( close to Die rise), Angola(buried), and nuketown (camp Edward, this was proven to have high amount of 115 under the earth). With all of that, it would've had the perfect amount of destruction to destroy the earth as we see them do.

Maxis told the bo1 boys to do it in order to "minimize the damage Richtofen will cause", meaning it would cripple his connection to earth and the aether. And given how in bo2 Richtofen is constantly telling Stuhlinger to "mend the rift", and how much more powerful Richtofen gets if you chose to do so, id say it at least worked to a certain extent

The reason why they are on Moon is because Richtofen wanted to take over Samantha's body to control the zombies (and the earth through the zombies probably), Maxis had thought that something like this might happen so his contingency plan is to blow up the earth so that he had nothing to take over or control and limit the power he had.... cue BO2 Zombies. Also while this is happening, some CIA and CDC guys are fighting zombies on Nuketown
