I don't think that's a fair or valuable gripe. The Israeli state is a Zionist project - a right-wing, Jewish, political ideology - and Judaism is the de facto state religion. While the majority of Israeli settlers, and their descendants, are Jewish there are roughly 2.5m non-Jewish people living in the Israeli-occupied territory. Moreover, the majority of dissenting Jewish voices - i.e., anti-Zionism - exist outside of Israel, primarily in the west. The majority of Israeli Jews support the Israeli offensive and do not believe there should be a ceasefire. Describing the aggressors as "Jews" or "Jewish" is entirely correct. I mean the caller didn't recognise them as aggressors, but the point remains.

Legit, if she had truly done some studying, she'd know about how the Ottoman empire's policy of allowing absentee landlords to buy and own land that was previously owned and worked on by Palestinian peasantry, allowed for Zionists to buy off lands that Palestinian peasants were working on for centuries, along with those Palestinians who protest the Zionist buying of land being forced to leave that land through the use of Zionist paramilitary like Bar-Giora and Hashomer (See Fula affair), along with how the father of Zionism Theodor Herzl, alongside other Zionists, were not shy to call their project colonial, with even Benito Mussolini, the fascist Italian dictator, praising the Zionist Ze'ev Jabotinsky, a follower of Herzl's who wrote the text Iron Wall that unapologetically praises Zionism as a justified settler colonial project and explicitly calls the Palestinians the natives - not to mention that during the Fula affair, the land was being bought off by the pioneer of Zionist land buying, Arthur Ruppin, who else happened to be a massive racist against non-Ashkenazi Jews and praised Adolf Hitler And as if stuff couldn't be more blatantly fascistic, ethnonationalistic, and colonialist, the Zionists also advocated and practiced "Conquest of Labour", which was the practice of displacing Palestinian workers from the workforce that was had in 1st Aliyah Jewish settlements, and replacing them with a Jew-only workforce as a means to create a society that is based on the ethnic supremacy of Zionist Jews in the workforce (and hence, Israel came). All of this to say that Zionism has always been a sort of fascistic and colonialist ideology since it's inception.

it goes to show how powerful propaganda is when it comes to justifying violence and twisting peoples’ understanding of reality. this is especially remarkable in folks like the caller, whose confidence has been stoked despite her glaring ignorance (i.e. the nakba, the history of israeli subversion of palestinian statehood, and israel’s violent denial of palestine’s autonomy, power of self-governance). it’s never too late to start learning about the history of the colonial zionist movement that created israel with the help of great britain and the united nations in the early 20th century (before wwii even started). and we have a duty to educate ourselves on what has been happening more recently as the american government is funding this current wave of ethnic cleansing and genocide (financially, politically, logistically, with intelligence, and by delivering an unending stream of made-in-the-usa bombs and arms). i used my library card to check out free eaudiobooks on the libby and hoopla apps because for me, that is more accessible than reading a print book. I’ve learned a lot from rashid khalidi’s /the hundred years’ war on palestine/ and ilan pappe’s /the ethnic cleansing of palestine/. next on my list is a shorter book by ilan pappe and noam chomsky called /on palestine/.

Dr. m'Cheaux, thank you for being clear headed and open on this. As an historian of Modern middle East history who taught in Universities for a decade, I can 100% tell you that you are spot on. I used to hold symposia and upper-level classes discussing this very issue (unsurprisingly, I am no longer an educator). My mentor in UCSB, Sociology Professor Wm Robinson, was smeared in 2009 by the Israeli lobby for the very same things that everyone is drawing attention to right now. 15 years ago, he spoke on this very subject in much the same way and he had to deal with people who "studies (sic) Jewish and Palestinian History 'extensively'." As global citizens, we cannot sit idly by whilst our tax dollars fund 2000lb bombs to be dropped on housing, hospitals, campuses, and schools. And this is not the first time the Israeli military has done this, but I do hope - with champions like you - that it WILL be the last. The mask has slipped and the Netanyahu gov't's authoritarian, xenophobic murderous intent has been revealed like never before.

I appreciate how you approached this caller. You read the situation, determined the best non-confrontational approach, and inquired to establish where her knowledge baseline was. All before going further and illuminating the caller. You listened on a talk show! Plenty of folks consuming MSM / 24hr news cycle and what passes for Palestinian & Jewish history and believe themselves to be informed. Always teaching Teach thank you. 👏🏽 Note: Confrontation is necessary full stop. IIRC research supports humans accept conflicting information best when not wrapped in conflict or shame-inducing feelings of wrong.
@dannypestolesi7123 ай бұрын
There will always be some form of confrontation when addressing people's ideas and beliefs. You are challenging something about them and their identity. But they took an extremely strong approach of confronting, but not agressing. Not making it feel like an attack upon the person. Which iirc, like you said, it is called the blowback effect. You show people something challenging their ideas it risks them diving harder into it. But it happens less when it is dealt with where people do not feel like they are being attacked. They had a very very strong approach. They did not go for the caller directly, they talked to her like a person and gave further context and information to guide her intellectually to a more full understanding of the topic.
@kalka1l3 ай бұрын
@@dannypestolesi712exactly! It was such a smart tactic to try and bypass the potential blowback effect and work through possible cognitive dissonance by encouraging someone, who indicated an interest in Palestinian & Jewish history, to want to learn more about this Nakba Sunn introduced them to. I’m calling myself out here, too often I get enthusiastic sharing the 20th century history of Palestine that I don’t take the time to investigate where someone is at. Now I need to listen to the show to see how it progressed.

