The last month has been a wonderful whirlwind as the channel has been discovered by people all around the world who have apparently been waiting for the chance to come together over what we all care about. It's such a privilege to be at the centre of this movement. This is just the beginning. There is so much more to come this year. I hope you'll stick with me on this journey.

I always thought I simply didn't like opera, and it sort of bugged me, as I am Italian and not liking opera feels a bit like treason lol. Even my dad, who loves "classical" music and knows a fair amount about it, could never stand 19th century opera apart from the very famous arias (tbf he's more of a Baroque kinda guy). But now I think I finally know why! And I'm kinda pissed! Especially because I love other forms of musical theatre and I feel cheated out of liking opera! Thank you for opening my eyes (my ears?), I will be very much looking forward to your next videos.

My maestro teaches bel canto in America and even made his debut in Italy, just had my 12th ever singing lesson and can now do la callunia, vi ravviso, and o isis und osiris. Still young and new to singing but the art is not lost. He teaches me to loosen up, stay on the note, not manufacture vibrato, tone down my trill, not constrict, and go for quality. Has me studying samuel Ramey, Cesare Siepi, Kurt moll, and franz Josef Selig. The art is never lost, just hidden now. Don’t ever stop educating people, glad I found your channel.

I know I've said this before, but I am sooo GLAD you are here with your channel!!! I'm praying this will start a new (actually OLD) trend that will someday bring back to singing what once was!!! And soooo glad that I am NOT alone! It's too late for me now, as a singer as I am 66 years old. But I'm hoping that many younger singers out there, as well as the FEW older "old school" teachers that are still teaching, will start a revolution, and bring back beauty to this great art!! THANK YOU!!

Wow! I'm 19 years old and I would love to learn how to sing in this "old school" way. Modern day singers sounds nice to the untrained ear, but all my love goes to the old recordings I'm able to find on KZbin. I would love to make opera my career in the future, but I would love even more to learn to sing like the original greats! I hope I can bring some justice of the "old ways" into the new world 🌎 🙏

I was very glad to find your channel. I studied Bel Canto with two maestros who came from the same tradition (one being the student of the master). The master had studied in Italy with a famous Italian baritone, probably in the 40s and 50s. What I love about Bel Canto is the ease and naturalness of upper notes, the clarity of the vowel, and the beautiful phrasing that expresses through legato. In this method, I learned from my teachers, we do not manipulate the body, rather we exist in a state of relaxed attention, and allow the free voice to emerge, guiding it with our awareness, imagery and internal animation. To me bel canto voices are the most lovely and natural. Singers of bel canto train for a long time to make it look and feel easy. Your channel is very interesting, and it's great to see others are interested as well.

Hello! As a classical music lover, I speak as an expectator here. I am fascinated by the technique. But listening to it for the first time on your channel I noticed that it can only be fully appreciated live. I can perceive that your voice projection is unbelievable. It shoots out like a laser and every note is absolutely clear as crystal, reverberating everywhere. This is why I think the best way to enjoy it is live. The video recordings simply don’t give it justice.

My interest in this topic is somewhat unique. I am actually trained in classical and contemporary musical theater singing, but was taught by an opera teacher who (while using slightly different pedagogy) advocated similar technique to your channel. In addition, they spoke of a similar transition in musical theater singing within the past few decades. While not necessarily your area of expertise, I think the musical theater community could greatly benefit from your message. I would love for you to make a video on examples of relaxed, supported, healthy sound production in musical theater. Perhaps looking at The Light in the Piazza, An American in Paris, and Westside Story or even pop-rock scores such as Wicked, Les Miserables, Frozen and Newsies!

