I am from Latvia and have quite a little experience with growing calla lilies. I have them only for two years and now that one of them has produced seed pods I started to look for info on how to harvest the seeds. Nothing in my language unsurprisingly. :) I am glad I found your videos, I hope I'll have nice new plants next season. Thank you for sharing your experience, this encourages young enthusiasts like me to try their luck. :) Marta

Jessica Gomez I just started watering the ones in this video to bring them out of dormancy in our greenhouse. They will be 3 year old plants this year. Last fall the rhizomes were about as big as my little finger. Glad you had success growing yours. They live a long time and will reward you for many years after they start to bloom which usually takes 4 to 5 years from seed. They are expensive plants to buy when old enough to flower. Bernard

This year will be my first to grow calla lilies and get seeds. I have always loved callas. I have seed pods right now, they are still green so I am waiting for them to yellow. My callas are the variegated kind. I wanted to make sure I am not missing a step. 1- pick the seed pods and get the seeds out. 2- air dry the seeds out on cardboard (not in the sun) 3- once they are dry sprinkle them in potting soil and press gently with my thumb and spray with water (daily? Do they need sun during this?) 4- I will see a white spot on my seeds and they will begin to sprout within 40 days 5- once I have spouts replant in a seed starter. I was going to go ahead and get the seeds once they yellow, dry them out, and plant them, and keep them inside until next summer. I live near Memphis, TN so I know it wouldn't be good for them to be outside.

All the infomation is on my playlist on Calla Lilies. I cover each step and show you what I do. Leave the pods on the plant as long as you can. Mine have been blooming for 3 or 4 weeks and the pods won't be ready to pick for seeds until almost the first frost in October. I only pull mine early if it was going to freeze. They pods should be a yellow brown color and be soft and a little mushy when the are ready. You can get the seeds out right away and it is real messy or you can let them dry and get them out later. There are 1 to 5 in each section of the pod. After you get them out you need to get the protective film off of them and they let them dry for a while before you plant them. I planted mine last year in March. Once you have enough roots and a little size to the leaves then you transplant them in 6 pack size containers. I leave them in the 6 packs and let them go dormant in our greenhouse all winter and when it warms up the next spring they will have a hole in the soil and the new growth will come up through the hole and after it gets a few leaves you can plant them outside or in larger pots in a greenhouse or a sunny window. They need to be hardened off before they are put in direct sunlight outdoors or they might die. Bernard

White Calla Lilies are my daughter's favorite flower. Her birthday is in May. I'd love to give her some home grown ones as a present. I would like to give her the flowers but I'd LOVE to grow them from a seed. 2 questions..#1 Where can I get some good seeds from? #2 If I got some today, should I plant them now(I live in zone 7b north Texas)? I would start them indoors with a heating mat.

Hello Bernard! Thank you so much for these wonderful videos. I bought a Calla Lily (in a pot) this year, and it's quite large with 15 flowers on them with most of them now with loads of seed pods. Our winters in Saskatchewan can range anywhere from -10 C (14 F) to -40 C (-40 F). Should I have the seeds under a heat lamp, or will just having them inside be good enough? Thanks again!

Thanks for your wonderfully detailed videos! I have grown around 50 calla lily seedlings with your method so far! They are all in a flat with one leaf on each right now. They have been this way for 2 or more months now, just growing a tiny bit taller. I started them in Feb. I am in zone 5 Green Bay Wi and I don't know what to do with them next, besides maybe give them their own pots for the summer and fertilize? But I don't know quite how to harden off so I can keep outside. Mostly, I don't know to overwinter them come winter. Do I do it in their own pots in a cool room and let go dormant like I've done with the bigger pots? I read they might not need that dormant state in their first year. I dont have tons of room or grow lights. Just a room off the garage that stays cool enough for overwintering calla and barely cool enough for colcasia and cannas and caladiums. If you would have any suggestions for me I could really use your guidance from here :) Thanks for your help I'm hoping to hear from you soon :)

