As grandiose as those Cruise ships are, the ".... Of The Sea's" vessels especially, they just look like motion sickness to look at. Magnificent, but not pretty. The Queen liners are both magnificent, not quite as grand but magnificent and pretty, in my personal opinion. I am not crazy about ocean cruises but, if I had to, it's Ocean Liner all the way.

Just showing how different Ocean Liners and Cruise Ships are is this departure by P&O’s Canberra and Oriana one year way back. Built as ocean liners, but then working as cruise ships. Oriana led the way out of Southampton going ahead. The next day in the Bay of Biscay, the sea was extremely rough with hardly anyone at breakfast. On Canberra we passengers we were only allowed on part of the Promenade deck for a small part beside the William Fawcett Room before not being allowed out at all with the doors roped to stop anyone going outside. Just before that happened, we slowly began to overhaul Oriana. Her bow with each big sea seeming to go under the top of the wave as it rolled over her as both ships powered there way forward across the Bay. Something no modern-day cruise ship Captain would ever dream of doing on purpose.
@johntechwriter2 ай бұрын
Another distinction… Cruise ships are in essence mobile feed lots, providing mind-numbing amounts of fodder to keep their cargo from becoming restless between stops at coastal tourist traps. An ocean liner must above all be beautiful, because it inspires in romantically inclined people the notion of a great adventure - crossing a vast and restless sea, where during the voyage anything can happen. Every ocean liner voyage is a high-stakes wager where past successes offer no guarantee the cruel sea can once again be kept at bay. In this formalistic half-life everyone plays out their role, aware that just outside the fiercest forces of nature are being overcome not just by machinery, but also by their intense desire to move through them and prevail. Every voyage is undertaken with the understanding that all aboard could share the same terrible fate. This creates a bond where no-one breaks the spell. Time stands still as their leviathan whisks its passengers onward. In that magical few days away from their dreary everyday world, adventures of all kinds can be had because the crossing is experienced not as a memory but as a dream, and who can be held accountable for their behavior while sleeping? As the destination nears and the spell begins to unwind, regrets about risks not taken blend with memories of those that were, until there is no telling them apart. And as with the very best dreams, the spirit fills in the blanks however vast, and carries the dreamer along through that tiresome interval known only to fools as life.

OMG, how very poetic! I wish I could give your short essay TEN thumbs up!👍 You encapsulated the "human element" of a "crossing" much more emotionally than any clinical dissection of ocean-going ships could ever do. It was during the Great Depression of the 1930s that the watch market crashed, and companies like Omega, Longines and Patek Phillipe generated additional revenue streams by building horological systems powerful enough to propel an ocean liner. However, the ships' motion was insufficient to drive an automatic rotor, and the concept failed due to the manpower required to manually wind such a system.

Thank you very much for this video explaining the difference between ocean-liners and other ships such as cruise-ships. If a regular cruise-ship (not an ocean-liner) wished to reposition itself, what would be the restictions that would be imposed on that regular cruise-ship in order for the regular cruise-ship to be allowed cross an ocean (such as the Atlantic Ocean if repositioning itself from the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean Sea)?
@JH-lw1fzАй бұрын
Average cruise ships will reposition at optimum weather and with only employees on board. Large Cruise ships that are Quantum class and above have zero problems navigating open ocean and in fact have transatlantic and transpacific itineraries.

The S.S. United States didn't end its career in 1952. That's when it started its historic career. She was retired in 1969 as the golden age of liners had come and gone and was replaced by faster, more affordable and reliable air travel. She's currently still afloat awaiting a sad fate as an artificial reef (the world's largest) at Pier 82 in Philadelphia where she was suppose to only spend around a month, but has instead been there for 28 years. She was suppose to undergo a two week tow down south to start the year long job of preparing her for this purpose just three weeks ago, but weather postponed those plans. It's amazing the ship still exists at all given how long she has been out of service, 55 years. In that time many attempts and plans have been drawn up and thrown out to save her as a museum or event venue. Unfortunately this has not come to pass. She will be sunk off florida as an artificial reef and diving attraction. A museum will be made on shore. Her fate has been sealed by a number variables. Having said that, it should be considered criminal what's being done.

