No kidding... I got a clutch for my mazdaspeed3 which was defective immediately. Cost me 1000 USD... 3 days of my own labor fluids and it even was so bad it destroyed a motor mount. The company refused to give a refund and demanded pictures. I couldn't understand how I could give pictures to something thats completely sealed inside a bellhousing. A month later I got my full refund but the car has sat with a defective clutch in it for 3 years. I refused to pull that clutch and spend that kind of money on a wear and tear item again. So that clutch cost me a car (there are other issues as well with the car not just the clutch) it's just not worth fixing. So I felt that what do I do now feeling so bad

I also can't recall how many years it's been, but it was definitely since Marty was working on his Nissan SuperMarch in his mom's driveway and the old generic Mighty Mods intro was playing. Regardless, these dudes are like family at this point and while I hate to see friends taken advantage of, it's always sad to see good guys taken advantage of. However, I'd still refrain from taking matters into my own hands and deliberately trying to badmouth or destroy a company just because of one bad item. Yes, it always hurts to see my guys being taken advantage of, but they can always take a bad situation and turn it into a good one.

eBay Australia has a money back guarantee on everything, found that out the hard way as a seller. Should have just cut the wrecker out of it completely and gone through eBay. eBay would issue the refund themselves and then take the money from the sellers payouts from other sales.

Yep, both eBay and Paypal are really buyer focused with that kind of stuff. Very helpful and supportive. So much so that it can actually become a problem when you’re an honest seller dealing with shoddy buyers. There’s often no repercussions for buyers who make life hard for the seller. But when it’s the other way around there’s no issues.

I remember swapping a 12a on my old RX7. Spent an entire day swapping the engine over on my own. Got it all hooked up and filled it up with new oil, new oil filter, started filling it with coolant and I had left the oil dipstick out and while I was filling up the collant I watched in horror as the combination of oil and coolant was pouring out the dipstick hole. I packed up everything and pushed it in the garage and went and got drunk. I was so disapointed. The next day I took it off again and called up the yard where I got the motor from, they sent another one the next week. No questions asked. That one worked.

I mean if they want to sell an engine "untested, with warranty" and give you a cheaper price on it then that's fine. Hell, charge an extra $100 to pay for a guy to screw around testing it and offer that to the customer. If they want to sell it "as is" and give you a dirt cheap price that's also fine. It's telling lies to start with, and then not backing the warranty, that's what is shit. Sounds like your guys at least did the right thing and got you an new engine in a reasonable time.

I bought a 2L motor from a wrecker for a Cortina “lol” once. Spent the day putting it in. Went to fire it up and it was only running on three cylinders. So after doing all the usual things and finally found that number three hole had no compression, we took the head off and found the problem. It had No piston and rod 🤣🤦🏻

@@kellyheath8547 The guy seemed to say straight into the cylinder (through the spark plug hole maybe) and let it soak overnight. But that wouldn't get any valves unless you turn it over, which would cause hydro lock if the valves are not stuck. The guy sounded like a professional scammer. Warranty should start on date received as long as the item isn't damaged in shipping. The wrecker is scum. I wouldn't be surprised if they had no idea that the motor was sold to MCM until they saw the episode themselves. And by then it would have been after everything was "settled". So all they got by scamming was terrible reviews from all the MCM detectives out there who figured out who they were. They're guaranteed losing money all so they could hold onto ~$120. They say all publicity is good publicity, but in this case I don't think that's correct.

Places like that should be put on blast, and remain on blast until they can prove they've changed their ways, and stopped scamming people, or gone out of business. It's one thing to accidentally sell a blown motor, and a total different thing to lie directly to your customers face about testing a motor that quite clearly couldn't have run, even after they'd been sent proof the engine had been blown for awhile. You just know, that if this is how sleazy they are when presented with proof of a lemon, that they're screwing over their customers on a regular basis. It makes you wonder if any of their products are what they claim them to be...

I worked at a dismantling facility for a few years and every engine we sold had the compression written on the valve cover for each hole, had heat tabs on the freeze plugs block and head or heads, and a stamp on the block and heads again of our logo to show it was not over heated from that point on and nobody swapped any parts over trying to get stuff for free. Happens A LOT unfortunately. Also tags all over it saying no oil caution... if you get an engine that does not have any of those things I just said done to it reject it because those steps are there to cover both parties and any company worth your time and money should show that they are trying to make sure everything is covered and that they stand behind the product they are selling you. And they keep on avoiding me telling me to go to department of fair trading. :/ shop called stiheaven in sydney.

