FINALLY! Someone actually demonstrating HOW to plant a calla lily in the ground. Thank you so much. I've watched quite a number of videos on callas; but they all seem to be planting them in containers, or simply TELLING us how to plant them, without actually SHOWING us how (depth of planting, adding ammendments, etc.). I understand the directions they are giving, of course; but I tend to be more of a visual learner. So it was very satisfying to see your demonstration. 💚😊💚

Hi Roseanne. After watching umpteen various videos I'm getting to the point that I honestly don't know which is the right or wrong way to plant these wonderful Lilies. I have just watched a Lady on "Harvesting History LLC" in the USA who goes against everything that other experts recommend regarding the planting depth etc, plus appears to use very basic soil/compost and cleanliness. I make sure that all my pots are washed and clean from any bacteria that is lurking in the old soil prior to planting. Therefore I'm going to stick with "Roseanne's Garden" Advice as it works for me here in the UK. Please keep your great videos coming and Thank You as I for one really appreciate them as I'm sure do a lot of others.

Hi Stuart! Isn't it the truth - the more you do research, the more you get conflicting recommendations. The way I take care of my Calla's are the way my Aunt took care of hers....and it works. I’ve always though Calla Lilies are beautiful, but the cost of a plant at a nursery has always stopped me in my tracks because I always thought they were strictly an annual! Just this winter I learned that the rhizomes can be saved just like Cannas. I have seen some rhizomes for sale on the gardening websites, but I think I’m going to wait and get some from a local nursery here in MN when they open. I’m in Brooklyn Park. It’s always nice to find a gardener on KZbin in my same zone. It makes me more confident that I can grow the same things when something that catches my eye, such as these beautiful Calla Lillies!

@RosannesGarden

@@ericunderwood Hi Eric, I do not start my Calla's indoors. The truth is, I have so many Calla bulbs that keep multiplying, I have more than I need. However, as an experiment, I did try some indoors a couple of years ago. They took about one year to get a bulb the size of a large pea. Because of our climate, I would need to dig up those little peas in the fall and I was afraid the little bulbs would dry out during winter storage. So, long story, I do not. However, if I lived in a more temperate climate, where I could leave the bulbs in the ground all year, I would definitely try it to get more variety.

@@RosannesGarden I ended up trying some inside, just the panted some from Fleet Farm yesterday! I planted Cannas, Calla Lillies and Caladiums this weekend indoors. I just can’t wait for gardening season! I’ll transition all of them outside and then plant them when the danger of frost has passed. Hopefully they will all get a nice little jump start indoors. 😊

Hi Roseanne. We've had a decent Spring for a week or two now but unfortunately now it's turning back to our normal of Cold Wet Weather approx 10-12C. I've just bought 5 new Rhizomes but don't ask me what the varieties are it just said mixed colours, probably because I'm a bit on the tight side and buy cheap!!!!!!! What I have done is given them some slow release fertilizer pellets this time while mixing the compost, but I won't complain if they are as good as the last years which I stored in my garage and are now showing ever so slightly (Sorry I'm repeating myself) I just wish that I could plant them out in the Garden but I daren't, before today we've had Snow in June unbelievable really. Keep up the great videos.

Hi Stuart. I finished planting up about 2/3 of all of my Calla bulbs. There's a chance it will freeze in the next couple of weeks, but the little plants are under the ground at that point, or very small above ground. I find that the plants do just fine. I have not, however, planted out anything else. It's going to be a busy May! Keep me posted.

Greetings to Rhode Island! I think that starting the callas indoors seems just fine. I’m not sure about your growing zone, but here they will generally flower about 4 to 6 weeks after planting, and then keep producing blooms for another 4 to 6 weeks. Starting them early would just mean that they bloom earlier and finish earlier. Maybe in your zone they bloom for much longer. If the bulbs are not beginning to dry out, you can even hold the bulbs and start them later, if you’d like them to bloom during August for example. It any rate, it sounds like you have a plan that works.

Hi! Glad you like the Calla's! I plant the Callas in late April or early May, as soon as the likelihood of snow is over and the ground has begun to warm. Basically, I plant them about two weeks before our last expected frost date, which around here is the middle of May. Even if it freezes at night, the bulbs will not freeze in the ground with a light frost. They begin blooming about four or five weeks later in mid June and continue to bloom for about four to six weeks. The white Callas start earlier and finish earlier than the red ones. Then, I enjoy the foliage for the rest of the growing season until they are ready for winter storage, sometime in October. I keep them indoors (see my other Calla video on overwintering Calla bulbs) until they are ready to be planted out the following spring. And so the cycle repeats..... Hope that helped! Thanks for watching!

