Hey Boris, the dark birds are "Sturmvögel", Procellariidae. There are many species of different sizes, some dark, some white.. could for example be the "Weißkinn-Sturmvogel" (White-chinned petrel). They live out on the ocean when they're not breeding, like an Albatross, and are even related to those. So beautiful to see them fly!

Hallo Boris du holst doch toll auf und reparierst dein Schiff auch noch in krinkleliger See. Großartig, Chapeau‼️ Segele weiter deinen Streifen und knabber Stück für Stück die Distanz zur Spitze weg. Die haben auch ihre Probleme. Fonde einen smarten Kurs durch das Südpolarmeer. Wir drücken weiterhin die Daumen. Weiterhin Mast und Schotbruch sowie immer eine Hand breit Wasser unterm Kiel. I love watching the albatrosses. Anyone who doesn't know may be intrigued to look up how they "dynamic soar" to fly vast distances with little need to flap. They can actually lock their wings at full span. They use the difference in wind speed above the waves and between the waves to achieve this. (They can also slope soar large waves.) You can see the albatrosses in this clip rising above the waves then descending between them, while simultaneously changing their headings with respect to the wind - that's dynamic soaring, which allows them to extract energy from the wind to stay airborne. This is an incredible wonder of nature, easily visible from the back of an IMOCA. Both Boris and the albatrosses are being propelled by the wind in elegant ways! I am happy to see Boris taking some time to watch them. I hope that it helps with his mental well-being!

Hallo Boris, tolles Tool hast du da gebastelt. Ich hoffe alles passt erstmal soweit nach deiner Reparatur. Es ist natürlich klar, dass das Teil kaputt geht, für das man keinen Ersatz an Bord hat. Aber du hast es ja trotzdem reparieren können. Es ist so beruhigend ein solches Team im Rücken (Grüße gehen raus) zu haben. Ich denke, du weißt, dass du auch viele Fans hast, die mit dir fiebern und dir die Daumen drücken. Ich wollte es nur nochmal explizit sagen. Im Moment kannst du ja froh sein, nicht vorne mit dabei zu sein. Das scheint ein ganz schöner Höllenritt zu werden. Ich hoffe, dass alle das gut durchstehen. Dir wünsche ich natürlich auch gute Weiterfahrt im Southern Ocean. Und denk dran: To finish first you have to finish. LG

Ich zähle auf dein megakompetentes Team, die Hirnen jetzt und finden hoffentlich eine Lösung, die umsetzbar ist. Amazing footage of seabirds out there! There are two species of albatross in the video - the smaller Black-browed Albatross and at the end of the video a larger Wandering Albatross (the largest bird in the world!). The smaller dark birds look like White-chinned Petrels, although there are other similar species that could be around. When they're close, you can typically see the white under the beak that distinguishes this species

You definitely have that ‘windswept and interesting’ look today, a sign that you have been busy of course. Wonderful to see the albatross’s swooping around. I believe the small birds are Manx Shearwaters which migrate from North to South following the warmer weather. They are also very entertaining to watch, nearly as much fun as remote-controlled model planes. The Southern Ocean is definitely living up to its reputation giving most sailors a difficult time. Stay strong Boris but most of all stay safe. 💪👏

I agree that the smaller all-black birds are shearwaters (the name is given for their flight where they sometimes touch the water with their wing tips, shearing it). The first smaller albatross is a mollymawk, easily identified by their relatively smaller size and especially the black of the dorsal surface of the wings continues across the back of the body. I could not be sure about the second albatross, but it did not seem to have the continuous black and was larger, so probably a southern royal albatross. And he should be seeing lots of tiny storm petrels as well.

Nope - this has nothing to do with hanggliding or hangsoaring! This is called dynamic soaring. The birds constantly change between areas of higher wind speed a few meters above the see and areas of lower wind speed close to the surface. Notice as they make right hand turns and left hand turns accordingly.

I was really admiring you during all the tough, zero wind or light wind moments earlier in the race, I learnt a lot from you that it is important to stay calm Boris. I know you have a storm going through you head but from the outside you look the toughest guy out there 💪 in our sport we are helpless sometimes but there is still long way to go.
