Because at the time for the Queen Mary, it seemed like a good idea since it hasn't been attempted before. But ever since her conversion into a floating hotel, she has been very difficult to operate and maintain over the years. Not enough rooms being used and overmounting maintmence costs are the key reasons why she hasn't been very profitable. I think she's an example to other companies that there was a high chance the United States wouldn't have a good return on investment either.
@MarkNystrom-ok6wi2 ай бұрын
There is also an additional issue, The queen mary was literally sailed into a long beach, Her engines were turned off, and she had sat At that pier ever since... She was basically delivered fully complete to the city of long beach. The SS United States, on the other hand, has been completely gutted as of the 80s. The conservancy couldn't be bothered to give her a new paint job... Which to people who are not maritime experts, told them that the ship was not being maintained and that it could sink at the pier at any moment. The price tag needed to restore the ship to museum condition is probably the better part of one billion dollars.... If you don't have a plan to guarantee return on investment, No Rich person is going to give you that money, And politicians, who are not maritime experts, are not going to give one billion dollars to this giant rusting hunk of metal That looks like it's going to sink if you move it. In other words, the conservancy, well well intended was committed to a Fools errand. Itted to a fool's errand

@@lukthelukiamluk EXACTLY! Exactly my dude and you know what? I'll screenshot this cuz ya hit the nail in the middle of the head! Even as an artificial reef she's still technically preserved to a certain degree. Yeah it sucks to end like this for a liner, but that's life AND she actually helps the enviroment wich I appreciate a tonne.Shall I make a song about this?

Beautiful CG animation but sad. It's as if that ship knows she's going to her grave.

It’s also indicative of our disrespect for our own ground breaking technology. But, then again, had Norwegian Cruise lines not reneged on their commitment to redeploy the ship, it would have had a brighter future. This is a sad day for American technology.

The SSUS was remarkable. 70+ years ago.

The cruise ship plan was awful though. They were going to build a fat accommodation block atop the superstructure, making the funnels stubby and short and totally ruining her sleek 1950s low profile.

Asbestos is what killed this great ship. If it had not needed to be gutted in the 1990’s, there would have been more left for investors to save. Gibbs was so obsessed with making his ship fire-proof, though. And they didn’t know how dangerous asbestos was back in the 1950’s.

A sad, sad end. I think we ALL hoped for a miracle, but pragmatism said it just wouldn't be so. While I'm heartbroken and mourn her passing, I am at least slightly comforted knowing she will still exist in some form close to what she was, and not some forgotten pile of torn-apart remains of scrap metal on a beach at Alang.. Like the TITANIC, now she will outlast ALL of us, but, unlike the wreck, she will be far more accessible, will be preserved and protected, and those that follow us will be able to look at her and marvel. R.I.P. S.S. UNITED STATES 1952 - 2024. And 2024 - ??? You leave us now, but remain in another form. Let us hope you fare far better in your afterlife.

@@jamesholton2630 Her engines were not removed. The propellers were taken off, but the propulsion machinery , including boilers, turbines and gear boxes, are all still in place. There was never any reason to go to all the expense of removing them.
@jdslyman17202 ай бұрын
@paulkirkland3263 It's the opposite of the Queen Mary in a way. SSUS had her interiors removed, but the heavy machinery was left in place, while the Queen Mary had her boilers and one of the engine rooms removed, while keeping her interior mostly.

How can America as a country allow this to happen. We've got nothing to be proud of and we're going to sink it. Shame on you

It's a bummer... SS USA TECHNICALLY would have been a good Museum Hotel Ship & an Iconic Symbol of the US. Her best location should be Permanently Docked near Washington DC, probably somewhere alongside the Potomac River & would have serve as an iconic symbol of the USA, especially if she is permanently docked near Washington DC, the US Capital.

It really distresses me that they're removing her stacks. But, nothing I can do. Hopefully, that's the WORST thing that happens. ALSO don't like (is this the ACTUAL plan?) the way they plan to submerge her: the science is advanced enough today to sink her on an even keel. Why have her go down at an angle like this? Doing this risks damage to her hull when she "impacts" the bottom. Unless there's a lot of soft sand under her keel, the keel at the bow WILL be damaged by this method. What >>> I
@CraigSList-ik9if2 ай бұрын
If you want to see what she'll look like in a few decades just look at the current state of the Andrea Doria wreck. They won't do anything to keep it from rotting away, that's nearly impossible in salt water and would be way too costly even if it was possible. In a hundred years she'll be gone and nobody will remember her. If anyone is still alive on Earth by then anyway. Sad but that's the truth.

is this the actual ship being sunk or is this a computer generated showing of it