I did a video on 5-7-13 showing how I transplanted the calla lilies to 6 packs titled Calla Lilies Grown From Seed. The seeds were planted 44 days earlier and it took them 24 to 30 days to germinate. Put them in 6 packs in store bought potting soil following the instructions in the above video. Garden soil has diseases that can kill new seedlings. All of mine had one leaf and some were just starting to show second leaf growth. Keep them out of direct sunlight for 3 to 4 days until the roots have established in the new soil. Calla Lilies need 55 degrees to grow and if you temps are that high during the day put them outside in a shaded protected spot for a couple of days and then over a period of 10 to 14 days slowly give them more sunlight until they are in full sun for half off the day. I have bushes on the west side of my Callas that block the afternoon sun. Since you live in a colder aear they can take more sunlight than callas grown in hotter climates.Try to avoid afternoon sun because it is the hottest and strong winds which can dry them out. If they are left outside and it goes below 55 degrees they will stop growing until it is above 55 again. If they freeze they will die. Plants can freeze quicker in a pot than if they were in the ground. Make sure they do not dry out but do not overwater or they can rot. I keep mine in the 6 packs the whole first year and when they die back in the fall I store them in a cool place that will not freeze or get above 55 degrees. 40 to 50 degrees is best. I keep mine in the greenhouse on a lower shelf that does not get very much sun and I lightly water them every 2 to 3 weeks. They are dormant and do not need very much water. You could just mist the soil. I keep the greenhouse above freezing to keep all of our plants alive. When the temps start to average 55 degrees they will start to grow the second year and produce many leaves and that is when you can pot them up and by this time you can see what the plants will look like from the leaf coloration. They are slow growers and after the second year they grow a lot faster. The tuber is starting to form and it takes a while for that to happen. If you watch the videos I did on them this year you will understand what they will look like next year. The stem dies and the plant goes dormant and you will see a hole where the stem was. The tiny new tuber is at the bottom of the hole and will send a shoot up through the hole and with enough light will start growing new leaves. The more leaves you get the bigger the tuber becomes. Next year after you pot them up or put them in your garden they will grow and flower in 3 to 5 years from seed. In the ground you wait until the foliage dies back and dig them up and let them dry out and store them until the next spring. In WI that is probalby August. Just kidding! They are worth the effort to grow. Potted house plants can be put outside during the spring and summer and brought in before a hard freeze. Some people call them rhizones, some call them tubers and others call them rhizome tubers. I have a playlist on them that I think is 17 videos. Bernard

Well I just transplanted 72 Calla Lilly seedlings and I need to go get some more flats. I easily have that many more that need transplanting. Thank you for your videos explaining the process of harvesting the seeds and how to grow them. I live in Atlanta on the edge of Zone 7 and 8. At what point can I plant these outside and leave them?
@navajopa3110 жыл бұрын
Calla Lilies will not grow until the soil temps are 55 degrees or higher. Below that temp they may rot in the soil when they are young transplants. I am in zone 7 and it would be around the 3rd week of May before I could put them out. That is when I put my stored tubers back into the soil. In the fall they stop growing when the temps fall below 55 and start to go into their dormant period. This is the first winter in many years that I had to lift them from the soil to keep the tubers from freezing in the ground. Bernard

Bought a pot of pink and red calla lily from a garden exhibition, the flower seems to be all gone now, I am wondering if I have to force the plant into dormant even if my country don't have winter? If yes, how long should I let the plant to dry out before transplant the rhizome back onto pot? @navajopa3110 жыл бұрын
After they mature which will be about 5 years from seed they start to enlarge the rhizome in the soil. It can take from 3 to 5 more years for the rhizome to grow large enough to be divided. When they get to large and/or crowded they do not flower as much and that is when you divide the rhizomes for more plants. Since this process takes a long time that is why they are so expensive. They are divided during the dormant period in areas where they have to be dug up.The cuts are dried by exposure to the air and store until the next spring. In warmer climates since they are left in the ground they can be dug up and replanted a few days later after they dry out a bit. You may have reached your limit of questions since you are growing them from seed you will not use this information for many years. Bernard

Thank you for posting these videos. This was the first year I have planted calla lily bulbs and they have produced a bunch of seed pods. Does producing pods affect the bulbs? Can't wait to let the pods dry up and try this out next spring!!
@navajopa319 жыл бұрын
+Renee Held It does require a lot of any plants energy to make seeds. Calla Lilies planted from seed usually will grow seed pods in 3 to 5 years. If they do grow seeds early most people will cut them off so that the rhizomes under the soil grows larger. A 3 year old plants rhizome is about the size of a quarter. The older and larger the rhizomes the more flowers you have. If you cut off the seed pods on older Callas the rhizome expands into multiple rhizomes each putting up more flowers in future years. If you cut off the flowers when they start to fade you get more flowers because the plant still needs to flower in order to make seeds. You can divide the rhizomes when their flower production becomes less over time showing it is time to divide them. The rhizome will be quite large then, larger than your hand. Bernard

