before. But ever since her conversion into a floating hotel, she has been very difficult to operate and maintain over the years. Not enough rooms being used and overmounting maintmence costs are the key reasons why she hasn't been very profitable. I think she's an example to other companies that there was a high chance the United States wouldn't have a good return on investment either.
@MarkNystrom-ok6wi
@MarkNystrom-ok6wi 2 ай бұрын
There is also an additional issue, The queen mary was literally sailed into a long beach, Her engines were turned off, and she had sat At that pier ever since... She was basically delivered fully complete to the city of long beach. The SS United States, on the other hand, has been completely gutted as of the 80s. The conservancy couldn't be bothered to give her a new paint job... Which to people who are not maritime experts, told them that the ship was not being maintained and that it could sink at the pier at any moment. The price tag needed to restore the ship to museum condition is probably the better part of one billion dollars.... If you don't have a plan to guarantee return on investment, No Rich person is going to give you that money, And politicians, who are not maritime experts, are not going to give one billion dollars to this giant rusting hunk of metal That looks like it's going to sink if you move it. In other words, the conservancy, well well intended was committed to a Fools errand. Itted to a fool's errand

@@crow_scripts You're literally just lying. The Queen Mary is IMMENSELY profitable, especially after Long Beach took direct control of her. The REAL reason is the Queen Mary doesn't need to pay docking costs like the SS United States, so that money goes DIRECTLY to renovation.

United States is now going to be towed down to the docks in Mobile, and it is here that she will undergo her final take down to rid her of anything that might be toxic to marine life. How nice that we are thinking of the marine life in the Gulf for a change. It is my understanding that her sinking off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach Florida, will create the largest manmade reef in the world. The marine life will indeed love her, as will all the scuba divers that will be exploring her. RIP, proud lady... Chuck

Neither of them knew what they were doing but some photos came out well, others are requiring all my editing skills to make them viewable. Included are photos on deck and looking from the decks and others taken from the Empire State building later the day we disembarked. I can't believe it. It can't be that one of the most iconic and important ships in maritime history ended up becoming a reef/refuge for corals. I can't believe that instead of turning it into a hotel or museum ship as was the case with the Queen Mary, they ended up turning it into a refuge for corals with its remains under water. For that they would have had to have used something else instead of one of the fastest ships in history that ended up breaking the record on its maiden voyage. The truth is that its fate is disappointing and I hope that at least the remains look like they were before being torn apart.

I know it's not happened yet, but to see how this once magnificent ship will die is nothing short of heartbreaking. Like many others, I'd wished for years she could've been rehabbed and put back to sea again, but the cost of doing as such equaled the cost of a brand new modern ship. I'm sure it'll be televised when the day of her burial comes, and like many others, I'll probably shed more a few tears for what might have been, but at least she won't die a piece at a time under the scrapper's torch.

The ship was 170 feet from keel to the top of the funnels. That is deeper than the water in which it was scuttled. So, the funnels would have been a navigational hazard and be sticking up above the water line.

I have a feeling if they do turn it into an artificial reef, it'll quickly disintegrate and collapse, or just fall apart upon landing on the bottom. Furthermore, y'all saved the Queen Mary, a british ocean liner, but I thought y'all are America? That ship could be saved with all the money we keep handing over to the military and Ukraine! I know that ship will fall apart after being made into a reef or alternatively could break if they don't sink it right Boycott Okaloosa and the conservancy group!

She's in a very sorry state, it would cost millions to put her in a condition to sail again, why not spend that amount on a new ship , ? , as regards the present ship she could be giving new life and living on ? ❤️🇺🇲

The asbestos stripping was the beginning of her demise, they ripped EVERYTHING out, not just the asbestos, they gutted her like a fish. At that point restoring her was out of anyone's price range.

In the end this fate is still acceptable cuz she ain't gone and even helps the enviroment. Plus she isn't scrapped at least and still accessable for everyone who loves diving. People will always find something negative to say. If she was left in her pier, they’d say “why not convert her into a museum”. If ahe was converted into a museum, they’d say “why not turn her into a functional ocean liner again?” People can be so negative that they forego all logic. There’s not much wr can do to save the ship by now. I’d much rather she rest in peace on the sea floor than be broken up for scrap metal.

It’s also indicative of our disrespect for our own ground breaking technology. But, then again, had Norwegian Cruise lines not reneged on their commitment to redeploy the ship, it would have had a brighter future. This is a sad day for American technology.

Asbestos is what killed this great ship. If it had not needed to be gutted in the 1990’s, there would have been more left for investors to save. Gibbs was so obsessed with making his ship fire-proof, though. And they didn’t know how dangerous asbestos was back in the 1950’s.

A sad, sad end. I think we ALL hoped for a miracle, but pragmatism said it just wouldn't be so. While I'm heartbroken and mourn her passing, I am at least slightly comforted knowing she will still exist in some form close to what she was, and not some forgotten pile of torn-apart remains of scrap metal on a beach at Alang.. Like the TITANIC, now she will outlast ALL of us, but, unlike the wreck, she will be far more accessible, will be preserved and protected, and those that follow us will be able to look at her and marvel. R.I.P. S.S. UNITED STATES 1952 - 2024. And 2024 - ??? You leave us now, but remain in another form. Let us hope you fare far better in your afterlife.

It's a bummer... SS USA TECHNICALLY would have been a good Museum Hotel Ship & an Iconic Symbol of the US. Her best location should be Permanently Docked near Washington DC, probably somewhere alongside the Potomac River & would have serve as an iconic symbol of the USA, especially if she is permanently docked near Washington DC, the US Capital.

It really distresses me that they're removing her stacks. But, nothing I can do. Hopefully, that's the WORST thing that happens. ALSO don't like (is this the ACTUAL plan?) the way they plan to submerge her: the science is advanced enough today to sink her on an even keel. Why have her go down at an angle like this? Doing this risks damage to her hull when she "impacts" the bottom. Unless there's a lot of soft sand under her keel, the keel at the bow WILL be damaged by this method. What >>> I

If you want to see what she'll look like in a few decades just look at the current state of the Andrea Doria wreck. They won't do anything to keep it from rotting away, that's nearly impossible in salt water and would be way too costly even if it was possible. In a hundred years she'll be gone and nobody will remember her. If anyone is still alive on Earth by then anyway. Sad but that's the truth.
