What non-Lovecraft readers fail to understand about Cthulhu is that he's more than just a gigantic monster: He's also a psionic juggernaut who, just by being awake, can cause nightmares and madness all across the globe, and the mere sight of him causes madness. To see Cthulhu, or even just to be in his presence, is to risk madness... and as we see with these cultists, not even his most devout followers are immune.

Look, I understand what you meant, but I really believe showing him wouldn’t hurt much of the ideia mostly because we, who were not born in the 20/30’s, we all have different ideas for how fear strikes us. Nowadays we are much more afraid of seeing the consequence of things. I mean, it would be so much more interesting to show Cthulhu close to some cities and the world around it falling a part as people commit suicide, scream, destroy each other, than just showing part of his silhouette. I know that in the books, it’s different, but the game is not a book and there are other people who was waiting for the game to see those things in a visual way. I mean, like bloodborne, which is very lovecraft inspired, did. Well, at least it’s what I believe.

A LOT of comments about being disappointed about not seeing enough of Cthulhu, but you have to realize giant monsters can represent different things. take Godzilla, Godzilla is a monstrous representation of the devastation of nuclear power. In this his massive size is meant to represent an external threat too great to be conquered, something too large for any one power to overcome. Cthulhu is different, he's a giant monster, but of the mind, his size is meant to represent a scope too large to comprehend. Both are giant, but one is too big for the body to deal with, and the other too vast for the mind to handle.
@ricotheskunk30626 жыл бұрын
Jacob Michie Okay, good. THIS comment ISN’T condescending like the ones from hardcore fans of H.P.’s work. I’m one of these “normies” who wanted to see more than just a half second of Cthulhu, and seeing these comments from people who know their stuff on this subject matter makes me feel unwelcome or unwanted.

Yeah that’s great and all but we really wanted to at least see about a minute of him at least not a microsecond it’s like Godzilla all over again lol
@mikewmccann6 жыл бұрын
Jacob Michie I like that, the contrast between strength of body and strength of mind. People like to talk about Cthulhu like he can bend reality, but I never came across anything like that in Lovecrafts original work. When Lovecraft created Cthulhu and the other great old ones he made great use of science and what it might unleash upon us. In Lovecraft’s work humanity would make science this unknown power that humanity couldn’t hope to comprehend and by tampering with it unleash nightmarish monsters that were superior to humanity in every way. Sound familiar? I like the comparison to Godzilla because at the time of Lovecraft’s life and death, science was relatively new. Can you image if Lovecraft was alive when the H-bomb was first unleashed? How it might have affected the Cthulhu mythos? Perhaps he would have wrote nuclear energy as a food source, maybe members the Manhattan Project were secretly apart of the Cthulhu cult, perhaps the bomb would be the catalyst necessary to awaken the great old ones? Simply put if Lovecraft lived to see the bomb drop, would the Cthulhu mythos start to look like a Godzilla movie? This why I would like to see a Godzilla vs Cthulhu movie, not just because either character is incredibly well know, but because of what they would represent and the contrast between the two, of order and chaos, and body and mind.
@caiopatric6 жыл бұрын
I don't dislike not seeing it, just disappointed that it was just a stinger at the end, and there was no real contact. so we'll only see that if there's a sequel.
@Noxoth2336 жыл бұрын
I get the disappointment, but keep in mind that while it diverged, this game is still based of the original source material, and in that book, the protagonist himself never even saw Cthulhu, his description comes from an account of a sailor that encountered Cthulhu. The thing to remember is again, Cthulhu is a beast of the mind, he's not meant to pop out and scare you, rather the horror comes from knowing this monster is just waiting to attack, and when it does there's no hope in stopping it. This is why a lot of people, myself included, will say most games and even movie or literary sources don't get cosmic horror right, the fear comes from the fact that we can't understand what threatens us, and what little we do shows that there is no hope of stopping it. now that said, if you don't like this kind of set up, I perfectly understand, Lovercraftian themes can be a little overrated. Much of what people would considered Lovecrafian writing is very Gothicly inspired and Gothic stylings can come with their own baggage. There is also the undeniable problem that one of the central inspiration for Lovecraft's work was very raciest, there is a very good reason why the creators of this game omitted certain aspects of the book. As such, I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of Lovecraft's work, he had a couple of good stories, but looking back, its hard to find stories like shadows over Insmoth all too positive a read when you realize a lot of it is steeped in a fear of multiracial couples. But even with that, I do find Lovecraft's work and life fascinating, as while Lovecraft's own prejudices help to shape some of those themes, it wasn't all based around it. If there is one word to describe both Lovecraft work and his life, it is insecure, from his household, to his relationships, to his studies, and even his place in the universe and society, it all comes from that place of insecurity. That's why the fear of Cthulhu and all of Lovecraft's works resonates with so many, this feeling of insecurity. The feeling that you don't know where you stand in this universe, and knowing the answer to that might be far worse then not.

They do not make any distinction between humans save for those they can use to their advantage, and as soon as they outlived their usefulness, they are the same as everyone else. More often than not, they don't even chose their subjects, it all happens passively, while they are dreaming. Their presence and influence corrupts, and those with weak minds will falter. Yog-Sothoth is observed by the narrator in one of lovecraft stories, during the failed invocation by his half human brood, so that could work with the lore to see part of it. Azathoth less so, if my memory is right, in the silver key, the main character, a sorcerer who saw more than most mortals could imagine and talked with nyarlathothep fear even hearing the screams of azathoth, for it would break even his iron hard will and sanity.

As someone who loves Lovecraft's work, Lovecraft fans are mostly akin to Rick and Morty fan levels of cringe. "You just dont understand cuz you dont read Lovecraft!" Doesnt matter whether or not they showed Cthulu because the game itself was boring and dull. There's no creativity taken with the story or the characters. It's all been done before and in an age where Cthulu can be bought as an adorable plushie at Hot Topic, creators need to do more if they want to bring a true visual horror to Lovecraft's work. While the animation and occasionally sound design really left something to be desired in places, this is without a doubt the definitive Lovecraftian horror video game.