I prefer the ocean liners - even the dual purpose types - to cruise ships, simply by the much more beautiful lines ocean liners often have. Many a cruise ship to me look more like an apartment block bolted to a barge. BTW MV Astoria used to be the Stockholm? That is one hell of a transformation.

I hope the Astoria is saved. 🥺 I have mostly traveled on Baltic ferries and I don't think they qualify as ocean liners. They look more like cruise ships, even though they kind of do the job of a liner. I once took a round trip around Gran Canaria. I don't think that was an ocean liner either. That ship just went all around Gran Canaria and nowhere else. (I don't know the name of that ship because it was before I cared about things like that).

A liner is a vessel which is on a set route. They can be general cargo, oil tankers or passenger vessels. I agree that some ships are built to a greater strength than others but that does not make them liners.

Hi Alan, The route the ship is designed for - the line voyage - makes it a liner. Those line voyage routes require specific design characteristics, that most liners share.

They should build an ocean liner cruise ship for the pacific. Imagine doing a Polynesian cruise coming in at 30 knots from Los Angeles
@SPPhotography8921 күн бұрын
The safety and durability of ships has improved over the years, due to fires and sinkings that have occurred. A certain thing has been done again better. For example, here in the Baltic Sea, ships must at least have their own engines to move in ice (1A / 1A Super). You don't need the hull of an icebreaker in those warm countries, but those storms at sea are in a class of their own. E.g. MV Arvin broke in two, of course it was a hollow tanker, and it was starting to show its age, besides the maintenance of the ship had been neglected. In terms of ship speeds, the GTS Finnjet was the fastest ship in the world for years, until diesel technology passed, and that ship is also a scrap in India.

Cruise ships can do those voyages but aren’t designed specifically to undertake those routes day in, day out for 30-40 years. QM2 was specifically designed for this route and as such is built stronger to withstand the weather for the long term. You’ll also usually see cruise ships take a more southerly route on the Atlantic to avoid the worst of what that ocean has to offer.

And the SS France was a dual purpose liner, which made it an attractive option for NCL.
@ChrisFrameOfficial2 ай бұрын
Interestingly the SS. France didn’t originally feature many of the elements that ultimately made her a successful cruise ship. When Knut Kloster bought the France people thought he was mad, but the refurbishment in Bremerhaven effectively transformed her into a dual purpose design that was then almost exclusively used for cruising. The addition of the outdoor entertainment areas, enhancement of interior spaces for cruising and addition of the big tender boats made it possible for her to effectively operate in the cruise market.

United States: 178 MW of power for only max. 1928 passengers! That's 92 kW per passenger at full power and full occupancy! If we assume an efficiency of 35% for the steam-turbine-propulsion, it was a fuel consumption of 264 kWh (~26 liters of diesel-equivalent) per hour or 372 kWh (37 liters of DE) per 100 km and passenger. Just to give you a rough impression of the downside of such fast ocean liners. Ships are known for being an efficient mode of transport. And they are, basically. But not, if they have to move tons of ship mass per passenger with such speed through the water. Of course, propulsion became more efficient, big ship diesel engines can achieve efficiencies of more than 50%. Nevertheless, It would still be a very energy-consuming way to cross the ocean. There are mainly two ways to minimize this problem: Less ship weight per passenger: small cabins, less "entertainment rooms", use of light materials. And less speed. Basically, fuel consumption per mile follows the speed squared.

The main reason for that is that its not a proportionately transport service. While you can ride as a transport service, its really not what its for. My ex-wife talked me into taking a rather expensive slightly more elite cruise to the Nordcap of Norway. It was okay but I kept bumping into evidence of the underside of the whole enterprise. Later when we were living in Italy when the Costa Concordia catastrophe happened. That cowedly captain he so embarrassed the Italians I worked with at Aviano AFB. But he really seems to encapsulate my impression of the whole industry. The whole service population being paid poorly paid living outa sight beneath the waterline not allowed to talk to the passengers or the macho white officers talking amongst themselves unawear of being overheard; talikg about the new girls in entertainment like meat. I don't get that vibe from international and local ferry services BTW by and large.
