Calligraphers and penman have been using the same tricks for over 100 years

In this video I look at an original specimen of penmanship by J. J. Bailey that was published in the Business Educator in June of 1925. I look at both documents and analyze the strategies Bailey used to produce his best penmanship for reproduction.

Your channel is a treasure! So well done. Just started getting into Spencarian script. I'm fortunate to be one of the last generations of kids to learn cursive in elementary school, mid 2000s. No longer required in the US, but now that I have a classroom of my own, I'm going to be implementing American cursive practice for our students :)

Fascinating. I would not have identified the wite-out under certain letters. Goes to show that precise and consistent strokes are hard even for seasoned pros. Thanks for doing this!

Very well analyzed! I have seen the examples of when a penman taped over original work to make the reproduction seamless. How did they reproduce a copy ‘back then’ without a photocopy machine? ( Not familiar with the historic reproduction process) or send link to info and I can look it up:) ThanksDave!!!

I believe it was a chemical process. Plates would be treated with chemicals that would react with the ink on the original. This would create an etching into the plate which they would either use directly to print with or maybe it was used to create a printing block which they would then print with. Not sure how they reduced the size from the original to the final print. Not sure how much of this I have right or wrong, you'll have to research it to get the facts.

There's some film of Zaner writing somewhere, probably stashed in an archive room or basement or landfill. He participated in a study in Chicago under Frank Freeman where his writing was filmed and they did all kinds of analysis of his writing. Even if the film was discovered, it's probably not watchable given its age and how easily film from that era degraded if not kept in the proper conditions. Other than that, I have seen an advertisement in an old Penman Art Journal from the 1920's that claimed a film was going to be released that taught penmanship. Never was able to find any more info about it though.

This writing looks too good to be handwritten, although I'm sure that it is. Original handwritten manuscripts of various various authors and scientists look more like hen scratchings, but nib pens have much improved since then.
