An absolute masterpiece of movie making. I remember going to see this here in the UK in 1972/3 with my then girlfriend who shortly became my wife. 52 years later here I am watching and enjoying it again. Sadly, my wife passed away 3 years ago or we would have been watching it together.

There's something so comforting about this movie for me. It takes me back to my early teens, going to bed and watching whatever movie was on late TV at the time. Never quite seeing the whole thing because I'd either catch it 20 mins in or fall asleep before the end. I'll be adding it to my bed time watch list. Thank you!

Dennis Weaver deserved an oscar for his performance. Though he had relatively few lines, he had to convey his emotions purely through his physical acting ability. Weaver and Spielberg created a very special work.

Yep, a great movie. Whilst this was his first movie he'd already directed things for TV including the first episode of Columbo. Apparently there are two versions. One to TV one for cinema. According to one thing I watched the cinema release has a few more scenes to make it longer because there was a minimum limit of 90 minutes for Europe. It's worth looking at a couple of youtube videos about the movie to get a bit more background. Interesting and makes you appreciate some things you might not otherwise be aware of. I seem to watch this movie every couple of years. Still enjoy it every time.

I suppose most of the people who posted positive comments watched this movie when they were kids, and you know, everything you adored as a kid you will adore for the rest of your life. That's how nostalgia works. I've watched this movie for the first time, and it left me with sooooo many questions... It's uncathartic to say the least.
@letsdiscussitoversometea8479Ай бұрын
I think I was in my 20s when I first watched it, and appreciated it from thereon in. The premise itself is so simple, yet so engaging that you want to see if, and how he "gets out of it". The setting was perfect for such a conflict to take place - he was left basically with only himself to rely on against somebody that nobody else seemed to recognise was the problem, AND was for all intents and purposes, anonymous. The villain was very much a figure of h@te, which made it much stronger for the viewer to feel for the victim, who was clearly doing nothing wrong.
@halloransusan1842Ай бұрын
True. Nostalgia
@doritoarmy1026Ай бұрын
I’m sure that whatever questions you had, didn’t need to be answered. The movie concept is intentionally simple so that tension can be built, and in that, it succeeds.
@littlefluffybushbaby7256Ай бұрын
I'm sure there are many that watch because of nostalgia. I don't think that's true of all. Many also watch it because they are interested in cinema and maybe get more out of it. It's 55 years old and was a TV movie made on a limited budget. It's Spielberg's first movie. Made when he was 24. If you are deeply interested in music you listen to music from different eras and areas. If you are deeply interested in movies you will watch movies from different era and areas. Citizen Kane might not appeal to people looking for entertainers but I'm guessing most cinema students have seen it.

Script written by Richard Matheson, based on a short story by Richard Matheson, inspired by something that happened to Richard Matheson. But Spielberg gets the credit for directing it, LOL. For saying 'action' and 'cut'. What a joke! Newsflash, Spielberg watches this 'Spielberg movie' every year because he is a RICHARD MATHESON fan, and this is a RICHARD MATHESON movie.
@videowilliams5 ай бұрын
@@system-error I'm well aware of Matheson's ownership of the story and beyond your list, the fact that he's the one who shopped it around to the studios, got rejected for its format being "too different" and got it published as a short story in Playboy instead where the young Spielberg's secretary saw it and fatefully recommended it to her creative boss. What Spielberg marvels at specifically is the speed with which he filmed it rather than the story's power for which he's never denied the original author credit.
@system-error5 ай бұрын
Those are all things anyone can learn in five minutes of Googling, I'm not impressed by your trivia. Do you seriously think he watches it every year just to marvel at the speed with which he shot it? LMAO give me a break. He watches it because it's an amazing Richard Matheson movie. I bet he doesn't watch 1944 every year! Or even every decade!

I first saw this on TV a couple of days before Christmas in about 1988. I was only about 13 or so at the time but was glued to the TV and I remember watching it with this sort of anxiety and dread as I was totally sucked in by the narrative. The endless chase of a dark beast of a lorry and that sense of no escape. I almost felt relieved at the end. Second time I'm watching it (the first being a couple of decades ago) and, truth be told, it has NOT aged a bit 👏👏👏

This be so great on the bigscreen. Very watchable movie relying on emotion and suspense rather than hollywood CGI.

This film is just one scream of rage, in your face, from beginning to end. I first saw it at 9 y/o and it still terrifies the crap out of me.

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this movie since the 70s, and it still has me on the edge of my seat

I am watching this on my phone in Scotland, September 2024. I also have this wonderful film on DVD. What a masterpiece. Made so many years ago but still brilliant. I have a car with a much more powerful engine than this red job. Thank heavens. The rig is gorgeous. Sorry, but it is. I love hearing all the gear changes. I would love to learn how to drive this bad boy! Antonia. 👍

This movie is proof of Steven Spielberg’s extraordinary talent in directing movies. I saw this movie on a 20” tv, nearly 40 years ago, I was glued to 📺 until the end. At the end I wondered what happened to time, I was so focused on the movie that time ceased to exist. Steven Spielberg is a gift from GOD.

Excellent movie, infact a Masterpiece. Love the beautiful car too, wish I could have diecast model of the car with same color. Steven Spielberg I came to know him with the name of Jurassic Park but believe me he is something outclass. Superb to the exponent many times, excellent movie.

Love this film. Lost count of the amount of times I’ve watched it. But, once Mr Mann had realised he was never going to get to his meeting on time, I don’t know why he didn’t just turn around and go home! 😊

Perhaps the truck would've chased him home. Then you would have a whole extra movie.

Because - after a certain point- Mann accepts the Duel.

Brings back memories of the late 1980s watching this on my portable TV on my bunk bed. Me at the bottom and my brother at the top. I don't know wether today's youngsters have bunk beds anymore.