It doesn't hurt to mark the colours on the rhizome with a sharpie marker. Just keep it minimal. I have some black ones going on year 11 in containers. I split them last year into 2 pots. Quite fearfully I might add...lol. I leave them in soil and put them into my cold room in the basement and cover with a clear plastic bag so I can see what's going on. When they start to sprout, I bring them back outside. Their home is on cement by a brick wall in full sun. Zone 6b. Great video ;)

What a wonderful video! My bulb doesn't look anything like yours. It is flat as a pancake & looks like a paw print. One side is a little bit darker than the other side so I planted the dark side up hoping that this was where the lily will originate. It is also super tiny. Maybe 2 inches across at best. I put it into a planter on its own. It should be a wonderful shade of fushia (so, the box says)

Hi Rosanne, thanks for your video. You mentioned deadheading before it starts to form seed pod. Since it the flower keeps its integrity for so long, I have a hard time knowing when to deadhead. Do you have any advice on that? Or can you show us in a video sometime this summer? Thank you!
@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that great question. I actually had video of it last summer and deleted it at the last moment. I'm not sure why. 🤔 You can tell when the blooms start losing their color and start turning green. They are still pretty and I usually leave them alone until they flop over. You can also feel the base of the bloom, as it starts getting hard as the seed pod starts developing. You can snip the stems at the base, or, if they are really floppy and green, you can tug gently at the base and the stem will just come free. It is a learned technique and sometimes the leaves come along (which is not so good). Hope that helps!

I am sorry to hear that and a bit confused myself. White Callas are lovely though. Sometimes, when plants are hybridized, they do "revert" over time to their original parentage. I have had that happen with variegated hosta turning all green again. It has to do with how stable the hybrid is. Once a plant reverts, it will not ever go back. But, I'm happy to say that I have no experience with my red Callas reverting. They are not cheap, and I receive no commission, but I have purchased my red bulbs from McClure and Zimmerman at www.mzbulb.com/

Hi Roseanne. You say that you actually feed your Calla Lillies approx every 6 weeks but what do you actually feed/fertilise them with??? Blood, Fish & Bone, Seaweed, Farm Manure etc. Sorry to be nuisance asking questions. I personally used Levington (Makers Name) Tomorite Tomato Feed for my first attempt last year but is this the right thing to do?? we've just had a great 3 weeks here in the North West UK (Lancashire/Yorkshire border without rain (Extremely Unusual) and my Cala's are starting to sprout ever so small in my pots, brilliant just hope this weather keeps up. So, what can I do better to feed them. Any advice appreciated as usual. Have a Great Summer. Stuart.

Hi Stuart. I love to help with anything Calla's! I sprinkle organic, granular fertilizer around the base of the plants. Nothing special. Something like 4-6-4. I haven't found that they are very fussy plants, and I'm sure tomato fertilizer would probably be just fine. It's been so cold here that our Spring is about two to three weeks behind. Some years I have my Calla's all planted by now. This year, I might get them planted next week if it warms up. Ugh. Have a great summer too and let me know how they turned out! Rosanne

Hi Roseanne. It's been a while but a lot has happened since my last contact. I have just opened my cardboard boxes with all of my calla's in Sawdust and 50% of them had turned to mush and yet the Rhizomes were perfectly dry. I'm totally devastated as I had built up a pretty large collection. I stored the boxes in my Garage wrapped with Fleece to keep them clear of the cold frosts which we get here in Saddleworth North East of Manchester. Any help or suggestions is appreciated because this must be something that I'm doing wrong when storing them away for Winter. 1. Should I wash them to remove all compost and dry them. 2. Leave to dry and just brush away all loose compost. 3. HELP Hope all is well with you and your family. Stuart.

Greetings Stuart! I am so very sorry to hear about your Calla bulbs! It sounds like you've had good luck other winters? I really can't say what happened, but mush is typically what happens when they freeze. Ventilation is also important, but the temperature sounds like a possible culprit. My very first video was how to over-winter Calla bulbs. You might find it interesting. Of course, in gardening, there are many ways to achieve the same result. This is what I do: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqaqoouGqdRsgbM Keep in touch!

That's a tough one without seeing the plants. Maybe too much wind and sun so soon after being transplanted? I would probably try to support the leaves and shield them from sun and wind for a while. Keep the soil moist, but not water logged. Good luck!

Here, in Minnesota, in USDA zone 4, I would say 7 weeks is a good number, if they get plenty of sun and moisture. It does depend on the variety, however. My white ones (Zantedescia albomaculata) begin blooming in about 7 weeks, but my red ones take a week or two longer. Because they bloom for at least a month, you might want to err on planting on the early side. Sounds like you will have a lovely wedding - Congratulations!

