‘Callanish 5’ (1985) was composed for Phillip Thorne. The title refers to part of the pre-historic stone circles on the Scottish Isle of Lewis.
The music contains elements of a Celtic psalm and imitates a traditional style of singing that is possibly older than Christianity. The piece elaborates on these elements in an improvisatory manner and seeks to evoke the timeless quality of Callanish.
The music of the eminent Scottish composer John Maxwell Geddes is regularly performed throughout the world.
Played on a Michael Gee guitar. Edited by Iain Coleman.
