The fourth Galilean moon has a unique surface that has not changed since the birth of the solar system. And, like Europa and Ganymede, it likely has an ocean beneath its crust. But that may not be enough for life to take root.

Peer into the cosmos on Sky Story and along the way come to appreciate our world all the more. Here, we explore the realm of nature beyond our Earth through the fields of astronomy and astrophotography.
We have three channels. In the UNDERSTORY program, we explore natural history and issues of conservation. The Microstory program portrays the mysterious and beautiful world of the microscopic. The Sky Story program explores the cosmos and delves into astrophotography.
All our programs are committed to the standards of scientifically accurate, high quality content that aims to educate and inspire. New videos are posted almost weekly, so please subscribe. Follow us on Facebook to learn more and join in discussions about the fascinating natural world all around us.

4:36 you claim there that Callisto is the second largest moon in the solar system. That is incorrect as it's the third largest. You actually said earlier in the video that Callisto was the third largest moon in the solar system. Alo that it was the the second largest moon of the Jovian system (of Jupiter). The largest being Ganymede, the second largest being Titan the third Callisto.

extra info: Callisto moves in and out of Jupiter's magnetic field, that field stretches out almost to Saturn's Orbit. While inside the magnetic field, a faint "footprint" has been found in Jupiter's polar Aurora indicating an arc/flux tube from Callisto's poles to Jupiter's. Mystery: what would cause such an arc? Also while Callisto is inside the magnetic field in the shadow of Jupiter, some faint Aurora have been seen on Callisto, but not just polar like Earth, anywhere. This green Aurora must be from Callisto's ionosphere Oxygen interacting with Jupiter's magnetic field. (Oxygen is why Earth's Aurora are sometimes greenish. Red and blue are Nitrogen.) Lastly, the radiation Callisto gets goes up while in Jupiter's magnetic field, and down when in only the far away Sun's solar wind & magnetic field. That is right, Jupiter is the radiation hazard more than the Sun.

Too much radiation. Callisto is safer to start with.

@@ebonaparte3853 That's not at all clear. Gaynemede has a magnetic field which protects it from some of Jupiter's radiation, especially on the side facing away from the planet. Callisto is smaller than Gaynemede and has no protective magnetic field.

@@davidhess6593 But Jupiter’s magnetosphere is so big, Ganymede’s magnetosphere is no match for it. Quite a bit of radiation still gets through to the surface. Callisto is outside of the main radiation belts. With current radiation shielding, you could live on the surface for 28 years, and shielding will have improved by the time we get out there. Ganymede could be a good colony, but my money’s on Callisto.

Interesting video , always good to learn more about space and what’s in it.. It will be good if we ever do get serious about becoming space travellers with decent sized space ships that can actually harness some of the raw materials on these body’s and make use of them. But at the rate we moving , i suspect we will suffer the fate of the dinosaurs before we actually get off our asses and actually do something.

Callisto's mysteries may be revealed at some point in our future when our technologies progress enough to allow it, I would not be so definite on it or other solar system objects retaining their secrets. We are nothing if not inventive and knowledge hungry ; )

Here’s the thing people rarely talk about- Jupiter emit ridiculously high levels of radiation. We will need crazy strong shielding to do anything in its system

Jupiter is a massive radiation source, it's true, but as noted, Callisto is mainly beyond its radiation belts.