Unfortunately this happens pretty often. 16 years as an automotive tech and I’ve installed defective junk on several occasions. If the shop supplied the part, it’s on us to try to get the wrecker to warranty it out (which is why most shops only work with a very small number of wreckers, and usually not the cheapest ones out there). I just recently bought a replacement OEM wheel for one of my cars on e-bay. Seller listed it as “Grade A, excellent condition.” The price and picture reflected that, so I bought it. The wheel I received looked like it had been dragged through the gravel, including a 1” chunk of the wheel missing around the edge. It clearly was not the wheel in the picture. I sent pictures of the wheel, the receipt which clearly said “Grade A” and the item listing to the seller, asking for a full refund, and they refused saying that “the damage was disclosed in the description.” Obviously it wasn’t. I disputed it with eBay and got a full refund for the wheel, but had to pay return shipping. At that point I was so fed up that I just did it, left a scathing review on their eBay store (double whammy for them since it was a negative review plus eBay had to intervene). Live and learn I guess. Glad you guys got at least some of your money back. From a shop perspective, we’ve gotten very picky about even accepting deliveries of used parts. They get visually scrutinized before they get accepted. Something like a melted sensor would be an instant reject. I know that’s harder for an eBay purchase…

This episode hit me really hard, especially as I live the same problem my self right now. Bought an expensive engine from a wrecker here in Germany but got bent over with scored and rusted cylinderwalls, pistons that had seen better days, etc etc... I am now trying to get my money back with a lawyer but I see zero hope in that tbh. On the next engine I will check each cylinder with my rotatable borescope that I specifically bought after I bought this rooted engine after I saw all the dirt on the injectors. Also asking for compression tests are a good idea, thanks MCM!

Man that sucks :( I bought an m18a years ago and packed it away safely for about 6 months before I was ready to do the swap, when I pulled it out I found that someone had taken the plugs out but then bolted the coil packs back in over the top, and one of the cylinders had had a bunch of water in it, which couldn't have happened at my place because it was stored very carefully. Didn't even bother contacting the seller, it would have been a waste of time since it was so long between buying the motor and noticing it was stuffed. Best of luck with your engine!

I almost bought a 1.8L 2000 Miata engine from youtube wrecker I Do Cars, but it was just a tad too expensive - and good job too, in hindsight I had a Cali emissions NB Miata and this was federal emissions engine, a swap doomed to countless setbacks and unexpected expenses for that specific model and year as I later found out. I Do Cars would not provide me compression test results though, but I had just watched the teardown video so I knew what I was dealing with.

I'll never understand why companies don't get whistles blown on them. That's how they get way with it and continue doing this to other people. How could that not piss you off enough to do something about it and put a stop to it instead of just letting them continue to do this to other people. To people who possibly can't afford to recover from getting screwed over like this.

Only piece of advice I can give, comp test the engine before even taking it off the pallet, with video. At least if you go to small claims, you can prove you didn't do the damage.

eBay - ask politely first time, open a PayPal dispute when they don't comply - they will almost side with the buyer, failing that get your bank involved too

You are a good understanding man Marty with your comments about having this happen to you after saving and waiting for it. My wife and I bought a landcruiser this year from a seller who advertised the car as something it wasn't. Long story short it had a cracked head and has cost us a fortune all of which the seller is not interesting in talking about. Cars can be heart breaking, the amount of stress and heartache over a car which we are financially upside down on now wasn't worth it. I can't enjoy the car now it's repaired because I am now forever worried about what's next. Hope this wrecker comes good lads. These videos are great.. cheers!

Lesson learned, always compression test a used engine before putting it in the car (if you cant at least turn it over by hand, you would have felt the lack of compression on this one). Sucks how shady wreckers can be, but at least ebay helped out a bit. Hopefully this was a useful lesson at least for some viewers so it may not have been all bad. Looking forward to the turbo 1.3! I mean, the new NA 1.5! 👍

Most starter motors mount to the gearbox, not the engine. So how would you easily compression test it before fitting? Also you probably wouldn't feel it. lots of engines have hydraulic lifters so they wouldn't work correctly until pumped up with oil.
@BuildSomethingAuto
@BuildSomethingAuto 3 жыл бұрын
@@samdumbert most often people mount the gearbox and then put it all in as one assembly 😉, and some engines the starter does mount on the engine. However again if it isnt possible to do a “real” compression test then even turning it over by hand (wrench on the end of the crankshaft) you would feel if it has 0 compression. Typically when doing this you want to feel the compression stroke on all 4 cylinders and it should take a relatively similar amount of force to get past it for each cylinder. Crude but better than nothing.

Sad how much the wreckers gave them the run around trying to get them past 30 days. A comp test and a look inside with a scope would have been wise.