The thing is that extremist groups can only gain traction when the environment is right for it. If Palestinians were treated with decency and respect; and if they were given equal opportunity to succeed or fail on their own merit, then Hamas would not have any support. If history has shown us anything, it's that extremism is born from severe need and desperation. If the Israeli government really wants to end Hamas, then it needs to treat its Palestinian population with respect and dignity. It's Israel's stubborn pride that is causing this situation to continue and to escalate.

Palestinian Lives Matter 💯%. However, as descendants of indigenous people, both Palestinians and Israelis are indigenous to the land. The difference is one indigenous population remained on the land and one indigenous population was displaced as refugees. When dealing with refugee populations the issue is one of the right to existence. If refugee populations are denied migration back to their ancestral lands, where exactly do they have the right to go?
@SagaciousNJ3 ай бұрын
It shouldn't be necessary to point out how we can gain benefits personally from doing the right thing, the presence of a conscience is all you need to acknowledge the difference between right vs wrong. But make NO mistake, supporting palestine is a practical matter with practical benefits to black people all over the world, especially black americans. Police departments from all over the world but ESPECIALLY the USA go to train in israel, they learn tactics in Israel from the torture and oppression of palestinians that they then bring back to apply to black and other oppressed people in their home countries. Weapons manufacturers, especially of "crowd control" products get their testing and R&D done in Israel where no one will complain of police brutality. Broken windows police tactics that have already lead to the deaths of Breonna Taylor and so many others, were popularized in Israel as a method of controlling palestinians. Whatever is done to palestine today WILL be done to black people tomorrow.

I think with palestine specifically you can also take a purely empathetic approach as well where you ignore the specifics and try and focus on the humanity of the situation going on at present, but that approach doesn't work sometimes

The latest developments threaten to worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza more than seven months into the Israeli onslaught launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. The head of the U.N. food agency has said northern Gaza is already experiencing “full-blown famine” and experts say nearly all of the territory’s 2.3 million Palestinians are facing severe hunger. The Israeli offensive has caused widespread devastation and made domestic food production nearly impossible, leaving Gaza totally dependent on aid groups for food, medicine and basic goods.

I really appreciate the patience to listen to her and then educate her on the history in context here. Many think the Palestinian Authority is able to just flip a switch and remove Hamas from the region.

The Palestinian Arab citizens are suffering. Caught up in a conflict that many probaby do not want. The sad truth is that the power hungry often seem to be willing to sacrifice the lives of others to keep themselves in power. Claims are being made that Netanyahu financed HAMAS. It's difficult to participate in any discussion that is based on unsupported claims and I see no documentation that confirms Netanyahu's financial support of HAMAS. So either there is supporting documentation that can be verified or there is not. Talk is cheap.

As an incremental step towards instituting a humanitarian solution, I wonder how feasible it would be for UN peacekeeping forces to enter GAZA to reestablish land crossings and escort aid workers. Aid workers say airdrops and plans to deliver aid by sea are no substitute for land deliveries. (AP News/israel-hamas-war-crossings-aid-Gaza) Scriptures Matthew 5:9: Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God'. Into a world that is ugly with violence and hate, Jesus sends us peacemakers.

It amazes me that know one brings up the Blk population of Gaza which was over 10,000 people. Where are they? I haven't seen any Blk folks since the war started. Blk folks are giving all this support, but not asking a very simple question.

I see this type of rhetoric way too often from people of color. Where they say, f*** everybody else and we should work on ourselves. Instead of seeing the bigger picture, seeing the correlations between other struggles and theirs. It honestly is so depressing to me. If we could all just come together, and stop this type of "I only care about my group" behavior... Then those in power would have a lot harder time of opressing all of us. The misandry and misogyny she's also talking about, when she says "what are men doing" is also just bizarre. It is not men's responsibility, it is all of our responsibility as humans to speak up when we see injustice, to fight against the inhumanity we see in the world.

As an incremental step towards instituting a humanitarian solution, I wonder how feasible it would be for the succesors to the Ottoman Empire/ Turkey (and their allies) and the succesors to the British Empire/ Britain (and their allies) to revisit the settlement that placed the Palestinians under Western authorities. I pray that there are uninhabited islands that can be developed in the Mediterranean that would be suitable for refugee settlement.

I don't wanna assume, but I get the feeling; from the answer of "I do a lotta studying...", when the question referred to information *source*, and her definitive confidence in "I get it, God knows I do..."; like "God" was being used as a character reference, and not a colloquial phrase; that her study textbook, on middle eastern political history is the Bible... How strong she was in being wrong; I feel she wasn't even doing the Bible reading, herself; a pastor (with so much oil in his relaxed hair, that the US military considering invading) spouting a sermon at a ratio of 1:99, for sentences of scripture, versus sentences of conjecture was training her in the "facts"

The need to move to another location shouldn't require the loss of countless lives. What exactly is it about Gaza that makes displaced Palestinians returning to that exact same place so important? Compensating for land could be done through land purchases, and there are likely uninhabited islands that could be developed to house displaced populations. Rights to any oil and gas on land are often negotiated separately from rights to inhabit a tract of land. However, I am still waiting on someone to post facts that support the Palestinian narrative that land owned by private citizens was seized without adequate compensation. I hope Americans go this hard over displaced African populations. So far nothing. NOT. A. PEEP.

The The red green and black of the watermelon matches the colors of the Palestinian flag. It is used as a shorthand for being pro Palestine, as well as signifying support in places where it isn't safe to show up Palestinian flag