In the world of violin something has also been lost. The hallowed names covered in The Art of Violin film are still revered by young players, but how many--even at the highest level--grasp what made them special? You cannot find it in books, though one or two have written analyses, or claim, with varying validity, to teach "the old ways". I'd argue that deep research, and the numerous books and theories about technique, and overcomplications, obscures rather than illuminates what gives these magical names their allure. There are things we can say. What Ida Haendel called "refined" vibrato is important. So is perfect intonation, and good breath (i.e. bow) control. Above all, the great musicians of the past heard a lot of great voices. I'd say the greats were searching how to sing on their instrument. Even on piano, Arthur Rubenstein used soprano Emmy Destin (and not some record by a famous pianist!) as the model for the sound he wanted. Quite why the tradition in great measure died out is a complicated question. If modern instrumentalists are trying to "sing" on their instrument at all, maybe they are listening to the wrong singers.

Hello, I have been a life time opera fan, drawn by the bueaty of Bell Canto, but often disappointed with the modern presentations. My brother-in-law, Ingo Titze, has been encouraging me to continue my interest. However, my enthusiasm to find such Bell Canto beauty in today's musical world had significantly dimed, until today when I looked for and found your youtube channel. What a breath of fresh (truly historic) air you are. I find your own singing to be most satisfying to listen to. However your quality and volume exceed my electronic equipment's capacity. I imagine that hearing you in person, live, would be an astonishing lifetime experience. I also enjoy your theatrics, especially your humor. Your explanations, illustrations, visualizations, and vocalizations are first rate, well done! I have subscribed to your youtube channel and will also do so on your patron page, something that I have not done for any one else in the music arena. Thank you for your tenacious endeavors to bring back what has been lost. I am not sure if we really understand what Bel Canto is, as a general or even musical society, having not been exposed to it LIVE. Recordings from 100 years ago do not give the full overtones and partials (evidenced by rather hollow sounds from woodwinds compared to modern recordings). We might get the impression that those singers didn't have the full range of partials, but it is impossible to believe if they were really good singers, they didn't. Anyway, those who heard them live said that recordings didn't do them full justice. When the mass media promotes Three Tenors trying to outdo one another (with their vibratos clearly clashing), plus all the emotional gut wrenching we have come to expect with instrumentalists (pianists like Lang Lang continually pulling faces), classical music becomes a circus (Sarah Brightman, ugh!) but not everyone is impressed. For what it is worth, I had quite a few exchanges about the prodigy Jackie Evancho who started around the age of 6. She sang Pie Jesu in the America's Got Talent competition (2006?) and it was really amazing how those high Ab's (as well as in the old warhorse O Mio Babbino) were just popping out with perfect roundness and penetration from that little frame. What people were saying, they didn't like "opera" before they heard her. The smoothness of her delivery rather than the wide vibratos of conventional classical singers drew them in and I believe they were right. (Unfortunately, her family did not treat her talent properly, in my opinion, just exploited her talent while it lasted.) I dislike most current opera singers but admire some good Lied singers. Indeed, being initiated into Bel Canto as a student (my teacher, Solomon Khromchenko from the Bolshoi - some good clips of him on KZbin, trained by a Bel Cantist who studied in Paris) definitely fine tunes one's listening.

@@bernhardneunteufel9371 Currently, there are some excellent Lied singers indicating that Bel Canto or Beautiful Singing is not lost like Julian Prégardien, Susan Graham and others. The problem is when it is applied to opera: bigger is better. This is contrary to what my two teachers used to say "less is more and more is less". The problem with overdoing and forcing is getting wide vibratos as with the three tenors trying to outdo one another. Some singers are not really suited for opera, or rather the heavy roles, but even light voices can penetrate a hall. The ideal of an operatic tone was different 100 years ago and there I think the problem lies, not trying to imitate the flawed recordings of that era that don't capture all the overtones (quite evident in the sounds of woodwinds compared to today) although they do give some idea what it was like.

That bass causes immense dysphoria for me. Do you have any tips on how to feminize the voice without singing all day? Separately, I was trained as a baritone in college. Do you have any tips on breathing and technique for someone that sings more countertenor/mezzo in their adult life? It seems finding anyone with any idea of the countertenor range is fairly impossible. And I’m preparing audition pieces for Guildhall so anything would be greatly appreciated.

