We use the word 'father' all the time in the Church. So what did Jesus mean when He said never to use it?

As a Protestant, I really struggled with the vast range of beliefs we had across denominations even though we all were reading the same Scriptures and all agreed the Bible was all we needed. Asking (and learning) "but what did it mean to the early Christians?" was a critical step in my journey towards the true Faith. So easy to read things in an isolated manner through only the lens of our current culture and time.

Absolutely! A lot of beautifully peaceful answers are found by looking at what Early Christians believed. And it's powerful knowing our faith is the same as theirs.

100% true I grew up Baptist but I now go to an Orthodox church but am not catechized yet I do still have some questions but I think Orthodoxy is the closest we have to the original I was blown away by the reverence holiness and the nice and non judging laity. I realized protestantism has it all wrong when I saw my first Divine liturgy.

In the Pentecostal church I go to, we frequently ask "but what did these scriptures mean to the early church?" We are always trying to align ourselves closer and closer to the early church, to the apostles, and God the Son. However, I do not see the answers in the Western denominations. So, if Orthodoxy is THE Church, that is were I will go.

As a devotee protestant, I felt really good about that video, you showed the correct arguments without just saying "protestant reformation invented that", but even quoting the reformers on the topic. Sadly nowadays a lot of protestants contradict the reformers and adopt easily just "bad arguments" and bad interpretations of the Bible of misunderstandings. The Reformation was about returning to the old faith, not inventing anything by our own understanding of the Bible, and I hope your videos along with protestant videos correcting wrong modern protestant misunderstandings could help the entire church.

Hi, thanks for your channel as I am currently exploring Eastern Orthodoxy. I am also, however, reading/listening to those who have left Eastern Orthodoxy; namely, ex-Orthodox Priest Joshua Schooping and the ex-Orthodox community on Reddit.

I'd recommend Craig Truglia and Fr. John Whiteford's response to Schooping. He's largely an egomaniac who became bitter because he wasn't getting enough attention in Orthodoxy and couldn't succeed in hamfisting his unexamined protestant worldview in Orthodoxy.

May I suggest, that the title "Father", is a reference to Christ God. As with venerating an Icons, the 'honour is passed over to the archytype'. So when we greet a priest with 'Father', we are greeting Christ/God the Father, honouring Him.
@patredman3733
@patredman3733 Жыл бұрын
The holders of these titles must not claim them to themselves but recognise it is because others can glimpse God through them, as you say they are pointers to God. I’m so sad that the Anglican Church (? &others?) are changing the Lord’s Prayer to “Our parent”. Come Lord Jesus.

Usually I find that anytime the Bible seemingly contradicts itself its because English translations are horrible and/or we are so removed from historical context that the meaning is lost. Another issue is translators trying to connect the gospels too closely. My biggest pet peeve is the Luke verse "Wherever the Body is there the Eagles are gathered together." Only the KJV is correct. In context Jesus is talking about Christians being gathered by the angels. But because of translators wanting sychronicity they replaced eagles with vultures to match the other gospels that are talking about sinners in a similar text, regardless that the Greek words used Clearly deliniated that they were very different passages. Ok. Rant over.

Similar way as we are called sons (and daughters) of God by grace, after Him Who is the Only-Begotten Son of God by nature, so the title "father" is given to priests by grace. Very same logic can be applied to many other titles: Jesus Christ is the Angel (literally "Messenger") of the Lord by nature, and thus faithful spirits and even some people are called messengers (angels and prophets) of God by grace. Jesus is the King, thus people who are ordained by God's will to lead their people are called kings. Jesus is the Shepherd, Jesus is the Priest, Jesus is the Judge. I could keep going on, but the point is clear. Very same pattern is in the heart of *_theosis_* too.

Matthew 23:6-10 "They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’, for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your Father, for One is your Father, He who is in Heaven. And do not be called Teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ." I believe these people were putting themselves in the place of Deity, God. By capitalizing these words is showing honor to God. And when you do this, it makes complete sense. If you are called any of these things you are a little teacher, rabbi, or father. But do not be called Teacher, Rabbi, or Father. For only One are those things.
@Patristix
@Patristix 2 күн бұрын
The actual practice of capitalising letters is a newer topic, as the original Greek text would not have used capitals except for names. But you're absolutely right about your main point, the problem isn't in the actual word 'teacher' or 'father', but in trying to put oneself in God's place, rather than realising that the titles of 'teacher' or 'father' are about truthfully representing Him.
@Shinsenchu
@Shinsenchu 3 сағат бұрын
@@Patristix And just as you show honor and glory to God Almighty by capitalizing Deity words, there is a opposite effect as well. Matthew 16:23 "But He turned and said to Peter, get behind Me, satan. You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men."