***** I have a whole playlist on Calla Lilies. They are tropical and temps below freezing will kill them. In the ground with heavy mulch during the winter they can be protected from freezing if done properly. The seeds form inside the flower and as long as the flower stem is alive. You remove the seed head when it turns a yellow brown color and each pod feels soft to the touch. All this is coverd in videos in my playlist. Bernard

Hi there, Someone just gave me some cut Calla Lilies and I am pretty new to gardening. I was wondering if I would be able to re-pot the cut Calla lilies that I have so as to regrow them later on. I'm not sure how that would work...Is it possible or should I just start new from seeds? Thank you!
@navajopa319 жыл бұрын
+kconley1324 If you are talking about trying to replant calla lily stems with flowers on them that have been removed from the plants the answer is no. Since calla lilies can take up to 5 years to flower from seed it is best to buy plants (reasonable price) at your garden center that are already in flower or buy mature rhizomes (more expensive) and plant them in the soil. If cared for properly calla lilies live a long time. Some of ours are 15 to 20 years old. Since the rhizome in the ground multiplies over time you get more free plants. Thanks for the sub! Bernard

Myrna: The seeds are a light brown color when dry and do not have a hard shell. They do have a thin protective menbrane. Look on my Calla Lily playlist and watch the videos named: Calla Liliy seed removal and Calla Lily seed cleaning Removing the protective coating. Are you sure you are talking about Calla Lily seeds. Calla Lily seeds form in a pod covered by the flower after it fade. teh pods are green and when they turn a yellow/brown color the seeds can be removed. Cannas and Bird of Paridise have a hard black shell?

Please help?! I don't know what to do but I think all of my calla seedlings might have damping off because I'm watching them get soft at the stem one by one:( is there anything I can do to salvage the ones that are left there's a couple or a few in each pot.
@navajopa3110 жыл бұрын
Damping off is a fungal disease that comes from the soil and can affect any new seedling, especially if the soil has stayed wet and not allowed to dry out between waterings. Damping off happens more to plants that were in a cold area with poor ventilation. Calla Lilies do not like to stay wet at any time whether the are seedlings or mature plants. They will rot and die if too wet. If they have damping off they will look like they have been pinched at the soil level and they will fall over and usually turn black .You could remove they ones that are still ok if they have enough roots to move them and plant them in sterile soil (that is why I use sterile seed starter mix) or other soil that is not diseased like name brand store bought potting soil. You would have to rinse off any soil on the roots so the disease is not tranferred to the new soil. Usually most in the same container will die if one dies. Good luck! Bernard

Nicole: I usually cut to pods off before the first fall killing frost which is between the 3rd week of October and the 1st week of December. I let them dry out for 6 o 8 weeks and then remove the seeds and membrane covering the seeds. I let the seeds dry out and plant them the 3rd week of March here in central Virginia which is 1 month before our normal last frost. We have a small greenhouse. Bernard

I thought they are grown from ryzhones? and not seeds. Can you verify?
@navajopa3110 жыл бұрын
Kaidy: I have a whole playlist on Calla Lilies explaining the whole process. Special care is required to be able to harvest viable seeds. The rhizones become larger over time and can be divided for more plants. On mature plants the seeds grow in the flower which becomes a seed pod and if left on the plant long enough for the individual seed pods to turn a browish color they will be viable. It takes from 3 to 5 years for the new plant grown from seed to produce flowers. If you have more than one kind the seeds can cross pollinate and you may not get the same color flower that the seeds came from. If you cut the flowers off the seeds cannot grow inside the flower. Bernard
@reelboy7110 жыл бұрын
OK.. So when you plant it from seeds, does the seed on the ground will eventually becomes rhyzones over the years? And when this rhyzone matures it will reproduce seeds and so on?
@navajopa3110 жыл бұрын
Kaidy Kuna That is correct. When the seed germinates you have growth above the soil and the round seed shell is still attached at or just below the soil and it becomes the new rhizome and you have the roots under the shell suppying the new growth and the new rhizome. Since the these seeds in nature normally fall to the ground they do require light to germinate. I push the seeds into a seed starting mix and use a spray bottle of water to water them in. Other people cover the seed with about 1/16th of an inch. Either way they will grow as long as they are not covered by too much soil. Another way to germinate them is using the wet paper towel method to germinate the seeds and then you plant them in soil. What zone do you live in? Bernard

Kaidy Kuna Some people call them rhizomes but they are actually tubers. I forgot to mention this. Bernard
