Not a stupid question at all! My brother called it a "get down", its sorta used like a halter just in case they need to get off their horse out in the field and lead them. This way they don't have to have a bulky halter under their bridle :)

Great video...but those bits sure don't say much about the riders' ability. A snaffle would look just fine, no need to go all long, silver, and agonizingly painful...

Ok first of all, ANY bit is harsh in the wrong hands. Second of all, these are finished working cow horses- therefore little to no rein pressure is needed when riding them. And what pressure IS used is a slight lift of the hand; that's why a leverage bit is used. So that when the rider lifts up slightly on the reins, the bit is engaged. This is especially important when roping, as a snaffle would require you to pull back- but when you're riding with one hand on the reins and the other hand is busy roping a calf or dallying to the saddle horn, it's difficult (and almost impossible) to shorten your reins enough to pull back. So being able to lift your hand to engage the bit is extremely important in this setting. No, these bits are not "agonizingly painful." I've seen a snaffle do far more damage to a horse's mouth than a curb. And about the riders' ability- these riders could outride you any day. They are professional cowboys- not rodeo cowboys. They ride all day, everyday, for a LIVING. This is what they do. These horses are not simply tools or backyard pets to them- they are their livelihood, and they take what they do very seriously. So please, do yourself a favor and educate yourself on the topic before you go tapping your keyboard on things you know nothing about.
