Great points brother. The early Church began with the new Christians participating in " the prayers". " And they held steadfastly to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers."-Acts 2:42. Those were liturgical prayers that had been written down and repeated daily in the temple for hundreds of years. The new Church continued that practice.

There is an error at 4:16 after the quote from John Chrysostom: the quote from St Issac the Syrian is not in the captions, and then there is a minor mistake at 4:24 (a double t in the word "there"). Lovely video, thank you for this introductory explanation of this concept in simple terms. As a Protestant considering Orthodoxy this topic is one of many little issues I have come across... and will need to defend to my protestant friends and family if I convert. I was beginning to lean towards this interpretation, because it seemed more and more like the only way to make any sense of it. I don't see how one can spend their entire lives in prayer, and not repeat themselves. Not to mention, in Luke 18:1-8, Jesus Himself teaches us via a parable that our prayers should be persistent, and in Luke 11:1-8 Jesus gives us the oft-repeated Lord's prayer, immediately followed by a parable that teaches us to ask repeatedly, with persistence. I always found the apparent contradiction very complicated. The only solution I see is that, indeed, repetition is a good thing, and that the verse about "vain repetition" has the emphasis on the word "vain".

The vain, repetitious prayer Jesus warned about was the type of prayer described in 1 Kings 18:26-28: Quote: “And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.” The pagans would call upon the name of their gods over and over until they got the god to respond. If their god responded, it made the shaman or holy man a big shot, capable of calling the gods down from heaven. That's the "vain" part. The "repetitious" part is not the problem. Jesus prayed the same prayer three times in the Garden. The angels in heaven endlessly repeat "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is THE LORD GOD, THE ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME." Now that's repetitious prayer, but it's pleasing to God. Just like the Rosary. Keep on prayin'! Here is a list of some in each category that you can check in your Bible. The problem also lies with the poor interpretation in the KJV which came up with the words "vain repetition." The translators of the King James version in the early 17th century were the FIRST to change to that subtle meaning, and some think it was to be a direct attack on the CC for praying the rosary. The original Greek gospel, however, used a word that was a combination of two words that literally meant "babbling nonsense words" and as the video shows, there was NO connotation that banned REPEATING prayers. The Hail Mary prayer is NOT "babbling nonsense"....the words come from the gospel of Luke.

Everytime i get distracted when doing pre-formulated prayers, i get jerked. It's like God shaking me to get back to prayer.

So how about when im praying for my friend or her friend, and she asks me to say prayer for her or her friend and to keep on praying for her situation, and I do mean what i say in my prayers, but I repeat the same prayer is that wrong? like for example my friends friend is in the hospital, so im praying for healing, strength, love, comfort and peace for the situation daily. Thanks

Yes my mind tends to overthink things especially seeing the word repetitive, and thinking back to how Ive been praying repetitive, but not from an empty heart, but meaning it in my prayers hoping to stay strong in prayers even if its repetitve for my friends, family and prayers for others.