I have o-n-e true counter-tenor student...in my entire teaching career...and it took a LOT for him to accept the uniqueness of his voice. Along that same line...why are you not accepting of your true voice and wanting to make it what it genuinely is not? Counter-tenors are RARE. There's FAR more to being a counter-tenor than singing in falsetto...and in fact, a counter-tenor doesn't use falsetto at all. Just thought I'd offer some food for thought...

with all due respect, I have done my research. I know what a countertenor is and I have attempted to apply some (not all) of what I have learned to my singing voice. I know youtube and research are not sufficient enough to replace training. Finding ANYONE that knows how to train a cuntertenor voice is hard enough without being told "you're not a countertenor." I have been turned away from teachers because they simply do not have the skills. I asked on this channel because the fundamentals of Bel Canto are what I am most familiar with and try to employ when I sing. They allow the voice to feel more fluid which is, ultimately, what I am seeking.

My friend is transgender woman whose natural voice is baritone. Unfortunately, I doubt that a bass or baritone can effectively feminize their voice. I’m very sorry to hear about your dysphoria, but I’m afraid only the higher voice, the tenor can be successful. My friend talks in a soft higher breathy voice in order to sound more feminine and it works but I can imagine that it requires a lot of effort and her vocal cords may hurt sometimes ( I think she mentioned it once).

Hello! I'm a singer with EDS who is learning bel canto... I'm wondering if you'd be open to sharing your experience of singing with this illness? I'm struggling with undiagnosed vocal issues & starting to fear that I'll just lose the ability to sing.

I wonder if there are pop singers that sing bel canto. I’m not musical enough to tell for sure. There’s a Linda Ronstadt documentary and one of her costars in Pirates of Penzance describes her voice as bel canto. Perhaps that’s why she was so successful. I like the concept of bel canto. Many styles of singing have moved too far in the direction of impressing you with how hard they’re working, not just opera. It’s kind of like being beaten over the head.

Your voice is very soothing, and your topics, of my interest. ¨Good bye, sweet day¨ by Helen Clark, please, if you know it or want to learn it.

What do you think about napoletan school-techers like giorgio roncone, giovanni sbriglia and in paris jean de rezche, and their method to develop first the head voice or the falsetto and them combine it with chest voice with exercise la messa di voce ,so it will have the breath flow and britness(il chiaro)of falsetto and the darknes and solidity(schuro) of the chest voice

Any recommendations of bel canto singers? I'm a pianist who loves Caruso, but, I don't know other great ones.

You'll have to define what you mean by "bel canto." It is an extremely general term. Anyway, whatever you do mean, start at least with Mattia Battistini.

there's another person on youtube who has done and is doing something similar. I think it's a man and I think he's from eastern europe. It's very interesting. esp the examples of good and bad singing. But he gets censured all the time, they block his account, he has to do it all over regularly. I hope it doesn't happen too often.

Errr..... everything is beautifully presented by this lady. But don't be fooled, her voice is a very fine countertenor (sometimes sopranist) , that's why she sounds like antique style.

???what I don't think she's a contratenora because if she were her voice would have to be much lower than an deep contralto. deep female voices and contratenores like russell Oberlin sound similar but that doesn't mean she's a contratenora...but anyways her voice her voice is very pretty :)

Yeah...NO!!! I'm a contralto, and she is neither a contralto nor a counter-tenor. How can you equate a counter-tenor to a soprano...since there is no such thing as a sopranist???

I have a very simple question to ask: what authority do you have to claim a movement in behalf of an art which is not from your country? Because... can you imagine similar organizations for Tango, Samba, Yoga etc. created by foreign people outside the respective countries where these arts are from?

If you can't sing Bell Canto, you can't sing. Not even contemporary works.
