What a simple yet thrilling film with a top cast of Seventies' British acting talent. I missed this sort of thing being very small back then, but I find this the antidote to the rot that can be found on the crap-pump these days, and relish the meandering but clever storylines and the actors acting and not merely standing there looking pretty. I saw this film recently on television. The Jaguar in the car chase was manufactured in 1968 according to the registration number so would have only been five years old in 1973. 'Callan' was worlds away from 'The Equaliser.' The series began in 1967 and was in black and white; even as a young boy I found it compelling. It had a very realistic, seedy kind of mood to it all - the interplay between Edward Woodward, the maloderous 'Lonely'/Russell Hunter and the oily 'Toby Meres'/Anthony Valentine was gripping and slightly sadistic. I realise this in hindsight of course, but I certainly found this tense and quite sordid minor masterpiece fascinating even at that tender age. Every bit as well crafted and believable as a John Le Carré piece.
