I remember swapping a 12a on my old RX7. Spent an entire day swapping the engine over on my own. Got it all hooked up and filled it up with new oil, new oil filter, started filling it with coolant and I had left the oil dipstick out and while I was filling up the collant I watched in horror as the combination of oil and coolant was pouring out the dipstick hole. I packed up everything and pushed it in the garage and went and got drunk. I was so disapointed. The next day I took it off again and called up the yard where I got the motor from, they sent another one the next week. No questions asked. That one worked.

Places like that should be put on blast, and remain on blast until they can prove they've changed their ways, and stopped scamming people, or gone out of business. It's one thing to accidentally sell a blown motor, and a total different thing to lie directly to your customers face about testing a motor that quite clearly couldn't have run, even after they'd been sent proof the engine had been blown for awhile. You just know, that if this is how sleazy they are when presented with proof of a lemon, that they're screwing over their customers on a regular basis. I worked at a dismantling facility for a few years and every engine we sold had the compression written on the valve cover for each hole, had heat tabs on the freeze plugs block and head or heads, and a stamp on the block and heads again of our logo to show it was not over heated from that point on and nobody swapped any parts over trying to get stuff for free. Happens A LOT unfortunately. Also tags all over it saying no oil caution... if you get an engine that does not have any of those things I just said done to it reject it because those steps are there to cover both parties and any company worth your time and money should show that they are trying to make sure everything is covered and that they stand behind the product they are selling you. Unfortunately this happens pretty often. 16 years as an automotive tech and I’ve installed defective junk on several occasions. If the shop supplied the part, it’s on us to try to get the wrecker to warranty it out (which is why most shops only work with a very small number of wreckers, and usually not the cheapest ones out there). I just recently bought a replacement OEM wheel for one of my cars on e-bay. Seller listed it as “Grade A, excellent condition.” The price and picture reflected that, so I bought it. The wheel I received looked like it had been dragged through the gravel, including a 1” chunk of the wheel missing around the edge. It clearly was not the wheel in the picture. I sent pictures of the wheel, the receipt which clearly said “Grade A” and the item listing to the seller, asking for a full refund, and they refused saying that “the damage was disclosed in the description.” Obviously it wasn’t. I disputed it with eBay and got a full refund for the wheel, but had to pay return shipping. At that point I was so fed up that I just did it, left a scathing review on their eBay store (double whammy for them since it was a negative review plus eBay had to intervene). Live and learn I guess. Glad you guys got at least some of your money back. From a shop perspective, we’ve gotten very picky about even accepting deliveries of used parts. They get visually scrutinized before they get accepted. Something like a melted sensor would be an instant reject. I know that’s harder for an eBay purchase…

Lesson learned, always compression test a used engine before putting it in the car (if you cant at least turn it over by hand, you would have felt the lack of compression on this one). Sucks how shady wreckers can be, but at least ebay helped out a bit. Hopefully this was a useful lesson at least for some viewers so it may not have been all bad. Looking forward to the turbo 1.3! I mean, the new NA 1.5! 👍

Most starter motors mount to the gearbox, not the engine. So how would you easily compression test it before fitting? Also you probably wouldn't feel it. lots of engines have hydraulic lifters so they wouldn't work correctly until pumped up with oil.
@BuildSomethingAuto3 жыл бұрын
@@samdumbert most often people mount the gearbox and then put it all in as one assembly 😉, and some engines the starter does mount on the engine. However again if it isnt possible to do a “real” compression test then even turning it over by hand (wrench on the end of the crankshaft) you would feel if it has 0 compression. Typically when doing this you want to feel the compression stroke on all 4 cylinders and it should take a relatively similar amount of force to get past it for each cylinder. Crude but better than nothing.
