A wonderful audio documentary I have on cassette, narrated by John Ardoin, with lots of good quality live and studio excerpts. A fascinating insight into the life of the greatest performer who ever lived.

People dont appreciate her intelligence and talent. She spoke English, French, Italian, Greek. She sight read the second act of Isolde for an audition! She learnt a role in a week ( it usually takes 3 months). She taught master classes at Juliard.She single handedly modernised and revived opera after the war and brought it kicking and screaming into the twentieth century. The unique, unequalled, unrivaled Maria Callas. RIP Ultimate Diva.

John Ardoin is the best ! I was about in elementary school, drawing my Cat, Tiger, in the living room & my parents were watching some sort of documentary of great 20th c. Artists. I heard a voice & looked up & saw this Beautiful woman singing so sad. I’d seen Opera stuff on tv before but disliked their non-acting, standing in one spot like fat cows chewing their cud. Didn’t know her name until High School & started buying dvds, cds books on her. I college I, as an artist spent a year trying to find how she did what moved me as a child. I’ve started to learn an answer, it is painful but…rapturous ✨🌟✨

I think the speaking voice of the supposed very young Callas might be Callas, but the singing surely isn't, unless magic pills were taken subsequently. Which means we just might have the actual recording of what she sang floating around in someone's pocket. That's a remote possibility, but what I am sure of is that there is certainly more filmed Callas than what is currently known.

7:43 apparently it's not Maria in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/rInchWWJltqsnLc (it's around 38:30 in the video) her sister Jackie says that it can't be her because Maria was 10yrs old when she would participate in radio contests.

i read somewhere her say puccini is not good for voice i wonder what she meant
@beachfanatic20105 жыл бұрын
Puccini is a whole bunch of fortissimo stiff singing! The score should always be a score full of dynamics: pianissimos, pianos, mezza voce, etc. with flexibility which keeps the voice fresh.

Madame Butterfly (for example) is gorgeous music but very demanding role for the soprano. It’s basically an oratorio for Soprano. Butterfly never really leaves the stage. That’s very taxing on the voice and body.