Hmm, that's a mystery. They should flower every year. I would fertilize them now with a high phosphorus fertilizer, like you might use in containers for big blooms (of the three numbers, the middle one should be higher). It might help build the rhizomes up. Starting with good bulbs is important too. I'm suspicious of inexpensive bulbs you see at big box stores. Sorry I can't be of more help. All the best, Rosanne

Hi Jason, I plant my Calla rhizomes in late April in Minnesota. The evening temperatures are normally in the 40's (degrees F). The day temps can range from 50 to 75). Therefore, to answer your question, I would imagine they are referring to day-time temperatures. I have begun planting mine this week and I see that we might get down to 34 degrees next week. This is fine, and it would be fine even if it went below freezing, as the bulbs are still protected with two inches of soil above them. Prolonged cold temperatures could be an issue though. I hope this clarifies things. All the best with your Callas!

When they are potted with the lilies visible how do you plant them? What types of fertilizers do they like? Is horse fertilizer safe once its dried out? I saw some half priced at a store close by. However it looks like they have a few tiny wholes in them like a bug or a virus is eating at them?
@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a potted plant, plant the Callas so that the soil of the pot is even with your planting site. I always use a balanced organic fertilizer when planting potted plants (something like 4-4-4). In that sequence, the first number stands for % of Nitrogen, the second for % of Phosphorus, the third for % of Potassium. I can't speak for sure about horse fertilizer, but I imagine it is heavy on nitrogen (the first number in the three digit sequence). Plants like all three nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium), so you might want to check what any fertilizer says about the percentage of these three nutrients. The numbers won't add up to 100%, because of filler ingredients (which lesson the concentration and make application easier) As to the spots, I'm sure they won't damage the health of the plant, but they do impact the beauty. I suspect they are some bug or larvae. Whatever you decide, good luck. 🌹

@@RosannesGarden thank you🎶.. my mother use to grow them, and she had them close to 5 feet tall. She has had several strokes so I am not sure if she remembers the ingredients. Do you need something special for them when they have something that has been eating at the flower?

@@shirleymeador9956 It's nice that they remind you of your mother. 5 ft tall! She must have had great soil! I do not spray or treat mine in any way. Other than Japanese Beetles, which do go after the blooms, I really haven't had a bug issue. I scout out for JB's almost every morning when they are hatched and pick them off by hand. Ugh.

Do calla lily came from seeds also?
@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can grow them from seeds, but it takes a while to get them to flower. They also took about a month to germinate (for me) and they grew slowly. I planted my little plants outside, but they were too delicate and I probably didn't give them enough attention. Had my three little plants made it, I would have dug up their tiny little rhizomes and overwintered them like my other Calla rhizomes. If you live in a warmer zone (Zone 8 or warmer), you might have better luck with seeds. I decided it was an interesting experiment, but not that practical for me. Whatever you decide, good luck!

Hi, I believe what you are experiencing with your Callas is called "reverting." It happens to the best of plants. The plants revert back to their core traits, before they were cultivated into other colors. I am not aware of anything that can be done to reverse it. Sorry. But, white is surely beautiful too. 🌿

@RosannesGarden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! "Zones" refer to a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) measure of climate. Specifically, it is a measure used to describe a plant's tolerance for the cold. I am in USDA Zone 4, which means that on average, our coldest temps in the winter range between -20 and -30 degrees Fahrenheit. That's equivalent to -29 to degrees Celcius to -34 deg. The higher the zone number, the warmer it is. Many gardeners in cold climates select plants based on their zone hardiness. Hence the interest. Here's a link to the USDA map that you might find interesting. planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/

I'm really sorry to hear about your Calla Lilies. It sounds like it's probably a bulb problem. Did the bulbs flower for you ever? Or are they new bulbs? If they did flower before, were they from a potted plant that you bought at a grocery store or big box retailer? I have found that those bulbs are not big on repeating as they were probably force grown for one "show." If you bought your bulbs from a reputable nursery or bulb grower, I am stumped. I'd say give them another year. My young bulbs (small ones broken off from bigger ones) take a year or two to bloom. I'd be glad to help with more information. Your's may have needed more fertilizer, but I'm still thinking it's with the bulb and what happened the previous blooming season.

@@RosannesGarden Thank you so much for your reply. I did buy the plants at Home Depot and they were in full bloom at the time. I actually thought that perhaps they were so force fed that I would not be able to bring them back. And after reading your reply, I’m convinced that that buying them in a store is the issue. I fell in love with Calla Lily’s 2 years ago when my son gave me a couple of plants. Sadly he passed away unexpectedly a year ago. I am determined to find some bulbs and plant them in his honor. Unfortunately, I have not found any here. I may have to order them online. I will keep trying. Thank you again Roseanne.

@RosannesGarden
@RosannesGarden 2 ай бұрын
I’m not sure 🤔. Cow compost & manure and organic compost may be too rich for the bulbs. I would make sure to plant them in at least half garden soil. If you don’t have good soil, most garden centers or stores like Home Depot will have garden soil for sale. Also, using mulch in your hot climate is a fantastic idea - it will definitely keep the soil cooler and moister. Callas are so beautiful; I wish you the best 🌱
